Why this matters
Airless sprayers (Graco, Titan, Wagner) are the single most-expensive paint tool a crew owns. A homeowner-grade unit costs a fraction of a professional rig, and the professional rig costs several times more. Mistreated, sprayer life is 2 to 3 years. Maintained, it is 8 to 12. The difference is daily maintenance procedure. This is the working framework.
Why maintenance matters
Sprayer failures from poor maintenance:
- Clogged tip: paint stops mid-job; ruined coverage
- Worn packing: leak; lost pressure
- Pump damage: repair
- Hose burst: paint everywhere; hose replacement
Most common failure: paint left in pump overnight → dried; pump damage permanent.
Daily maintenance procedure
After EVERY job, before storage:
Step 1: Initial cleaning at the work site
- Empty paint hopper
- Recover unused paint to original can (some methods: pump into pail; other: dump)
- Wipe down hose connections + housing
Step 2: Flush with appropriate solvent
For latex/water-based paint:
- Place suction tube in clean water
- Trigger spray until clear water comes through
- 1-2 gallons of water through machine
- Some pumps need "fluid section flush" - pump in reverse direction
For oil-based paint:
- Use mineral spirits or recommended solvent
- Same flushing procedure
- Dispose of solvent waste per regulations
Step 3: Pump-side flushing
Most sprayers have:
- Prime/spray valve with two positions
- Pumping system can be reversed
Run flush mode (specific to your sprayer):
- Switch to prime
- Run clean water OR solvent through
- Look for clear discharge
Step 4: Tip + filter cleaning
- Remove spray tip
- Soak in solvent (water for latex; mineral spirits for oil)
- Brush tip orifice with soft brush (NEVER metal)
- Hold tip up to light; orifice should be clear
- Inspect filter (in handle or pump); clean similarly
Step 5: Storage prep
For overnight storage:
- Pump out all liquid
- Apply small amount of Pump Armor (water-based) OR Tool Oil (oil-based) for pump preservation
- Wipe down + dry housing
- Store upright, covered
For long-term storage (weeks):
- Same as above PLUS
- Fill pump with Pump Armor
- Cover hose connections
- Indoor temperature-controlled storage
Daily inspection
Each morning before first use:
- Hose: visible damage, kinks, cuts
- Pump: leak around packing
- Fittings: tight
- Switches + safety: operational
- Spray tip: not cracked or worn
Defective component = take out of service until repaired.
Weekly + monthly maintenance
Weekly:
- Deep clean pump (manufacturer-specific)
- Inspect packing (replace if leaking)
- Lubricate moving parts per manual
- Test pressure relief
Monthly:
- Replace packing (if signs of wear)
- Replace inlet/outlet valves (worn)
- Filter cleaning + replacement
- Hose pressure-test (manufacturer spec)
Annually:
- Rebuild pump (parts plus about half a day of labor)
- Replace hoses (5-7 year typical life)
- Replace cracked or worn components
Spray tip selection
Tip size determines:
- Spray fan width
- Output per minute
- Atomization quality
- Paint type compatibility
Tip nomenclature (e.g., 517):
- First digit (5) = fan width: 10"
- Second + third digits (17) = orifice size: 0.017"
Tip sizing for common paint:
- Latex wall paint: 515-519 typical
- Trim paint + cabinet paint: 211-313 typical
- Stains: 415-517
- Heavy texture: 519-721
Wrong tip:
- Too small for paint: clogs, surge
- Too large: over-application, runs
For most crews: 2-4 tips per truck.
Spray pressure setting
Most paint sprayers operate 2,000-3,300 PSI:
- Higher pressure: more atomization; heavier paints and larger tips need it
- Lower pressure: less atomization; run the lowest pressure that still gives a full fan with no tails
- Test on cardboard/sample piece first
If overspraying: reduce pressure.
If gushing in stream (not fanning): increase pressure.
Some inverter-driven pumps auto-adjust.
Common pitfalls
Daily:
- Leaving paint in pump overnight: pump damage permanent
- Skipping the flush: dried paint inside; failure within weeks
- Wrong tip for paint: clogging or overspray
- Storing dirty: smells + corrosion
Weekly:
- Ignoring packing wear: leak develops mid-job
- Forgetting filter check: clogged + reduced output
- No lubrication: increased wear
Monthly:
- Skipping bottom-end inspection: pump fails at field
- No spare parts on hand: down time when problem hits
Pump repair indicators
Pump won't prime:
- Inlet valve stuck OR
- Air leak in suction OR
- Worn packing
Pump runs but no output:
- Outlet valve stuck OR
- Worn check balls
Pump pulses + slow:
- Worn packing OR
- Air in pump
- Re-prime needed
Leak around pump housing:
- Packing failure
- Pump rebuild needed
Pump rebuild kits are cheap; the labor at a service center is the larger half. Doing the kit in-house pays for itself the first time.
Cost analysis
A pro crew using a sprayer 200 days a year:
- Depreciation is the biggest line. Spread the rig over its service life and you get a per-day number that is small next to one crew hour
- Tips are the next line and they are consumable. A tip in daily production wears out in roughly two weeks, and a worn tip costs you paint and finish quality long before it stops spraying
- Routine maintenance (Pump Armor, filters, packing kits) is the smallest line of the three by a wide margin
- Add them up and the whole operating cost per day is still less than an hour of labor. That is the point: this is not where the money is, so do not economize here
Properly maintained: 8 to 12 years of service.
Mistreated: 2 to 3 years, then a rebuild or a replacement that costs many times the maintenance you skipped.
The maintenance line is the cheapest of the three, and it is the one that decides which of those two numbers you get.
Service center vs in-house
For minor maintenance: in-house.
For major rebuilds: service center.
Manufacturer service centers: Graco, Titan and Wagner all have authorized centers. They charge more than the local paint store but they carry the parts, so the turnaround is days rather than weeks. On a rig your crew is waiting on, turnaround is the number that matters.
Some pro paint stores: smaller rebuild scope.
Spray equipment for different scales
Residential paint contractor:
- Graco Magnum X5/X7 prosumer
- 1-2 sprayers per crew
Pro residential painter:
- Graco Mark IV/V
- Titan ImpactX series
- 2-3 sprayers + spare
Commercial painter:
- Graco GMax II
- High-volume output
- 3+ sprayers; rebuild cycle planned
For most residential pro: Graco Mark IV/V level.
Crew training
Field crew should know:
- Daily maintenance procedure (15-30 min training)
- Common problem identification
- When to call service center vs work around
- Safety procedures
Document in crew SOP. Cross-train all crew members.
Customer talking points
When customer asks about your spray equipment:
- "We use [Graco / Titan] professional equipment"
- "Daily maintenance ensures consistent quality"
- "Sprayer + crew investment differentiates us from one-time-use rental crews"
Safety considerations
Airless sprayers operate at high pressure:
- Injection injury risk (paint into skin = ER + sometimes amputation)
- Never spray toward body
- Tip guards must be in place
- Pressure relief BEFORE any work
- Eye + face protection
Spray-equipment safety training:

- Manufacturer safety training
The single most-effective spray equipment cost-saver: end-of-day Pump Armor. A quart of Graco Pump Armor lasts 100+ overnights. Without it, pump packings dry out after 2-3 weeks of inactivity + need replacement. With it, pumps go through 6+ years of weekend storage with no degradation. Thirty seconds and a splash of Pump Armor at the end of the day is the cheapest thing on the truck, and it is what stands between you and a packing kit every season.
