Carpenter Ant and Moisture Correction
Purpose
Carpenter ants do not eat wood, they excavate it, and they excavate the wood the building has already been wetting for years. That is why this account behaves differently from every other ant call: the treatment suppresses foragers for a few weeks and the water rebuilds the nest site for a decade. A shop that treats without correcting the water is selling a subscription it did not mean to sell.
This standard makes two things gates rather than notes. First, a numbered wood moisture reading at marked points, so the correction can be proved rather than assumed. Second, a parent-versus-satellite determination, because killing a satellite in a wet header while the parent colony sits in a stump forty feet away produces a clean visit and a return in the spring.
Scope
Covers carpenter ant work at residential and light commercial accounts: frass and damage assessment, night foraging inspection, wood moisture survey, parent and satellite nest location, labeled perimeter and void treatment, and the moisture corrections the account closes on.
Does not cover species identification, bait matrix selection or budding species, all owned by the ant colony treatment standard; termite and other wood-destroying organisms, which carry their own inspection form; structural repair, which the shop refers out; or product selection, which runs through the label verification SOP.

Procedure
Step 1 - Confirm carpenter ant from the debris, not from the ant. Look for frass: coarse, fibrous shavings mixed with insect parts and leg segments, usually below a slit-like gallery opening, in a window head, sill, deck ledger, porch column base or subfloor. Acceptance: frass located and its exact position recorded, or a written statement that no frass was found and where you looked. Wrong looks like calling smooth mud-packed galleries carpenter ant work; that is a termite pattern and it routes to a different inspection entirely. Stop rule: mud tubes or soil-packed galleries, stop this procedure and open the termite inspection. Hazard: collect frass with a tool and a bag rather than blowing it clear, since old frass carries fine dust and, in a chronically wet cavity, mold spores you do not want to inhale.
Step 2 - Inspect at night and count the trail at marked points. Carpenter ants forage mostly after dusk, so a daylight inspection finds a fraction of the traffic. Return after dark, follow the trail in both directions with a light, and take a 60-second count at a marked, repeatable point on each active trail. Acceptance: at least one marked count point per trail, with the count, the time and the direction of travel recorded. Wrong looks like a count taken at a different spot or a different hour each visit, which produces numbers that cannot be compared. Stop rule: no trail found after a full night pass, do not treat blind - place monitors and return, because a treatment aimed at a guessed route lands nowhere. Hazard: night exterior work means uneven ground, unlit steps and deck edges, so wear a headlamp, keep both hands free, and do not walk a roof or a deck edge in the dark for any reason.
Step 3 - Survey wood moisture with a meter at marked points. Use a pin meter set for the species where the meter offers it, and read at marked, dated points: the suspect member, one member adjacent to it, a dry interior reference, and any band joist, sill or subfloor along the same water path. Acceptance: a numbered reading at every marked point, evaluated at the worst point rather than the average, against a working gate of below 15 percent moisture content for framing the shop will call corrected. Sound interior framing commonly reads in the high single digits to low teens, and decay fungi need sustained readings above roughly 20 percent, which is why a header at 24 percent is both an ant site and a rot site. Wrong looks like "wet framing" on a ticket. Stop rule: worst point at or above the gate, the moisture correction is now a condition of closing the account and is recorded as open. Hazard: probing and metering wet framing releases spores from decayed wood, so mist rather than scrape, and where visible growth or heavy decay dust is present wear respiratory protection under a written program per 29 CFR 1910.134.
Step 4 - Decide parent or satellite, and say which on the ticket. A satellite holds workers and older brood and tolerates a damp indoor void; the parent colony holds the queen and the young brood and is very often outdoors in a stump, a dead limb, landscape timbers or a fence post within roughly the property. Follow the night trail outward, tap and listen for the rustle a disturbed gallery makes, and check the obvious exterior candidates. Acceptance: a written call of parent, satellite, or unresolved, with the location or the search area named. Wrong looks like treating the indoor void and closing the ticket, which is the single most common reason this account returns in spring. Stop rule: unresolved after a full exterior search, escalate to the service manager and keep the account open on interval rather than declaring success. Hazard: tapping and listening at a ceiling or eave is ladder work, so foot the ladder level, keep three points of contact, and stay clear of the service drop.
Step 5 - Assign the water corrections and name the referral boundary. List each source with an owner: gutter overflow at the affected elevation, missing or failed head flashing, a downspout discharging at the foundation, a deck ledger with no flashing, a leaking supply or trap above the member, condensation on an uninsulated line, and grade or splash-back at a sill. Acceptance: each source written with an owner, a date, and the marked meter point it is expected to move. Wrong looks like "fix the leak" with nobody assigned. Stop rule: the correction requires opening structure or replacing a member, refer it to a contractor in writing - this shop does not open walls, and a treated rotten header is still a nest site. Hazard: never assign a customer a task on a ladder, on a roof or in a crawlspace.
Step 6 - Treat the labeled band and the confirmed voids, and know what is behind the drill. Read the label's Hazards to Humans and PPE section before the tank or duster is opened and wear exactly what it lists, because that PPE is a condition of use and an injected dust is an inhalation route a glove does not address. Apply a labeled non-repellent to the exterior band, entry points and penetrations, and inject labeled dust or foam only into voids where step 4 confirmed activity, at the label rate, since using a registered pesticide inconsistently with its labeling is a federal violation under FIFRA at 7 U.S.C. 136j(a)(2)(G). Acceptance: continuous band coverage plus each treated void listed by location, with product, rate and hole positions recorded and every drilled hole plugged before you leave. Wrong looks like a heavy perimeter over an active indoor satellite, which suppresses foragers and never reaches the brood. Stop rule: rain inside the rainfast window, reschedule the exterior. Hazard: before any hole is drilled, establish what is behind the surface - a stud cavity carries wiring, plumbing and sometimes gas, so scan the wall, keep clear of the run above and below a receptacle or switch, and if you cannot rule out a service in that cavity, do not drill it.
Step 7 - Re-read the meter and the counts together on interval. Return at 14 to 21 days, take the same 60-second counts at the same marked points at a similar hour, and re-read every marked moisture point. Acceptance: each marked trail count down at least 75 percent from its own baseline, judged per point rather than on the total, AND every marked moisture point below the gate set at step 3. Wrong looks like a falling total across two points where one has barely moved. Stop rule: a count flat at a point whose moisture reading is still above the gate, that is an open building defect and it does not get more product - it goes back to step 5 with the service manager owning the conversation. Hazard: re-injecting a void repeats step 6's behind-the-wall check every time, because a previous plug tells you nothing about the cavity next to it.
The record this produces
Per visit: frass locations and damage description, night count per marked point with time and direction, every marked meter point with its numbered reading, the parent-or-satellite call with its location or search area, water sources with owner, date and target meter point, treated voids with product and hole positions, and any contractor referral made.
The two series together let a service manager read this account correctly months later. Counts falling while readings fall is a closing account. Counts flat while a reading stays high is a building problem wearing a pest problem's clothes, and the response is a repair conversation, not another treatment. Counts falling everywhere while a new trail appears usually means the parent colony was never found, which sends the account back to step 4 rather than forward.
Worked pass: frass under a kitchen window head
A two-story house with a kitchen window on the north elevation. The customer sweeps up shavings from the counter every few days. Step 1 finds frass below a slit opening in the window head casing, fibrous with leg segments, so this is carpenter ant and not termite.
Step 2 works the exterior after dusk and finds two trails. Marked point A sits on the foundation below a stump at the property line, 60-second count 31. Marked point B sits at the kitchen window trim, count 14.
Step 3 meters five marked points: window header 24 percent, sill below it 19, adjacent stud 13, interior partition reference 10, crawlspace band joist 17. The worst point is 24, so step 3's gate fails and the moisture correction is recorded as a condition of closing.
Step 4 opens the stump, finds queen-right brood, and records parent colony at the stump with a satellite in the window header. Step 5 assigns three sources: a gutter overflowing directly onto the window head, missing head flashing, and a downspout discharging at that corner. The flashing is written as a contractor referral because it means opening trim.
Step 6 treats the labeled exterior band, the stump per label, and injects the header void at two positions, both plugged.
Day 21 re-read. Point A counts 6, down from 31, which is 25 fewer on a base of 31, or 81 percent, and clears the 75 percent gate. Point B counts 11, down from 14, which is 3 fewer on 14, or 21 percent, and fails. The meter says why: header 22 percent, sill 18, stud 13, partition 10, band joist 12. Two points cleared, and the header is still above the 15 percent gate because the flashing referral had not been done and the gutter still overflowed onto it.
Step 7's stop rule is taken as written. No additional product goes into that header, the open corrections go back to the service manager, and the account stays open. At day 45, with the gutter cleared and the flashing replaced, the header reads 13 percent and point B counts 1. Both gates clear on the same visit, which is the only condition under which this account is allowed to close.
