Spray Containment and Overspray Control

Purpose

Everything a sprayer atomizes that does not land on the substrate lands somewhere else, and on a residential exterior that is usually a neighbor's car, a condenser coil, a slate walkway or window glass. An overspray claim on a single vehicle can exceed the entire labor content of the job that caused it, and it arrives as a phone call weeks later with no photographs on your side. This SOP produces a defensible perimeter before the pump starts, a stop rule while it runs, and a written record of what was near the work and in what condition.

Scope

Airless spray of architectural coatings on residential and light commercial exteriors and occupied interiors, from the pre-spray survey through containment removal and the post-spray walk.

Not covered: sprayer setup and shutdown, which is the airless sprayer SOP's; lead-safe containment on pre-1978 housing, which is the RRP workflow's and carries its own legal requirements; and abatement-grade enclosures, which are not residential repaint work.

Procedure

1. Survey the drift zone and photograph everything in it before any masking goes up. Walk a full circle and inventory what is downwind and within reach of the fan: vehicles, glazing, condensers, gas meters, pools, furniture, plantings, and the neighboring property line, photographing each with the timestamp on, including damage and speckle a previous contractor left. Acceptance: a written inventory listing every item, each with a dated photograph, and the measured distance to the nearest item you cannot move or cover. Wrong, and the stop rule: an inventory that stops at the property line fails you, because drift does not. An item that cannot be moved, covered or shielded is not sprayed near, it is brushed and rolled. Hazard: none, a walk with a camera before any equipment runs.

2. Notify the customer and the affected neighbors in writing before the pump starts. Send a short note naming the spray days, the hours, and the ask: move vehicles off the driveway and the adjacent kerb, close windows on the facing elevation, keep pets in. Acceptance: written notice sent and acknowledged for the customer and every property inside the step 1 zone, on file before the first pass. Wrong, and the stop rule: a verbal heads-up to whoever answered the door is not a record, and a neighbor who cannot be reached with a vehicle in the zone means that elevation gets shielded or brushed rather than sprayed on faith. Hazard: none, correspondence sent from the office.

3. Measure the wind at the work elevation and apply the gate before setup, then again each hour. Read a handheld anemometer at the height you will be spraying, not at ground level in the lee of the house, and log the reading with the time. A common shop default is free spray below 5 mph sustained, spray with shielding and a downwind tell-tale between 5 and 10 mph, and no spray above 10 mph; tune it to your product, but publish one set and hold it. Acceptance: a logged reading at the start and each hour, all under the shop's stated ceiling. Wrong, and the stop rule: gusts lifting the masking are already past the ceiling whatever the average says, and above the ceiling spraying stops on that elevation and the crew back-rolls or moves to a sheltered face. Hazard: wind loads sheeting like a sail and a ladder cannot take that side load, so nobody holds or fastens a sheet from a ladder; it is fastened at ground level and raised on poles, and every ladder on this work is set and used to 29 CFR 1926.1053, the construction ladder standard a residential repaint falls under.

4. Shut down and cover the mechanical equipment, and tag what you shut off. Turn the air conditioning off at the thermostat, watch the outdoor fan spin down and stop, cover the condenser with a breathable cover, and hang a tag on the thermostat naming who turned it off and when. Acceptance: outdoor fan confirmed stopped by eye before the cover goes on, cover breathable rather than plastic film, tag hung. Wrong, and the stop rule: a unit that will not stop from the thermostat does not get covered at all, because a running condenser under a cover overheats; leave it uncovered, shield it with a standing panel, and tell the customer. Hazard: the outdoor disconnect is electrical work for a qualified person under 29 CFR 1910.332 and 1910.399, with practices at 1910.333(b)(2), so a painter does not pull it.

5. Build the containment, then set the gun to make less drift rather than to catch more of it. Mask hard edges, run ground cover past the drip line, stand shield panels between the fan and anything in the step 1 inventory, and only then set the gun: the largest tip that still gives the specified film, the lowest pressure that clears tails, a 12 inch standoff held square, and back-rolling behind the fan. Acceptance: every step 1 item moved, covered or behind a shield, and the gun at the tip and pressure recorded on the sprayer ticket. Wrong, and the stop rule: answering drift by adding plastic and raising pressure makes it worse in both directions, and a pattern that will not hold at working pressure means a worn tip under the sprayer SOP's retirement gate. Hazard: indoors, containment traps solvent vapour and never substitutes for ventilation, so run mechanical ventilation with a respirator under a written program per 29 CFR 1910.134, and if that program has lapsed the crew brushes and rolls; floor sheeting is a slip surface and gets taped flat at every seam.

6. Run a downwind tell-tale before the first full elevation and read it before you commit. Set four clean white cards on stakes downwind at 20, 40, 60 and 80 feet from the work face, spray a single test elevation, wait fifteen minutes, then read each card in raking light. Acceptance: no visible speckle on the card at or beyond the distance to the nearest step 1 item that could not be moved or covered. Wrong, and the stop rule: speckle at that card means the plume already reaches the asset, so spraying on that elevation stops; the fixes in order are move the asset, add a shield panel, drop to brush and roll, and both readings get logged. Hazard: the cards sit in the plume, so whoever places and reads them wears the same respiratory protection as the person on the gun.

7. Remove containment in reverse order and restore everything you shut off. Pull masking per the coating's own timing, take up ground cover from the outside in so trapped overspray dust folds inward, then uncover the condenser, remove the tag, restore the system and stand there while it starts. Acceptance: condenser uncovered and clear, system restarted from the thermostat with the outdoor fan confirmed turning and supply air confirmed cold at a register, tag removed, no sheeting left under a shrub or in a roof valley. Wrong, and the stop rule: a system that will not start after a day off is not something to leave for the customer to find at bedtime, so tell them before you load out and refer them to their HVAC contractor the same day. Hazard: this puts electrical load and rotating equipment back in service, so hands and cover material are clear of the fan grille before the thermostat is touched.

8. Walk the perimeter with the customer and handle any overspray as a claim, not as a touch-up. Repeat the step 1 circle with the inventory in hand, checking glass, vehicles, walkways and the neighbor's side in raking light. Acceptance: every inventory line initialled clean by the lead, and the customer walking the same circle before load-out. Wrong, and the stop rule: overspray found on a vehicle, glass or a finished surface is never removed with solvent, a razor or a compound, because solvent can soften a clear coat and turn a light speckle into a refinish; photograph it, report it to the office the same day, and let the office route it to a detailer or the insurer. Hazard: none physical here; the risk is a small claim turned into a refinish by a rag and a can of thinner.

The record this produces

The overspray file holds the step 1 inventory with its photographs, the notifications and acknowledgements, the hourly wind log with times and readings, the tell-tale readings with distances, the thermostat tag times off and on, and the signed perimeter walk. It lives with the job, not in a truck.

The office reads it twice: when a claim arrives, where dated pre-existing-damage photographs and a signed walk usually end the conversation in an afternoon, and at estimating time, where a wind log showing repeated stops on one elevation says that elevation should be bid as brush and roll.

One filled-in run: two-story exterior body coat, suburban lot

Step 1 inventory: eight items, six of which can be moved or covered. The two that cannot are the neighbor's parked sedan at 60 feet from the west face and a fixed pergola at 35 feet; photographs taken, existing rock chips on the sedan's hood documented. Step 2 notice sent to the customer and the one neighbor inside the zone, both acknowledged by text. Step 3: anemometer at the second-floor eave reads 4 mph at 07:50, under the 5 mph free-spray threshold. Step 4: thermostat off at 07:55, fan confirmed stopped, breathable cover on, tag hung. Step 5: shield panel set between the west face and the pergola.

Step 6 fails. Cards set at 20, 40, 60 and 80 feet. After the test elevation and fifteen minutes, the 20 and 40 foot cards are speckled, the 60 foot card carries a light but visible speckle, and the 80 foot card is clean. The acceptance is no visible speckle at or beyond the nearest uncovered asset, and that asset is the sedan at 60 feet, so the 60 foot reading fails the gate as written. Spraying on the west face stops. Fix taken in order: the neighbor moves the sedan to the far kerb, measured at 140 feet, and a second shield panel goes up. Re-read after the next test elevation: 60 foot card clean, 40 foot card still speckled. Since the nearest remaining uncovered asset is now at 140 feet and both the 60 and 80 foot cards read clean, the gate is satisfied and work resumes.

Self-check against the criteria as written: step 3 acceptance is every logged reading under the ceiling, 4 mph against a 5 mph free-spray threshold, PASS. Step 6 acceptance is no visible speckle at or beyond the nearest uncovered asset; first read, speckle at 60 feet against an asset at 60 feet, FAIL, stop rule taken; second read, clean at 60 and 80 feet against an asset at 140 feet, PASS. Step 7 restored the thermostat at 16:20 with the outdoor fan turning and cold air confirmed at a register, closing what step 4 opened.

Two exceptions this run did not hit. Had the neighbor refused to move the vehicle, the west face would have been brushed and rolled rather than sprayed behind a shield, with the refusal logged in writing. Had the thermostat tag still been hanging at load-out, the crew does not leave until the system is running, because a customer who finds a dead air conditioner at bedtime remembers it longer than the paint.
