Service Vehicle Inspection and Secure Storage
Purpose
Everything else on the truck depends on hardware nobody complains about. A cracked containment tray, a hasp with its screws backing out, a spill kit raided for shop rags, an eye-flush jug someone drank half of: none announce themselves, and all fail on the day the jug tips.
This procedure inspects the vehicle as a piece of equipment, item by item, with a pass or fail on each. The inventory SOP governs what product may ride and how much; this one governs whether the box those containers ride in can hold a failure.
Scope
Covers the pre-trip and post-trip condition inspection of a pest control service vehicle: containment, compartment security hardware, the spill and first-aid kit, the label and SDS set, flush water, the extinguisher, and the secure overnight park.
Does not cover: what product may ride, quantity limits, transport rules and the daily inventory reconciliation, owned by the pesticide storage and inventory on the vehicle SOP; sprayer output and nozzle wear, owned by the sprayer calibration SOP; rinsate disposal, owned by the equipment decontamination and rinsate handling SOP; spill response itself, owned by the spill and over-application response SOP. Fleet mechanical work beyond the daily walk-around is a fleet task.

Procedure
Step 1 - Walk the outside of the box before you open it. Look for staining or a drip trail below the compartment door, a sprung door seal, a backed-out hinge screw, and any hole a container could have punched from the inside. Acceptance: nothing wet or stained below the compartment, door seating flat all the way round, hinge and hasp fasteners tight to the hand. Wrong looks like a chalky ring under the door the tech has walked past for a month. Stop rule: fresh liquid on the outside of the box, do not open it standing square in front of the door; treat it as a spill under the spill response SOP. Hazard: whatever is running out has already been running out for some time, so gloves and eye protection go on before you touch the latch.
Step 2 - Ventilate before you put your head or your hands inside. A closed box in the sun concentrates vapor from every seal and every wiped-down jug in it, so open it, stand upwind and to the side, and let it air. Acceptance: the compartment stands open for a stated dwell before any reach - a minute is a workable shop default - and nothing visible is leaking. Wrong looks like leaning in headfirst the moment the door swings. Stop rule: an odor strong enough to sting eyes or throat, close the door, move upwind, and do not re-enter until the source is identified from outside. Hazard: odor is never an all-clear either way; a box that stops smelling is not a box that is clear, so the dwell is a time, not a sniff test.
Step 3 - Inspect containment as a system, not as a tray. Check the liner or tray for cracks and pinholes, and confirm any drain plug is present and closed with nothing standing in the bottom. Acceptance: no crack that passes a fingernail, plug installed and closed, no standing liquid, and the tray still holds the volume it was specified to hold. Wrong looks like a plug left out after the last wash-down, which turns containment into a funnel onto the driveway. Stop rule: a cracked tray or a missing plug, the truck carries no liquid product until it is repaired or the product moves to a container providing its own containment. Hazard: standing liquid in a tray is unidentified until proven otherwise; do not wipe it up bare-handed, and do not smell it to identify it - read the compartment against the load list instead.
Step 4 - Test the security hardware the way a stranger would. Lock the compartment, then pull the door, twist the handle and lift the hasp. Check the hinge pins from the outside, because a padlocked door on removable pins is not locked. Acceptance: the compartment cannot be opened without the key, hinge pins are captive or welded, and the vehicle's pesticide signage is present and legible. Wrong looks like a lock that closes but a door that flexes enough to slip a hand through at the corner. Stop rule: any compartment holding pesticide that cannot be locked, do not load it - the product rides in a lockable compartment or it stays at the shop. Hazard: this is the control that stops a child at a driveway or a thief at a lunch stop from reaching product, so a failed lock is a same-day repair, not a Friday one.
Step 5 - Count the spill kit against the largest container on the truck. Absorbent capacity is sized to the worst single failure available: the biggest container aboard letting go all at once. A rated soak figure is a lab number, measured on a specified liquid with the pad saturated in a tray, while a real release spreads across the tray, down a bumper and onto a driveway, where a pad picks up a fraction of what it could hold. So acceptance: total rated absorbent capacity on board is at least 1.5 times the largest single container carried, a workable shop default for that gap, plus heavy gloves, eye protection, bags and a labeled waste container sized for the used absorbent, counted separately and never toward the absorbent figure. Wrong looks like a kit rated for a quart riding alongside a two-and-a-half gallon jug. Stop rule: capacity below 1.5 times the largest container, restock before departure rather than after the route. Hazard: none added at this step, it is a count made at the bench with containers closed.
Step 6 - Verify the flush water, the first aid card and the extinguisher. Pesticide labels typically direct 15 to 20 minutes of gentle eye flushing, and a duration is only a volume once you know the flow: at the 0.4 gpm ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 sets for an eyewash, 15 minutes is 6.0 gal and 20 minutes is 8.0 gal, so 5 gal at that rate runs dry near 12.5 minutes. A truck jug is a low-flow rinse, not a Z358.1 fixture - that standard, in the edition your employer or authority having jurisdiction has adopted, binds the shop's plumbed unit - so time the jug at the rate it actually delivers rather than assuming the label duration is covered. Acceptance: clean water on board for the label's stated duration at the rate the truck actually delivers, computed rather than eyeballed, soap present, the emergency card carries the national Poison Control line at 1-800-222-1222 with the shop's own numbers, the label and SDS set matches what is loaded, and the extinguisher shows a current monthly inspection and annual maintenance per 29 CFR 1910.157(e). Wrong looks like a half-empty jug and an SDS binder two products behind the load. Stop rule: no flush water or no label for a product aboard, the truck does not depart with that product. Hazard: check the extinguisher's gauge and pin at the truck rather than assuming the tag, because the tag records the last inspection and not this morning's condition.
Step 7 - Post-trip: unload, lock, and park where the truck is not the weak point. At end of day, return what may not stay aboard overnight, close and lock every compartment, take the keys, and park inside a fence, a bay or a locked yard rather than on the street. Acceptance: compartments locked and pulled to confirm, keys off the vehicle, the truck at the shop's designated secure location, and the day's sheet signed. Wrong looks like a locked box on an unlocked truck at a curb. Stop rule: no secure park available, offload product to the shop's storage rather than leaving it on a truck in the open, and note the exception on the sheet. Hazard: offloading at the end of a long day is when a jug gets dropped, so carry one container at a time with both hands and keep the closure upright.
The record this produces
A one-page daily sheet with a pass or fail against each of the seven steps, the tech's name, the date, and a line for any failed item with what was done about it. Weekly, the service manager signs a verification on a sampled truck. Consumables get their own three columns: absorbent capacity on board, largest container carried, and the 1.5x figure that capacity has to clear, so the step 5 comparison is visible rather than remembered.
The sheet is read after the fact more than during. When a spill happens on a Thursday, the Monday sheet shows whether the tray was sound and the kit was stocked; when a compartment is broken into, it shows the lock was tested. A failure column that fills with the same item on the same truck is a hardware problem to fix, not a tech to coach.
One pre-trip, filled in
Tuesday morning, route truck, four products aboard. Largest single container is a 2.5 gal jug of concentrate.
Steps 1 through 4 pass. No staining under the door, door seats on its seal, hinges tight. Compartment stood open for the one-minute dwell with no odor. Tray uncracked, plug in and closed, nothing standing. Locked and pulled: the door does not open without the key, hinge pins welded, signage legible.
Step 5 fails. The kit holds a pad pack rated to absorb 1.0 gal and a loose absorbent bag rated to 0.5 gal, so capacity on board is 1.0 plus 0.5, which is 1.5 gal, against a largest container of 2.5 gal. Matched to the container alone that is 2.5 minus 1.5, or a 1.0 gal shortfall, but acceptance is 1.5 times the container: 1.5 x 2.5 is 3.75 gal, so the real shortfall is 3.75 minus 1.5, or 2.25 gal. Stop rule taken: the truck does not depart. Five more pad packs rated 0.5 gal each are added, 5 x 0.5 which is 2.5 gal, bringing capacity to 1.5 plus 2.5, or 4.0 gal against the 3.75 gal required. The labeled waste container aboard is confirmed and counts toward nothing. The failure and the restock both go on the sheet.
Step 6 fails on the water. The labels here direct 15 to 20 minutes of eye flushing, which at 0.4 gpm is 6.0 to 8.0 gal; the 5 gal aboard buys about 12.5 minutes, so it is topped to 8 gal before departure. Soap present, emergency card current, SDS set matching all four products. Extinguisher checked at the truck rather than off the tag: needle in the green band, pin in and seal unbroken, tag showing this month's inspection and an annual within the year. Step 7 that evening: compartments locked and pulled, keys off the vehicle, truck inside the yard, sheet signed.
The useful part of that run is not the restock. It is that the kit was sized to the truck's old load and nobody re-sized it when the 2.5 gal concentrate was added, which is the drift this inspection exists to catch.
When the truck does not match the procedure
A shared or rented vehicle with no lockable compartment: pesticide does not ride in it, so the route gets a truck that locks or the stops get reassigned. A defect found mid-route: no further stops with product exposed, secure what is aboard, and return. Cold weather freezing the flush water: carry it in the cab rather than the box. And where the truck is out of service for fleet repair, the sheet moves to the replacement vehicle on day one, because a loaner is the vehicle least likely to have been checked.
