Silverfish and Occasional Invader Service

Purpose

An occasional invader is not a household pest that happens to live indoors. It is an exterior or crawlspace population plus a moisture condition plus an open path, and the bug on the bathroom floor is the last few inches of that chain. Treat the sighting and you get a clean floor for a week. Treat the chain and the account closes.

This standard makes the moisture reading a gate rather than an observation, puts numbered monitors in the harborage zones so the second visit is a count instead of an opinion, and forbids the reflex that wastes the most visits: an interior broadcast aimed where the customer saw one, which relocates the sighting and changes nothing about the population producing it.

Scope

Covers moisture-associated invaders at residential and light commercial accounts - silverfish and firebrats, springtails, millipedes, pillbugs, centipedes, earwigs, ground beetles and crickets - and the overwintering guild that enters in autumn: boxelder bugs, brown marmorated stink bugs, cluster flies and lady beetles.

Does not cover pantry and stored product pests, which look like an invader on a kitchen floor and are owned by the pantry SOP; rodent work, owned by the rodent exclusion SOP; or product selection, which runs through the label verification SOP.

Procedure

Step 1 - Identify the guild, because the guild decides the method. Collect specimens into a vial and sort into moisture-associated, overwintering, or stored-product. A springtail on a windowsill means free water near it; a millipede migration after heavy rain means an exterior detritus layer, and those animals die indoors within days regardless of what you spray. Acceptance: a guild name per complaint area, with a species where it changes the season or the site. Wrong looks like "small bugs, treated", which cannot route the next visit. Stop rule: a stored-product beetle or moth, stop and open the pantry SOP, because the source is a package no perimeter work touches. Hazard: use a vial, not fingers - centipedes bite, and several millipedes release a defensive secretion that stains skin and irritates eyes, so gloves on and hands off your face until washed.

Step 2 - Measure the moisture instead of estimating it. Read relative humidity at named points - crawlspace, basement, complaint room, one dry reference room - and put a moisture meter on suspect framing, sill or subfloor. Acceptance: a numbered reading at every named point, judged at the worst point rather than the average, against a shop default of below 60 percent relative humidity in crawlspaces and basements; tune it to your climate, but set one and hold it. Wrong looks like "damp crawlspace" on a ticket, which cannot be compared to next month. Stop rule: any point at or above the gate, no interior application - record, assign the correction, gate the follow-up on it. Hazard: before entering a crawlspace confirm the access is not a permit-required confined space and that no standing water contacts wiring; if it does, nobody enters until power to that space is off, and dry rodent droppings get misted rather than swept, since sweeping aerosolizes them.

Step 3 - Place numbered monitors in the harborage, not the complaint room. Lay sticky monitors flat along wall-floor junctions, under the water heater and laundry, at the crawlspace access, behind toilets and tub aprons, and in stored-paper areas. Acceptance: at least six monitors, each numbered, dated and assigned to a named zone. Wrong looks like monitors in room centers, where a wall-running insect never travels, returning zeros read as an all-clear. Stop rule: a zone the customer will not open, log it unmonitored rather than blank, because a blank reads later as a zero. Hazard: sliding a monitor under an appliance puts a hand into an unseen gap, so use a light and a tool rather than a bare reach, and place nothing inside the draft hood of a fuel-burning water heater.

Step 4 - Assign the moisture corrections with an owner and a date. List the drivers: a torn crawlspace vapor barrier, a dryer venting into the crawl, a leaking supply or trap, a downspout at the foundation, negative grade, an overwatered planter feeding springtails, condensation on uninsulated lines, a bath fan discharging into the attic. Acceptance: each item with an owner, a date, and one line naming which reading it should move. Wrong looks like "reduce moisture" with nobody assigned, which is how a shop treats the same crawlspace four times a year. Stop rule: the customer declines a driver the plan depends on, the service manager resets the expectation in writing before the next visit is booked. Hazard: never assign a customer an item that puts them in a crawlspace, on a ladder, or near a fuel-burning appliance vent.

Step 5 - Close the paths, and close nothing the building needs. Seal at door sweeps, thresholds, sill plates, utility penetrations, weep gaps that lost their screens, and for the overwintering guild the soffit, gable and attic vent screens and the siding-to-trim gaps. Acceptance: each closed path listed by location and material, the sweep gap checked against a light rather than eyeballed, and vent openings screened rather than blocked. Wrong looks like a caulked-over soffit vent or a blocked combustion air opening - a ventilation defect on one and a carbon monoxide hazard on the other, and any combustion air opening closed on an earlier visit gets reopened before anything else is sealed. Stop rule: overwintering account and the autumn flight has started, exclusion becomes a next-season task; switch this visit to step 7 rather than sealing the population inside the wall. Hazard: soffit and gable work is ladder work - footed level, three points of contact, no leaning past the rails, and stop if wind is moving the ladder.

Step 6 - Apply labeled product to the exterior band and named voids only. Read the label's Hazards to Humans and PPE section before the tank or duster is opened and wear exactly what it lists, since that PPE is a condition of use and a desiccant or borate dust is an inhalation route no glove addresses. Treat the labeled band at grade, entry points, penetrations and labeled crack-and-crevice or void sites at the label rate, because using a registered pesticide inconsistently with its labeling is a federal violation under FIFRA at 7 U.S.C. 136j(a)(2)(G). Acceptance: continuous labeled coverage of the band and named crevices, with product, rate and sites recorded. Wrong looks like an interior baseboard broadcast, putting residue across an occupied floor for an insect living in the wall. Stop rule: rain inside the label's rainfast window, reschedule the exterior. Hazard: never dust into a return plenum, an open supply duct or an occupied airstream, keep deposits out of gutters and drains, and respect the label's pollinator language.

Step 7 - Remove what is already inside mechanically. Vacuum live and dead insects, cast skins and frass with a HEPA-filtered vacuum, discard infested cardboard and stored paper the customer releases, and change out water-damaged material where it is the food source. Acceptance: complaint areas visibly clear at the end of the visit and the vacuum contents bagged, sealed and taken off site rather than emptied there. Wrong looks like a spray over an overwintering cluster in a window channel, which leaves a dead mass that then feeds dermestid beetles - the vacuum is the treatment there, not the tank. Hazard: bagged insect debris and old droppings are an inhalation route, so keep the HEPA filter seated, do not blow the exhaust across the room, and wear the respiratory protection the label or the dust level calls for under a written program per 29 CFR 1910.134.

Step 8 - Recount at interval and read moisture and count together. Return at 30 days, replace and count the same numbered monitors at the same locations, and re-read the same named moisture points. Acceptance: catch in each mapped zone down at least 60 percent from that zone's own baseline, judged per zone rather than on the house total, AND every moisture point below the gate set at step 2. Wrong looks like a falling total that hides one zone which has not moved. Stop rule: a zone flat while its moisture point is still above the gate is not a treatment failure and does not get more product - it returns to step 4 as an open correction. Hazard: re-entry into the crawlspace repeats step 2's checks every visit, because standing water and rodent activity both change between visits.

The record this produces

Per visit: guild and species per complaint area, every named moisture point with its numbered reading, the monitor map with catch per monitor and per zone, moisture corrections with owner and status, closed paths by location and material, product and target sites, and what was removed mechanically.

Two readings side by side make this SOP worth running. A count falling while humidity falls is a closing account. A count flat while humidity is still above the gate is an untreated condition, and the next action is a conversation, not another application. A count flat while humidity has cleared is the only case that justifies re-examining the method, and it is the one the service manager wants escalated.

Worked pass: a silverfish account with a crawlspace that will not clear

A single-story house over a crawlspace. The customer reports silverfish in the hall bath and the linen closet. Step 1 identifies silverfish from three specimens, so the moisture-associated method applies.

Step 2 reads four named points: crawlspace 74 percent, hall bath 58, kitchen 52, dry reference bedroom 54. The mean of 74, 58, 52 and 54 is 238 divided by 4, which is 59.5 percent, and a tech reading the mean would call the house dry. The acceptance is written on the worst point, so the crawlspace at 74 fails the 60 percent gate and step 2's stop rule fires on visit one: no interior application, correction assigned, follow-up gated.

Step 3 places eight numbered monitors in four zones: three in the crawlspace, two in the hall bath, one at the kitchen sink base, two in the linen closet. Day 0 catch is crawlspace 14, bath 9, kitchen 1, closet 4, so 14 + 9 + 1 + 4 is 28 across eight monitors. Step 4 assigns three drivers: a vapor barrier torn open across most of the crawl, a dryer duct discharging under the house, and a downspout at the corner nearest the bath.

Day 30: crawlspace 11, bath 2, kitchen 0, closet 1, so 11 + 2 + 0 + 1 is 14. The house total falls 28 to 14, which is 14 fewer on a base of 28, or 50 percent, and again a total-reader calls it progress. Per zone it does not clear. Bath 9 to 2 is 7 fewer on 9, 78 percent. Closet 4 to 1 is 3 fewer on 4, 75 percent. Kitchen 1 to 0 clears. Crawlspace 11 against a baseline of 14 is 3 fewer on 14, 21 percent, and fails its 60 percent gate. The re-read confirms why: crawlspace humidity is 71 percent, still above the gate, because the vapor barrier was never replaced and the dryer still vents under the house.

Step 8's stop rule is taken as written. No additional product goes into the crawlspace, the two open corrections go back with both numbers attached, and the interior zones stay on interval. The finding the record carries is the one that matters months later: the treatment was not failing, the building was still feeding the population.
