Drain Cleaning Service Standard

Purpose

Two things go wrong on a cable job and both are expensive. The first is the injury: a sectional or drum machine takes a hand off a technician in the time it takes to notice the cable has wrapped, and it is nearly always a glove, a rag or a long exposed span that did it. The second is the callback: the water goes down, the tech leaves, and the customer floods a floor that night because the line was opened rather than cleared. This standard fixes both with the same discipline, a defined machine setup and a volume flow test the drain either passes or does not.

Scope

Covers cable clearing of a residential branch drain, main line or building sewer from a fixture, cleanout or pulled closet, ending with a verified flow test and a written cause.

It does NOT cover jetting, which has its own standard because it has its own pipe-condition gate, and it does not cover camera inspection, which the sewer camera SOP owns including defect coding and surface locating. It does not cover repairs to a line the cable damaged or found broken; that is a scoped repair with its own quote.

The handoff that fails: a tech clears a main twice in four months and neither ticket says why, so the third call is priced as another clearing rather than as the repair the customer has already paid for twice.

Procedure

  1. Ask four questions before any cap comes off, and record the answers. Which fixtures are affected, when it started, whether any chemical drain opener has been poured, and whether this line has backed up before. Acceptance: four answers on the ticket. The chemical question is a safety question, not a curiosity: caustic drain opener sitting in a trap will splash back up the cable and burn skin and eyes, so if the answer is yes or unknown, a face shield and chemical-resistant gauntlets go on and the standing water is flushed with clear water before a cable enters it.

  2. Decide branch or main from the fixture pattern, then pick the access. One fixture affected is a branch; two or more on different fixture groups, or a floor drain surcharging, is a main. Acceptance: the access chosen matches that read, exterior cleanout for a main, trap arm or tub shoe for a branch. Wrong looks like cabling a kitchen branch when the laundry and the floor drain are also backing up: you will clear 15 ft of pipe that was never the problem and hand the customer a bill for it.

  3. Protect the area for wastewater before the first foot of cable moves. Drop cloths and a catch bucket under the opening, nitrile gloves and splash goggles on, nothing eaten on site, hands washed before leaving, and the machine plugged into GFCI protection because you are running a corded motor next to standing water. Acceptance: containment down, PPE on, GFCI confirmed by its test button. Wrong looks like a cable spraying a customer's ceiling on retrieval, which turns a clearing into a restoration claim.

  4. Set the machine so the exposed cable span is short and stays short. Bring the drum or the first section within arm's reach of the pipe entry, keep the unsupported span between machine and opening as short as the guide tube allows, foot pedal under your own foot, and nobody else touching the machine. Wear the machine manufacturer's cable mitts only: a loose glove, a leather glove or a rag wrapped around the cable is what pulls a hand into a wrap, and a long unsupported span is what lets the cable whip. Acceptance: span short, mitts on, sleeves and any lanyard secured, hair tied back.

  5. Match cable diameter and head to the pipe you are entering. Small cable for a 1-1/2 in trap arm, heavier cable for a 3 in or 4 in main, and a head sized to open the line rather than to bore a hole through the blockage. Acceptance: cable and head named on the ticket with the pipe size. Wrong looks like a heavy main cable forced into a lavatory arm, which kinks in the fittings and can split an old trap arm you will then be replacing at your own cost.

  6. Feed by hand with the machine off until you meet resistance. You want to know where the stoppage is, in feet from the access, before power is applied. Acceptance: distance to first resistance recorded. Wrong looks like running the cable under power from the opening, which wastes the one measurement that tells you whether you are dealing with a trap, a branch tie-in or something out at the property line.

  7. Work the stoppage in short advances and let the head cut. Advance a foot or two under power, hold, retract slightly, advance again. Acceptance: the cable free-spins past the obstruction and pulls back without loading. If the cable binds, torques up or stops turning, take your foot off the pedal immediately and back it out under control; do not power through a bind and do not run in reverse under load, because that is how a cable kinks in the line and becomes a retrieval job that ends in excavation.

  8. Prove the line with a volume test, not a trickle. Fill the tub or a laundry sink to near overflow and release it, or run the affected fixtures together for at least 5 minutes. Acceptance: the released volume goes away without the level rising at any fixture or floor drain. Wrong looks like water going down slowly, or a floor drain burping while the tub empties: that is a line still restricted or a stoppage further downstream. Do not close the ticket on a fixture that drains; the failure mode this test exists to catch is the tech who cleared a hole through grease that closes again by evening.

  9. Retrieve the cable, read what came back, and inspect the cable itself. Roots, grease, soap and hair, wipes and rags, or scale each tell you a different story and a different recommendation. Acceptance: the cause named in plain words on the ticket. Inspect the cable for kinks and the head for missing teeth as it comes in: a cracked or badly kinked cable is retired at the truck, not run one more time, because it fails inside somebody's pipe.

  10. Recommend a camera when the cause is unknown or the line has repeated. Roots recovered from a main, a second clearing on the same line within a year, or a cable that hung at a consistent distance are all reasons to look. Acceptance: camera either performed the same visit or offered and declined in the customer's words. Wrong looks like a third clearing sold on the same line with no inspection, which the customer will eventually recognize as a subscription rather than a repair.

  11. Decontaminate and leave the site cleaner than the stoppage did. Cable and head rinsed and treated per the machine manufacturer, work area wiped down and disinfected, fixtures wiped, containment bagged. Acceptance: no residue at the access, nothing left in the customer's bin that they have to handle. Wash hands before touching the truck, phone or paperwork.

When the line does not behave

Cable will not pass a hard stop at a consistent distance: repeated stops at the same footage are a structural defect, not a soft blockage. Stop, do not force it, and route to camera. The stoppage clears but the customer says it has happened four times: the ticket says so and the recommendation is inspection, even where they only want the drain to run today. Drain opener is present in standing water: flush with clear water first and keep it off skin and eyes, and if the customer poured a full container into a full trap, tell them plainly why the next tech will ask the same question. The cleanout cap will not come off without breaking the fitting: quote the cleanout repair rather than snapping it, because a broken cleanout under a slab is a far worse day than a rescheduled clearing.

The record this produces

One clearing record per event, on the property record so repeats are visible:

  • The four intake answers, in the customer's words for the chemical question
  • Fixture pattern observed, branch or main, and the access used
  • Distance to first resistance, cable size and head used
  • What came back on the cable and the named cause
  • Flow test performed, what volume, and the observed result
  • Camera performed, offered and declined, or not indicated, with the reason
  • Any damage found or caused, photographed

The next tech reads distance-to-resistance and cause before they arrive. The lead reads repeat counts on one address and converts a clearing pattern into a repair conversation.

Worked pass: kitchen and laundry backing up, 1970s house over a basement

Intake: kitchen sink and laundry standpipe both backing up, started two days ago, no drain opener poured, and it happened once last winter.

  • Step 1 to 2: four answers recorded; two fixture groups affected plus a damp floor drain, so this is a main. Access taken at the exterior cleanout rather than the kitchen trap arm.
  • Step 3: containment down, PPE on, GFCI tested.
  • Step 4: drum brought to within arm's reach of the cleanout, guide tube in, mitts on.
  • Step 5: 3/4 in cable with a cutting head for a 4 in main, recorded on the ticket.
  • Step 6: fed by hand, first resistance at 38 ft.
  • Step 7: worked in short advances, cable free-spun past at 41 ft and pulled back unloaded.
  • Step 8: FAILED. Tub filled to the overflow and released, on the order of 30 gallons. The kitchen sink drained, but the basement floor drain burped and stood water for about a minute before clearing. Stop rule taken: the ticket stayed open, the line was not called clear, and the tech went back in rather than packing up.

The second pass found a second restriction: hand-feeding again met resistance at 63 ft, past the first one entirely. Roots came back on the head from that depth, which matched a large tree between the house and the street. After the second clearing, the same tub test released with no rise at the floor drain and no burp, and the line was called clear on the second test rather than the first.

Cause on the ticket: root intrusion at roughly 63 ft, with grease at 38 ft as a secondary. Camera run the same visit confirmed the root entry at a clay joint and put a surface mark on it. Note what the volume test bought: a fixture-only check at the kitchen sink would have passed after the first clearing, and the customer would have flooded the basement on laundry day.
