Termite Bait Station Installation Standard
Purpose
A bait system does not find termites. Foraging termites find the station, and only if it sits in soil they were already going to cross. That makes install geometry the whole job: spacing, distance from the wall, depth relative to grade, and continuous soil contact around the barrel. A station set in an oversized hole with loose backfill is a hollow post that termites walk past for three years while the shop bills monitoring visits against it.
The second half of the job is the as-built map. Everything the monitoring SOP does later depends on a tech who has never seen this yard finding station 14 under six inches of new mulch, and on the file saying where a station could not be placed at all.
Scope
Covers layout, utility clearance, augering, setting stations, loading the device or cartridge, numbering, mapping, customer briefing and site restoration for exterior in-ground termite stations at homes and small commercial buildings.
Does not cover monitoring intervals, hit response or cartridge replacement, owned by the termite bait station monitoring schedule SOP. Soil work is the liquid termiticide trench and treat standard, transaction documentation is the wood destroying insect report SOP, and above-ground stations on active mud tubes follow the label rather than this procedure.

Procedure
Step 1 - Lay the run out on paper before the auger comes off the truck. Wheel the foundation perimeter, then mark station positions at the label's stated maximum spacing, commonly 10 feet on center for the systems in common residential use, and within the label's stated distance of the foundation. Add stations at conducive points regardless of interval: a leaking hose bib, a wood pile, a stump, a downspout discharge. Acceptance: a numbered plan with a total count, a spacing figure between each pair, and every obstruction longer than the maximum spacing marked as a gap. Wrong looks like pacing it off and calling it about every ten feet, which drifts to 14 on the long side. Stop rule: an obstruction run forces spacing past the label maximum, note the gap and call the service manager rather than stretching the interval. Hazard: none at this step, it is layout on foot, but stay off wet slopes and out of a running irrigation arc.
Step 2 - Clear the ground for buried lines, including the ones one-call does not mark. Place the one-call ticket on your state's required notice, then separately identify customer-owned lines, because a public locate generally does not cover irrigation laterals, low voltage lighting, invisible fence wire, or a gas run to a grill or pool heater. Acceptance: a live ticket number, operator marks on the ground, and the customer's account of the irrigation valves, controller zones and any private gas run sketched onto the plan. Wrong looks like assuming the 811 marks cover the sprinkler system. Stop rule: a proposed position inside the tolerance zone of a marked line, move the station and note the move. Hazard: if the auger strikes a gas line, everyone leaves immediately and upwind, no vehicle is started, no phone or radio is used in the area, nothing is used to crimp the line, and 911 and the operator are called from well clear; strike a buried conductor and nobody touches the auger or the wet ground around it until the utility clears it.
Step 3 - Auger to the station's own diameter and depth. Use the bit matched to the station body, cut vertical, and take the hole deep enough that the lid finishes flush with grade or slightly below. Acceptance: hole diameter within a bit size of the barrel so backfill is a thin annulus rather than a void, bottom in native soil rather than gravel or fill, hole plumb. Wrong looks like a wallowed hole worked back and forth to clear a root, which leaves the station in loose fill with no continuous soil face. Stop rule: refusal on rock, footing spoil or hardpan, relocate along the wall and record the actual position; if that breaks label spacing, go to the step 1 stop rule. Hazard: a powered auger stores torque and will spin the operator when the bit catches, so use both handles, keep feet outside the bit path, keep loose sleeves clear, and set the clutch rather than muscling a bind; wear hearing protection, and if the hole passes through concrete use a shroud with HEPA collection for the silica, controlled under 29 CFR 1926.1153 or 29 CFR 1910.1053 depending on the activity.
Step 4 - Set the station and prove soil contact before the lid goes on. Drop the station, backfill the annulus in small lifts, and tamp each lift with a rod rather than stamping the top. Acceptance: a knife blade will not slide down between barrel and soil anywhere around the circumference, the lid finishes flush to about a quarter inch below grade so a mower deck clears it, and the station does not rock under hand pressure. Wrong looks like a proud lid an inch above turf, which is a mower strike, a trip hazard and a complaint in one object. Stop rule: soil contact cannot be achieved because the hole is in gravel or rubble, the station is not installed there; relocate and record. Hazard: hands go to ground level in soil that may hold glass, fence staples and fire ants, so gloves stay on, and back the tamping rod out rather than pulling a bound station up by the rim.
Step 5 - Load the monitoring device or bait cartridge exactly as the label directs. Seat the wood interceptor or the bait cartridge to full contact with the station's internal shoulders, in the orientation the label shows, then lock the lid. Acceptance: device fully seated with no rattle, correct type for the phase the agreement specifies, lid locked so a child or a dog cannot open it, lot number on the ticket. Wrong looks like an active cartridge installed on a label that requires monitoring first, or an interceptor set proud so it never contacts soil moisture and never softens. Stop rule: wrong device on the truck for the phase, do not substitute; leave the station empty, lock it, flag the map and return. Hazard: the actives in the common systems are chitin synthesis inhibitors, noviflumuron, hexaflumuron and diflubenzuron among them, and their label PPE applies at handling even though acute toxicity is low; the routes here are dermal contact and hand to mouth transfer afterward, so label gloves go on before the cartridge is unwrapped and hands are washed before eating, drinking or using a phone. An unlocked lid turns this into an ingestion route for a child or a pet, which is why the lock is an acceptance condition and not a preference.
Step 6 - Number, mark and map every station from a fixed datum. Number sequentially in one direction from one fixed point, commonly the front door, writing the number on the lid and on the map. Acceptance: each station carries two measured offsets from permanent features, such as a slab corner and a driveway corner, so it can be found under mulch or new sod, and the map total equals the ground count. Wrong looks like numbers assigned in install order as the tech crossed the yard, which puts 4 and 11 side by side and guarantees a missed station next visit. Stop rule: map count and ground count disagree, walk the perimeter until they reconcile; do not adjust the map to match memory. Hazard: none at this step, but do not write with your back to traffic on a road frontage.
Step 7 - Restore the site and verify what you disturbed still works. Replace turf plugs and mulch, remove all spoil, and where the auger worked next to an irrigation head or a low voltage fixture, run that zone and watch it. Acceptance: every zone touched runs, each head near a station pops and throws its pattern, lights on that circuit come on, no spoil left on turf or hardscape. Wrong looks like leaving without testing, so the customer finds a cut lateral as a wet patch a week later and the shop owns a repair it cannot disprove. Stop rule: a head that will not rise or a zone that will not pressurize, tell the customer before you leave and log it the same day. Hazard: standing water over a cut landscape circuit is a shock path, so if a zone trips a breaker or a fixture is submerged nobody reaches into the water; the circuit is shut off at the panel first and an electrician handles line voltage work.
Step 8 - Brief the customer on what breaks the program. Walk the customer to two or three stations and say plainly: do not mow over the lids, do not bury them under mulch or sod, do not apply a soil insecticide or repellent granule over the station line, and call rather than lift a lid. Acceptance: the customer can point at one station unaided, and the ticket records that the no-repellent instruction was given. Wrong looks like handing over a paper and leaving, after which a lawn service treats the beds and the stations go quiet for reasons nobody connects. Stop rule: the customer says they will keep applying their own perimeter product, do not close the install as complete; escalate, because a repellent barrier over the station line makes the program untestable. Hazard: none at this step, though keep the customer clear of any hole not yet backfilled.
The record this produces
On the install record: station count, spacing between each consecutive pair, distance from foundation, device type and lot number, install date, the numbered map with two offsets per station, every gap with its cause, any relocation with the distance moved, and the irrigation or lighting verification result.
The monitoring SOP reads the map first and the count second, so a station in the ground and not on the map is invisible for the life of the agreement. The service manager reads gaps across installs, because one gap is a driveway and four on one street is a layout habit. If a claim arrives, the spacing column shows the system was installed to label rather than to convenience.
Worked pass: single family, 168 feet of foundation perimeter
The plan wheels 168 linear feet of foundation. At the label maximum of 10 feet on center, 168 divided by 10 is 16.8, so the perimeter takes 17 stations, plus 3 at conducive points, a dripping hose bib, a wood pile and an old stump, for 20 planned.
Step 3 fails at planned station 12. The auger refuses at about 5 inches on buried footing spoil. The tech relocates 3 feet along the wall toward station 13, which makes the 11 to 12 span 10 plus 3, or 13 feet, and the 12 to 13 span 10 minus 3, or 7 feet. Thirteen feet is over the 10 foot maximum, so the step 1 stop rule fires. Rather than stretch it, the tech sets an extra station midway in that 13 foot span, splitting it into 6.5 and 6.5 feet. Perimeter count goes from 17 to 18 and the total from 20 to 21.
Steps 4 through 8 pass. Every station takes the knife blade test around the full circumference, all 21 lids finish flush to a quarter inch below grade, and the map count of 21 matches the ground count of 21. The irrigation zone crossing stations 9 through 12 runs and all four heads throw. The customer repeats the no-repellent instruction back and points at station 3 unaided. The record notes station 12 relocated 3 feet with the reason, and the added station numbered 12A with its own offsets so next quarter's numbering does not shift.
