Ant Colony Treatment Standard

Purpose

Ant work divides into two outcomes and the split happens at identification, not at product selection. Get the species right and a colony treatment closes in one or two visits. Get it wrong on a budding species and a repellent contact spray splits one colony into several, each one now in a wall void the tech cannot reach, and the account becomes a monthly visit that never ends.

This standard makes identification a gate rather than a preference, fixes which method families are permitted for which biology, and bans the one action that causes the most expensive failure in the trade: spraying a repellent residual across an active trail before anyone knows what is on it. It also produces a trail-count record, so the next visit can tell a colony that is dying from one that has simply moved its foraging route.

Scope

Covers structural and perimeter ant work at residential and light commercial accounts, including odorous house ant, pavement ant, pharaoh and other budding indoor species, carpenter ant and common exterior foragers.

Does not cover imported fire ant, whose mound treatment, sting-response and quarantine rules are a separate body of work; termite, which is a wood-destroying organism with its own inspection form and treatment standard; the initial account commissioning, owned by the initial inspection and treatment plan SOP; or the retreat decision, owned by the follow-up and retreat protocol.

Procedure

Step 1 - Identify to species, or place nothing. Collect foragers from the trail into a vial, not a photograph, and identify to species or to a group whose behavior you can defend. Acceptance: a species or group name written on the ticket with the collection point, or a written deferral naming where the specimen went and when the answer is due. Wrong looks like "sugar ants" on a ticket, a phrase with no biology attached that has authorized more budding events than any product ever has. Stop rule: identification unresolved, place monitors and bait only, apply no residual of any kind, and set a return date. Hazard clause: collect with a vial and lid rather than fingers, since a misidentified forager can be a stinging species, and do not disturb a suspected ground nest to get a specimen.

Step 2 - Map the trail and count it before you change anything. Follow the trail in both directions to the entry point and, where possible, the nest, and count foragers crossing a fixed point over a fixed interval, for example a 60-second count at a marked spot on the trail. Acceptance: at least one marked count point per trail with the count and the time of day recorded, plus the entry point noted on the sketch. Wrong looks like a count taken at a different spot each visit, which produces numbers that cannot be compared. Stop rule: no trail visible on arrival, do not treat blind; place a non-toxic attractant or monitors and return, since a treatment aimed at yesterday's trail lands nowhere. Hazard clause: trace trails on a ladder only where the customer cannot do it themselves and the ladder is footed on level ground, and never step onto a roof edge to follow a trail, because a fall from height outweighs anything this visit can find.

Step 3 - Choose the method family the biology allows, and write down why. Budding indoor species such as pharaoh get bait only, since a repellent contact application fragments the colony into satellites. Odorous house ant and similar species take non-repellent perimeter applications with a transfer effect plus bait. Carpenter ant work centers on locating the nest and the moisture that supports it. Acceptance: the chosen family recorded on the ticket beside the identification, with one sentence of reasoning. Wrong looks like the same perimeter band applied to every ant call regardless of species. Stop rule: any request to apply a repellent indoors on a budding or unidentified species, refuse it and escalate; that is the decision this standard exists to make. Hazard clause: run label verification for each product, because non-repellent and repellent products with similar labels sit next to each other on the same shelf.

Step 4 - Match the bait to what they are taking now. Offer both a sugar-based and a protein or grease-based bait at the trail and observe which is worked, since colony preference shifts seasonally and by brood stage. Acceptance: both matrices offered at each trail point, and the one recruited to within about 20 minutes recorded as the accepted matrix. Wrong looks like one matrix placed and declared refused, when the colony was simply on the other preference that week. Stop rule: neither matrix recruited after both were offered, do not escalate to a spray; check for a competing food source, clean the placement surface and re-offer. Hazard clause: place bait in cracks, voids or tamper-resistant stations out of reach of children and pets, never as an open smear on a floor or counter.

Step 5 - Apply the non-repellent perimeter where the species allows it. Before the tank is opened, read the label's Hazards to Humans and PPE sections and wear exactly what they list: a wettable powder or duster load is an inhalation route gloves do not address, and the label's PPE is a condition of use. Then treat the labeled band at grade, at entry points, and at utility penetrations with a labeled non-repellent so foragers pass through it and carry it back, at the label rate, because using a registered pesticide inconsistently with its labeling is a federal violation under FIFRA at 7 U.S.C. 136j(a)(2)(G), not a shop standard. Acceptance: continuous coverage of the labeled band at the label rate, entry points and penetrations included, no gaps at the corners where the tech turned. Wrong looks like a heavy band on the front elevation and a thin one behind the condenser, which is where the trail usually enters. Stop rule: rain falling or forecast inside the label's rainfast window, or an irrigation cycle due, reschedule the exterior rather than washing it off. Hazard clause: keep the application out of gutters, downspout discharges and any drain path, respect the label's pollinator language by not treating blooming vegetation, and never spray toward or into an electrical service entrance or meter base.

Step 6 - Trace carpenter ant work to the moisture, not just to the ant. Where the species is carpenter ant, find the nest and the water that supports it: roof leak, gutter overflow, window flashing, deck ledger, plumbing leak. Acceptance: the nest or a probable void identified and marked, with the moisture source named and its owner assigned, and any labeled void treatment applied to that void. Wrong looks like a perimeter treatment on an active parent nest in a wet sill, which suppresses foragers for weeks and never touches the colony. Stop rule: suspected structural damage or a nest inside a wall you would have to open, stop; the shop does not open structure, so refer the customer to a contractor and treat only what is accessible. Hazard clause: probe suspect wood with a hand probe rather than a power tool, since drilling into an unknown wall cavity reaches wiring and plumbing, and any drilled void treatment is preceded by confirming what is behind the surface.

Step 7 - Assign the conducive conditions with owners and dates. List vegetation touching siding, mulch above the weep line, firewood against the structure, downspouts discharging at the foundation, gaps at door sweeps and utility penetrations, and interior food and moisture sources. Acceptance: each item written with an owner, a target date, and one line on what it changes. Wrong looks like a list handed over with no owner, which is how a shop ends up treating the same conducive condition four times a year. Stop rule: the customer declines an item the plan depends on, the service manager sets the revised expectation in writing before the next visit is booked. Hazard clause: never assign a customer an item that puts them on a ladder or into a crawlspace; those go to a trade.

Step 8 - Re-visit on interval and read the counts against the gate. Return within 7 to 14 days for an indoor infestation and read the same marked count points at a similar time of day. Acceptance: forager count at each marked point down at least 75 percent from the baseline count, AND no new trail at a location that was clear at the last visit. Wrong looks like reading a lower count at a different hour and calling it progress, since foraging varies through the day. Stop rule: counts down but new trails appearing, treat it as a budding or satellite event, stop any repellent work immediately, and re-run identification with the service manager; counts flat with bait untouched, rotate the bait matrix and re-site placements. Hazard clause: re-verify the label before any rotation product is opened, and confirm the customer has not applied a consumer aerosol over your placements, which contaminates them and requires replacement at new sites.

The record this produces

Per visit: species or deferral with collection point, sketch showing trails, entry points and marked count points, the count per point with time of day, method family chosen with its one-line reasoning, bait matrices offered and which recruited, exterior band coverage and product details, conducive items with owner and status, and any structural referral made.

The count-point history is what makes the second visit a measurement. The service manager reads counts falling while new trails appear as a budding signal, the single pattern that must trigger a stop rather than another application, and reads a gating conducive item open for two visits as a warranty conversation waiting to happen. If the customer later disputes the outcome, the identification line plus the method reasoning is what shows the treatment matched the biology.

Worked pass: kitchen trail and a second entry point

Baseline at visit one: a trail from a slab expansion joint at the rear elevation to a kitchen sink cabinet. Two marked count points, one at the exterior entry and one at the cabinet edge, both read as 60-second counts in the late morning: 42 at the entry, 18 at the cabinet. Identification comes back as a non-budding structural invader, so both bait and a non-repellent perimeter are permitted.

Step 4 offers both matrices at each point. The sugar matrix recruits within about 20 minutes at both; the protein matrix is not worked and is recorded as such. Step 5 applies the labeled non-repellent band including the expansion joint and the two utility penetrations. Step 7 lists three conducive items: mulch above the weep line, a downspout discharging at the corner nearest the trail, and a shrub touching the siding, all customer-owned with a one-week target.

Visit two at day 10. Entry point reads 9, down from 42, which is 79 percent and clears the reduction condition. Cabinet reads 2, down from 18, which is 89 percent. But a new trail appears at a bath penetration that was clear at visit one, so the second condition fails and the gate fails.

The tech takes the stop rule: no additional residual, no repellent, specimen collected from the new trail, and the service manager re-checks identification. It comes back as the same species, and the new trail traces to the downspout, which was still discharging at the foundation because the customer had not done the conducive item. That distinction matters, because a new trail from an unresolved conducive condition is a different problem from a new trail caused by colony fragmentation, and only one of them means the method was wrong.

Visit three at day 21, after the downspout was extended: entry 2, cabinet 0, bath trail gone, no new trails. Both conditions clear and the account moves to its regular interval with the count points left marked for the next tech.
