Spider and Web Management Service

Purpose

A spider account fails for a reason that is easy to miss on the ticket: most of the spiders the customer is complaining about never touch a treated surface. A cobweb or orb weaver hangs in its own silk, drops to prey, and returns. A residual band under it is doing almost nothing, which is why a shop can spray a house four times and get four callbacks with the webs back in the same soffit corners.

This standard makes the mechanical work the treatment - de-webbing including egg sacs, cutting the prey base, closing the entries ground hunters use - and puts the residual only where a spider crosses it. It also forks at the one place the stakes change: a medically significant species indoors is a monitoring and clutter job, not a heavier perimeter.

Scope

Covers exterior and interior spider work at residential and light commercial accounts: web builders on elevations, eaves, porches, decks and stored goods, ground hunters entering at grade, and the two North American groups worth treating differently, widow spiders and brown recluse.

Does not cover stinging insect nests, owned by the stinging insect nest removal SOP; recurring perimeter service, owned by the quarterly residential service SOP; or product selection, which runs through the label verification SOP.

Procedure

Step 1 - Identify the group before anything is removed. Collect specimens into a vial rather than photographing them, and sort into three working groups: web builders, ground hunters, medically significant species. Brown recluse is worth a hard character check, since it carries six eyes in three pairs where most spiders carry eight, and that character survives a rubbed-off violin marking. Acceptance: a group name for every complaint area on the ticket, a species name where the specimen is a widow or suspected recluse, or a written deferral naming where the specimen went and when the answer is due. Wrong looks like "spiders, treated", which cannot be read back against a count. Stop rule: a suspected recluse or widow off an interior surface, stop the routine service and call the service manager before the next placement. Hazard: handle specimens with a vial and lid, never a gloved pinch, and shake out stored gloves and boots before they go on, because a hunting spider takes shelter in exactly that fold.

Step 2 - De-web every accessible surface and take the egg sacs with it. Work eaves, soffit returns, porch ceilings, fixtures, window frames, deck rails and rail undersides with a web pole, and collect what comes down rather than dropping it into the shrub line. Acceptance: no remaining web on any accessible elevation surface at the end of the pass, and every egg sac bagged. Wrong looks like web pulled off the soffit face with the sacs left in the return corner, which reseeds the elevation in weeks. Stop rule: web out of reach from a footed ladder or pole, do not lean off the ladder; log it inaccessible and offer the elevation from a lift later. Hazard: ladder footed on level ground at the correct angle, three points of contact, and keep the pole entirely clear of the service drop and any overhead conductor, since a damp pole against a drop is an electrocution rather than a stretch. Wear eye protection - overhead de-webbing puts debris, dust and the occasional live spider straight down your face.

Step 3 - Cut the prey base, starting with lighting. Spiders sit where the food is, and on most houses the food is the insect cloud at an exterior light. Walk the exterior at dusk where the account allows it and record which fixtures pull insects. Acceptance: each attracting fixture listed with one recommendation - relocate it away from the door, switch to a lamp with less short-wavelength output, or put it on a motion switch - with an owner and a date. Wrong looks like a lighting note with nobody assigned, which is how the same soffit corner is re-webbed quarterly for two years. Stop rule: the customer declines, record the refusal in writing and reset the expectation before the next visit is booked, because a de-web-only program on a lit elevation is a monthly service by design. Hazard: none beyond ordinary exterior walking. Do not open or relamp a fixture; that is electrical work and outside this procedure.

Step 4 - Close the ground-level entries. Ground hunters come under door sweeps, at garage door corner seals, through weep gaps that lost their screens, and at utility penetrations. Acceptance: each gap listed with location and owner, and the door sweep gap checked against a straightedge or a light rather than eyeballed. Wrong looks like a general "seal gaps" line, which nobody executes. Stop rule: the entry is a structural defect, a rotted threshold or failed flashing, refer it out - a treated rotten sill is still an open door. Hazard: kneeling at a garage door corner puts hands under a door on a live opener, so unplug the opener or set the door in manual release before hands enter the track area, and if the door has already come down on the tools nobody reaches back in until it is unplugged.

Step 5 - Apply the labeled residual only where a spider crosses it. Read the label's Hazards to Humans and PPE section before the tank or duster is opened and wear exactly what it lists, because that PPE is a condition of use and a dust load is an inhalation route a glove does not address; where the label lists a respirator, it is protection only under a written program with medical evaluation and fit testing per 29 CFR 1910.134, so without that program the duster stays on the truck. Place product on the surfaces hunting spiders cross - the grade band, thresholds, garage perimeters, labeled crack-and-crevice and void sites at penetrations - at the label rate, since using a registered pesticide inconsistently with its labeling is a federal violation under FIFRA at 7 U.S.C. 136j(a)(2)(G). Acceptance: continuous labeled coverage of the intended band and named crevices, with product, rate and target sites on the ticket. Wrong looks like fogging the soffit line to reach web builders, which wets the elevation, drifts, and leaves the spider hanging above the deposit. Stop rule: rain inside the label's rainfast window or irrigation due, reschedule the exterior rather than washing it into the yard. Hazard: keep every deposit out of gutters, downspout discharges and drains, respect the label's pollinator language on blooming vegetation, and never direct an application into a meter base or service entrance.

Step 6 - Where a medically significant species is confirmed indoors, switch to monitoring and clutter. Recluse populations live in undisturbed storage, and the population is counted on glue boards laid flat against the wall-floor junction, not estimated from sightings. Place at least eight boards, twelve on a house with a garage and a basement, each numbered and mapped. Acceptance: every board numbered, mapped, dated and assigned to a named zone. Wrong looks like boards tossed into room centers, where a wall-running spider never goes, producing zeros that read as an all-clear. Stop rule: the customer asks for a heavy interior broadcast instead, refuse and escalate - a broadcast does not reach harborage inside stacked storage and it puts residue where children and pets contact it. Hazard: reaching blind behind stored cardboard is how techs get bitten, so pull stacks from the top with gloves and a light rather than into a gap. A bite goes to that person's own physician with the specimen if captured; the shop reports what it found and gives no medical advice.

Step 7 - Recount on interval and read each zone on its own. Return at 30 days, replace and recount the same numbered boards at the same locations, and de-web the exterior on the same pass. Acceptance: catch in each mapped zone down at least 50 percent from that zone's own baseline, evaluated per zone rather than on the house total, AND no new web with egg sacs on a surface cleared last visit. Wrong looks like averaging the house, which lets one clean floor carry a storage area that has not moved. Stop rule: a zone flat or up while the rest fall, stop adding product there and treat it as untreated harborage - re-inspect the clutter, confirm whether the gating item was actually cleared, escalate before another application. Hazard: replacing boards under stored goods puts hands back into the same harborage, so the light and the top-down rule from step 6 apply every visit, not only the first.

The record this produces

Per visit: group or species per complaint area with collection points, de-web coverage by elevation with egg sacs removed, lighting findings with owner and date, entry gaps with owner and status, product and target sites for any application, and the numbered board map with catch per board and per zone.

The zone counts turn the second visit into a measurement rather than an opinion. The service manager reads the history for one pattern above all others: a zone that will not fall while its neighbors do, which nearly always means untreated harborage or a conducive item never cleared, and which must trigger a re-inspection instead of another application. The lighting and clutter lines with owners and dates are what the shop reads back in a dispute.

Worked pass: a suspected recluse account over two visits

A two-story house, attached garage, finished basement. The customer reports large brown spiders. Step 1 collects three specimens from the garage; all three carry six eyes in three pairs, so the identification is brown recluse and the tech takes step 1's stop rule and calls the service manager before placing anything else.

Step 6 places twelve numbered boards: four garage, four basement, two first floor, two second floor. Step 2 de-webs the exterior and bags nine egg sacs off the porch ceiling and two soffit returns. Step 3 records the porch fixture and the garage coach light as the attracting fixtures, both assigned to the customer at two weeks. The clutter list gates on one item, a stored cardboard wall along the basement south wall, to move into sealed totes.

Day 30 baseline: garage 11 spiders, basement 6, first floor 1, second floor 0, so 11 + 6 + 1 + 0 is 18 across twelve boards.

Day 60: garage 3, basement 5, first floor 0, second floor 0, so 3 + 5 + 0 + 0 is 8. The house total falls 18 to 8, which is 10 fewer on a base of 18, or 56 percent, and a tech reading the total calls it a pass.

Read per zone, as the acceptance requires, it is not. Garage 11 to 3 is 8 fewer on 11, 73 percent, clears. First floor 1 to 0 clears. The second floor had a zero baseline, so it cannot produce a percentage at all and is recorded as zero at both visits rather than as a pass. The basement runs 6 to 5, 1 fewer on 6, 17 percent, and fails its 50 percent gate, so step 7's stop rule fires: no additional product in that zone, re-inspect, escalate.

The re-inspection finds the cardboard wall still in place, so the harborage was never disturbed. That is the whole finding, because a zone that will not fall with its clutter intact is a different problem from a zone that will not fall with the clutter gone, and only the second one means the method was wrong. The expectation is reset in writing, the basement baseline restarts once the totes are in, and the exterior stays on its de-web interval.
