Carpenter Bee and Wood-Boring Insect Service
Purpose
Almost all of this work happens overhead, on a ladder, with dust falling back toward your face, so the safety sequence comes before the diagnosis: ladder footed on level ground at the correct angle with three points of contact, eye protection and the label's respiratory protection on before the duster goes up, nobody working under the ladder, and if anyone on site shows a systemic reaction to a sting - swelling away from the sting site, throat tightness, faintness - that is an emergency call, not something the crew manages.
The technical failure this standard exists to prevent is an ordering error. Seal a carpenter bee gallery before the brood inside it is dead and the emerging adults chew out through fresh wood or into the wall cavity, so the shop has paid for the repair and created a second hole. Treatment first, an open hole while the treatment works, sealing only after a dated recheck shows no new activity.
Scope
Covers carpenter bees and the common wood-boring beetle families a residential technician meets: powderpost beetles in flooring, trim and furniture, and old house borer in softwood framing. Covers gallery treatment, exit-hole monitoring, sealing and the surface change that prevents the next generation.
Does not cover termites and other wood-destroying organisms with a regulated inspection form; social stinging insects with a defended nest, owned by the stinging insect nest removal SOP; honey bee swarms, owned by the swarm relocation referral protocol; or structural repair, which the shop refers out.

Procedure
Step 1 - Identify the borer from the hole and the frass, not from the sighting. A carpenter bee entry is a clean round hole roughly half an inch across that turns with the grain a short way in, usually in bare, weathered or stained softwood. Powderpost beetle exits are far smaller, and the frass tells the family: a fine, flour-like powder that pours freely points to the lyctid group in hardwood pores, while gritty frass with distinct pellets points to the anobiid group. Old house borer exits are larger and oval in softwood framing. Acceptance: family named per location, with the hole size and frass description written down. Wrong looks like "bees, treated" on a fascia that is actually shedding lyctid powder from oak trim. Stop rule: the evidence is mud tubes or soil-packed galleries, stop and open the termite inspection instead. Hazard: collect frass into a bag rather than blowing or brushing it down, since fine wood dust overhead goes straight into eyes and airway.
Step 2 - Census and map every hole, and decide live or old. Count and map holes by elevation and member, then mark and date each one - a dab of marker beside it and a note on the sketch is enough, and a sealed paper cover works where you need certainty. Fresh activity shows sharp-edged holes, frass matching fresh wood color, and for carpenter bees an active hover. Acceptance: a total hole count broken out by elevation and member, with each hole marked and the date recorded. Wrong looks like counting holes on the elevation you can see from the driveway and calling that the census. Stop rule: an elevation that cannot be reached from a footed ladder, log it as uncensused and hand it to the service manager rather than reaching from the top rungs. Hazard: this is ladder work under OSHA's general industry rules at 29 CFR 1910.23, with the walking-working-surface fall protection trigger at 4 feet in 1910.28; where the job is classified construction it is 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M at 6 feet instead, and the split is by the activity, not by the building.
Step 3 - Read the surface condition, because that invites the next generation. Record which members are bare, weathered, stained-only or painted, and note woodpecker damage, often the larger loss on a carpenter bee account because the birds open galleries chasing larvae. Acceptance: each affected member recorded with its current finish and a named recommendation, with an owner and a date. Wrong looks like treating a bare cedar pergola every spring and never saying that a sound painted finish is what reduces attack. Stop rule: the customer will not change the finish, record it and reset the expectation in writing, because a bare softwood elevation is an annual service by design. Hazard: none beyond the ladder rules already named; do not scrape or sand any pre-1978 painted surface as part of this work, because that is a lead-dust job with its own rules and a different trade.
Step 4 - Treat the gallery and leave the hole open. Read the label's Hazards to Humans and PPE section before the duster is loaded and wear exactly what it lists, since that PPE is a condition of use and an overhead dust application is an inhalation and eye route no glove addresses. Apply the labeled product into each mapped hole at the label rate, because using a registered pesticide inconsistently with its labeling is a federal violation under FIFRA at 7 U.S.C. 136j(a)(2)(G). Acceptance: every mapped hole treated and left open, with product, rate and hole count recorded. Wrong looks like plugging as you go, which traps live brood behind the plug and sends the emerging adult out through new wood or into the cavity. Stop rule: any hole you cannot reach without leaving the ladder's safe working position, leave it untreated and logged rather than stretching for it. Hazard: dust applied above your head falls back down, so wear sealed eye protection and the label's respiratory protection under a written program per 29 CFR 1910.134, and keep the customer, children and pets off that elevation while dust is in the air.
Step 5 - Manage the flight without chasing it. Where males are hovering aggressively at a doorway or deck, tell the customer plainly that the hovering male has no sting and the female stings only when handled or trapped against skin - that one sentence removes most of the fear this account generates. Where the label supports it, treat the labeled surface band on the affected members. Acceptance: the customer briefing recorded, and any surface application recorded with product, rate and members treated. Wrong looks like a broadcast over blooming landscape to knock down hovering bees, which reaches pollinators the label protects and does nothing to the galleries. Stop rule: the label carries a pollinator restriction and the target is blooming or adjacent to bloom, do not apply. Hazard: anyone showing swelling away from the sting site, throat tightness or faintness after a sting gets emergency medical services immediately; the crew does not wait to see whether it passes.
Step 6 - Recheck on a dated interval before anything is sealed. Return at 30 days, re-inspect every marked hole and the surrounding members, and count new holes and fresh frass. Acceptance: zero new entry holes and no fresh frass on the affected members, judged per elevation rather than across the property. Wrong looks like sealing at the first visit because the crew is already on the ladder, which is the single most expensive shortcut on this account. Stop rule: any new hole on an elevation, do not seal that elevation - treat the new holes, re-mark, re-date and reset the 30-day clock, and record the reset so the office does not book the seal visit anyway. Hazard: the ladder rules from step 2 apply to the recheck exactly as they did to the census, and a ladder set on ground that has softened since the first visit is the common way this trip goes wrong.
Step 7 - Seal, finish, and confirm nothing was closed in. Once an elevation clears step 6, plug each hole with a tight-fitting dowel or wood filler, then finish over it with paint where the customer has agreed, since a sound painted surface is the durable half of this treatment. Acceptance: every hole on the census closed and recorded as closed, the sealed count matching the census plus any holes added at recheck, and the finish applied to the members named in step 3. Wrong looks like a sealed count that does not reconcile, which means a hole was missed or never mapped. Stop rule: the numbers do not reconcile, do not close the ticket - re-walk the elevation until every mapped hole is accounted for. Hazard: filler and finish carry their own SDS with their own vapor and skin routes, so ventilate the area, keep the container closed between holes, and wear what that product's label and SDS specify rather than assuming the pesticide PPE covers it.
The record this produces
Per visit: family identified per location with hole size and frass description, hole census by elevation and member, marking date, surface condition and finish recommendation with owner, treated hole count with product and rate, recheck date with new-hole count, and sealed hole count reconciled against the census.
The census-to-sealed reconciliation is the number the shop reads back. If eighteen holes were mapped and sixteen sealed, either two were missed or two were never on the map, and both return next spring. The dated recheck line is what protects the shop in a repair dispute: it shows the elevation was quiet before it was closed, which is the difference between a completed treatment and live brood behind new filler.
Worked pass: a rear fascia, a pergola beam and a deck rail
A single-story house, unpainted cedar fascia on the rear elevation, a stained pergola over the patio and a stained deck rail. The customer reports large bees hovering at the patio and shavings on the deck boards.
Step 1 identifies carpenter bee at all three locations: round entries about half an inch across, coarse shavings below them, and hovering males at the pergola. Step 2 censuses 8 holes on the rear fascia, 4 on the pergola beam and 2 on the deck rail, so 8 + 4 + 2 is 14 holes, all marked and dated. One fascia gallery has been opened along its length by a woodpecker and is recorded as damage rather than as an entry.
Step 3 records all three members as stained-only and recommends a sound painted finish on the fascia and rail after sealing, assigned to the customer. Step 4 treats all 14 holes at the label rate and leaves every one open. Step 5 gives the customer the hovering-male briefing and records it.
Day 30 recheck. The pergola and the deck rail show no new holes and no fresh frass, so both clear. The rear fascia shows 2 new entries with fresh, light-colored shavings below them, so that elevation fails step 6 and takes its stop rule: no sealing on the fascia, the 2 new holes treated, all fascia holes re-marked and re-dated, and the 30-day clock reset. The office is notified so the seal visit is not booked on the original date.
The pergola and rail proceed to step 7 and their 6 holes are sealed and reconciled. The fascia's census now stands at 8 original plus 2 new, which is 10.
Day 60 recheck on the fascia only. No new holes, no fresh frass, so it clears. Step 7 seals 10 holes and the count reconciles against the revised census. Sealed across the property is 6 plus 10, which is 16, against a final census of 14 plus 2, which is also 16. The finish work follows on the fascia and rail, and the account carries a note that the pergola stays bare by the customer's choice and will be re-inspected next spring.
