Stinging Insect Nest Removal

Purpose

A stinging insect call ends one of two ways: the colony is dead and the nest is physically dealt with, or the job is deferred with the customer told what to avoid until you return. Nothing in between counts as complete.

Two failure modes drive the sequencing. A defensive colony does not sting once, and a technician coming off a ladder at eight feet is a worse injury than the stings. The quieter failure is a nest knocked down or surface sprayed, foragers returning to a site with no nest and no residual, and the customer stung in their own doorway two days later. Both come from starting treatment before the escape route, the reaction plan and the nest location are settled.

Scope

Covers yellowjackets, paper wasps, bald faced hornets, mud daubers and cicada killers at residential and light commercial accounts, in aerial, ground and structural void nests.

Does not cover honey bees: a positive honey bee identification leaves at step 3 for the bee swarm relocation referral protocol, which owns identification and the beekeeper handoff. Does not cover wildlife in the same void, and does not re-teach product selection or application technique (wasp nest removal how-to). This is the shop's standing instruction for how the visit is sequenced, gated and recorded.

Also out of scope: any nest not reachable from a portable ladder set at a proper angle on level ground, and any nest on a roof surface. Those are scheduled as a two person job with equipment decided in the office.

Procedure

1. Run the pre-visit safety screen before the truck is assigned. Dispatch writes four answers on the ticket: what the insects look like and where they go in and out; nest height and mounting; whether anyone at the address has a known sting allergy or an auto-injector; whether anyone has already sprayed it. Acceptance: four answers, none blank, no "not sure" on the allergy question. Wrong looks like a ticket reading "wasps out back," and the stop rule is do not dispatch, call back and fill the screen, because the technician cannot ask these from a ladder. Hazard: a flagged allergy puts the customer into the step 4 reaction plan, and a nest already hit with a hardware store aerosol is defensive before you park.

2. Observe from outside the flight line before unloading anything. Stand 15 to 20 ft off at an angle to the traffic and watch two minutes by the clock. Acceptance: you can point at the entrance and give a rough count entering and leaving per minute. Wrong looks like insects in the area with no entrance found, or two streams converging on different points, and the stop rule is never treat a nest you have not located: a second stream is a second nest, so treating one leaves the customer stung by the other. Hazard: standing in the flight line reads to a yellowjacket colony as blocking the entrance, so cross the line rather than walk along it, and never stand beneath an aerial nest looking up at it.

3. Confirm the species before any product is opened. Yellowjackets are bare bodied, hard yellow and black banded, flying a fast direct line into a hole. Paper wasps hang their legs in flight over an open comb with no envelope. Bald faced hornets build a grey enclosed football. Honey bees are furry, amber to brown, carrying pollen on the hind legs. Cicada killers are large, solitary, digging burrows in bare soil. Acceptance: you can name the insect and the nest type. Wrong looks like pollen on the legs, waxy rather than papery comb, or a cluster with no envelope, and the stop rule on any of those is close the product, leave, and move to the bee referral protocol. Cicada killers get an education call, not a treatment. Hazard: opening an aerosol at a honey bee colony in a structure commits you to comb, honey and a repair this procedure does not cover.

4. Fix the escape route and the sting reaction plan before the first application. Name the path you will walk if the colony comes out and clear it of hose, toys and ladder legs. Unlock the vehicle, phone in a buttoned pocket. Confirm where your auto-injector is, and the customer's if step 1 flagged the household, and that a second person knows where you are. Acceptance: path clear end to end, vehicle opens on one pull. Wrong looks like the only clear path running under the nest, and the stop rule there is reposition or defer. Hazard: anyone stung more than a few times, or once with facial swelling, throat tightness or hives spreading away from the sting, gets emergency medical services called immediately and does not drive themselves; the shop keeps a trained first aid responder available under 29 CFR 1910.151 rather than relying on the household.

5. Wear the PPE the label calls for, and set the timing. Full veil or bee suit for any aerial or void nest, gloves, boots, cuffs closed at wrist and ankle. Treat aerial and ground yellowjacket nests at dusk or first light with foragers inside, under a red filtered light rather than a white beam. Acceptance: no skin gap between glove and sleeve, no white light on the entrance, light set on the ground rather than held in the treating hand. Wrong looks like a mid afternoon call on a mature ground colony, and the stop rule is reschedule to dusk and say why. Hazard: where the label calls for respiratory protection, that respirator runs under a written program with fit testing and medical evaluation per 29 CFR 1910.134, not a nuisance dust mask off the truck, which matters most dusting an overhead void where dust falls back into your breathing zone.

6. Apply by nest type, and seal nothing today. Aerial nest: jet stream aerosol into the bottom entrance from the label distance, sustained until the envelope is wetted at the opening. Ground nest: labelled dust into the entrance and the surrounding two to three inches, left open. Structural void: dust through the entry point and any adjacent void access, left open. Acceptance: product visibly at the entrance and traffic dropping inside the first minute on aerosol work. Wrong looks like liquid used in a void above a finished ceiling, and the stop rule is switch to dust, because a wetted void stains through and drives survivors into the living space. Hazard: sealing a void the same day traps a live colony behind the closure and drives it toward the interior, so closure is gated on the step 7 zero count.

7. Return, count, then remove or close. Come back no sooner than the next day and repeat the step 2 observation for three minutes by the clock. Acceptance: zero insects entering or leaving across all three minutes. Wrong looks like one to five returning foragers, which is normal residual and takes one repeat application plus another next day count; more than five entering purposefully means the nest was never reached or there is a second one, and that returns to step 2 rather than to more product. Stop rule: no aerial nest comes down and no void is sealed until a three minute zero count is recorded. Hazard: bagging an aerial nest puts your hands at the nest, so bag it with the veil on and the ladder footed, closing the bag before it comes down.

8. Hand over, then set the release. Walk the customer to the treated point and say what normal looks like: stragglers that were out foraging return, circle the old site and die off, and that is not a failure. Give the exclusion instruction as a distance and a date, never as "stay away." Acceptance: the customer repeats back where not to walk and until when. Wrong looks like nobody home and the instruction left on a door hanger at an address flagged for a sting allergy, and the stop rule is a phone call before you leave the driveway. Hazard: hold the exclusion on a ground nest until the next day count, because a mown or stepped on entrance releases a defensive response from survivors.

The record this produces

Every visit writes one service record, on the ticket, before the truck moves:

  • Screen answers: species cue, location and height, sting allergy yes or no, prior spraying yes or no. Dispatch writes them; the technician corrects them on arrival.
  • Nest type and location, specific enough to find without the customer: "ground nest, 4 ft east of the rear downspout," not "back yard."
  • Product, formulation, concentration, amount, site and time. The pesticide application record SOP owns that field list and its retention rule; this ticket feeds it.
  • Observation counts: the per minute estimate at step 2 and the three minute return count at step 7 with its result.
  • Exclusion instruction given, to whom, and the release condition.
  • Deviations: anything removed before a zero count, any deferral, and the supervisor who approved it.

Who reads it later: the technician on the return, who needs the entrance location and the first count to judge whether the second is progress; and the office when the customer calls in six weeks about the same soffit, because a documented zero count followed by new activity is a new colony rather than a failed treatment.

Worked pass: a soffit colony at a two story rental

Screened at step 1: yellowjackets by description, entering a soffit seam at the second floor gable, tenant reports no allergy, landlord admits to two cans of hardware store aerosol last weekend. Four answers present, ticket dispatches flagged for prior spraying.

Step 2: observed from about 18 ft at an angle, traffic roughly 20 to 25 insects a minute into one seam. Entrance located, one stream, pass. Step 3: bare banded bodies, fast direct entry, no pollen loads. Yellowjackets, pass.

Step 4 fails. The only clear path away from the ladder position runs under the gable, because the tenant's car blocks the driveway side and a fence closes the other. The stop rule forbids an escape route beneath the colony, so the technician defers, calls the supervisor, has the car moved for the next evening, books a dusk return with a second technician, and tapes off the gable end at ground level. Deviation logged: deferred at step 4, escape route obstructed, supervisor approved.

Return visit: car moved, path clear, second technician footing the ladder. Step 5, veil and suit, cuffs closed, dusk, red filtered light on the ground off axis from the seam. Step 6, labelled dust into the seam and the adjacent soffit vent, left open, nothing sealed; traffic stops inside the first minute.

Step 7 the next evening: the three minute count returns two foragers in the first minute, none in the second or third. Two sits inside the one to five band, so the branch is one repeat application and another next day count, not a removal. Dust repeated. Second return: zero across all three minutes, so the seam and the vent are sealed on that visit and not before.

Step 8: handover to tenant and landlord with the straggler explanation and a release date. The record carries both counts (two, then zero), the deferral and its reason, both applications with amount and time, and the closure date. Read back in six weeks it answers the question that matters: activity was at a documented zero before the void was closed, so new traffic at that gable is a new entry point rather than a failed treatment.
