Drain Cleaning Machine Selection: Sectional, Drum, and Jetter

Why this matters

Pick the wrong drain machine for a job and you either break the cable, break the pipe, or come back the next week because the line is still partly blocked. There is no single "best" machine; each technology covers a defined range of pipe diameters, blockage types, and access conditions. A confident drain tech walks a job, reads the cleanout layout, asks two questions about what is downstream, and picks the right tool before unloading the truck. This reference lays out the tradeoffs by pipe size, blockage type, access, and cost-of-failure so the choice is deterministic rather than habitual.

The three families of machine

Sectional cable machines

Sectional machines drive cable in 7.5-foot or 15-foot interlocking pieces, each fed in by hand and twisted into the next by a coupling. A motor on the machine spins the cable through a chuck. The operator adds and removes sections as the cable advances and retreats.

Strengths:

  • Highest torque-to-weight ratio of any drain machine; a sectional rig will twist through a heavy root mat that bogs a drum
  • Modular: a clog 80 feet down a 4-inch line needs only the sections required, not a 100-foot continuous cable
  • Cables can be quickly inspected piece-by-piece for damage and replaced in the field
  • Easier to navigate down a deep cleanout or a roof vent because the rig stays at the access point and only the sections travel down

Limitations:

  • Requires two hands at the machine to add and remove sections, slower in long runs
  • Operator hand fatigue on day-long jobs is real
  • Not appropriate inside a finished space; the open coupling spins exposed and slings water

Typical pipe range: 3 to 10 inches, with the most common workhorse setup running 5/8-inch or 11/16-inch cable on a 1-1/4 HP motor.

Drum machines

Drum machines coil a single continuous cable (50, 75, 100, or 125 feet) inside a rotating drum. The cable feeds out through a guide tube and the operator advances or retracts it with a feed lever or by hand.

Strengths:

  • Single operator, fully enclosed drum keeps the work area clean
  • Faster setup and breakdown than sectional, especially on short runs
  • Excellent for residential interior service work where dripping cable inside a kitchen is unacceptable
  • Smaller machines (1/4-inch and 5/16-inch cable) reach tub drains and lavatory branches without damage

Limitations:

  • Cable length is fixed at the drum capacity; you cannot extend in the field
  • Less torque per pound than a sectional; heavy root blockages bog the motor
  • Cable inspection requires pulling the entire length out of the drum, often skipped, which is why drum cables fail in service from accumulated kinks the operator never saw

Typical pipe range and cable size:

  • 1/4-inch cable, 1-1/4 to 2-inch pipe: sinks, tubs, lavatories
  • 3/8-inch cable, 2 to 3-inch pipe: kitchen branches, laundry standpipes
  • 1/2-inch cable, 3 to 4-inch pipe: branch sewers, secondary stacks
  • 5/8-inch cable, 3 to 6-inch pipe: main sewer lateral, the K-750 and K-7500 class drum machines. Do not put the K-1500 on this list; it is a sectional machine, not a drum, and it gets named in the same breath often enough that crews order the wrong rig

Hydrojetters

A jetter is a high-pressure pump and a hose with a nozzle. The nozzle sprays rearward (and on some heads, forward) at 1500 to 4000+ psi. Reverse jets pull the hose down the line; forward jets cut blockage at the head. Jet action scours pipe walls clean of grease, scale, and soft debris.

Strengths:

  • The only drain-cleaning method that actually cleans the pipe wall; everything else punches a hole through the clog
  • Effective on grease, scale, soft sediment, paper, hygiene products, and most root mats (though heavy roots usually still want a cable cut first)
  • Long reach: cart and trailer jetters carry 200 to 500 feet of hose
  • No mechanical contact with the pipe wall, so easier on aged or fragile pipe than aggressive cable work

Limitations:

  • Higher capital cost than any cable machine; lower-end electric jetters start above the upper end of full cable rigs
  • Requires a water source on site (some trailer units carry a tank)
  • Cannot break through hard mineral deposits or cast obstructions; cable first to open a path, then jet to clean
  • Operator training matters more than with cable; a runaway hose under pressure can damage the line or injure the operator

Typical use ranges:

  • Cart jetters (1500 to 3000 psi, 4 to 5 GPM): 2 to 4 inch lines, kitchen and laundry mains
  • Trailer jetters (3000 to 4000 psi, 10 to 18 GPM): 4 to 8 inch lines, municipal laterals, commercial mains, restaurant grease

Decision framework

Pick by pipe size first, then by blockage type, then by access.

By pipe size

By blockage type

  • Soft blockage (grease, soap scum, paper, food waste): jetter first. Cable smears grease against the pipe wall and creates a recurring callback in 30 days.
  • Hard blockage (foreign object, full pipe plug): cable to open a hole, then jet to clean if appropriate.
  • Root intrusion: cable with a sharp root-cutting head, multiple passes with progressively larger heads, follow with jetter to flush debris.
  • Scale or mineral buildup: chain knocker (drum or sectional) or descaling chain on a jetter. Standard cable barely scratches scale.
  • Cast-iron pipe with belly or scale: start with a camera, then jet at moderate pressure. Aggressive cable can break the pipe wall once corrosion has thinned it.

By access

  • Indoor cleanout, finished space: drum machine. Sectional cable slings water and grease.
  • Outdoor or basement cleanout, dirty workspace: sectional acceptable, drum still preferred for crew comfort.
  • Roof vent access: sectional only; the modular sections feed down a vent line without a drum sitting on the roof.
  • Long run (over 100 feet): sectional with a long cable inventory, or a trailer jetter with extended hose.

Pre-job camera inspection

The camera does not replace the machine decision, it makes it. Two rules govern when it goes down the line.

Camera before you cable when the pipe material or history is in question: cast iron in a house old enough to have thin walls, a line that has been jetted or cabled repeatedly, a known repair or transition, or any lateral where the customer is already talking about replacement. Ten minutes of picture keeps you from putting a cutter head through a corroded wall and owning an excavation you did not cause.

Camera after you open the line in every other case. A standing full line shows you nothing but water and debris. Cable a hole through it, let it drain, then run the camera to find out what actually caused the stoppage and whether the machine you picked is the right finish tool.

What you are reading for:

  • Roots at joints. Count how many joints and how far apart. One joint is a cutter pass. Every joint down the run is a repair conversation, not a cleaning conversation.
  • Scale and tuberculation in cast iron. Standard cable rides over it. This is a chain knocker or descaling job.
  • Belly. Standing water that does not drain after the line is open. Jetting clears the debris sitting in it, and it will refill. Say that out loud instead of selling a cleaning every six months.
  • Offset or separated joint, crushed pipe, collapsed clay, or deformed fiber conduit. No machine fixes these.
  • Foreign object. Cable can push it further into a smaller line. Retrieval or a different approach.
  • Grease coating with a clean pipe wall underneath. Jetter.

Locate while you are down there. Drop the sonde at the defect and mark depth and position on the surface. A quote for a spot repair with a paint mark and a depth carries weight that a verbal description never will.

Record the run and give the customer a copy with the ticket. That footage is your scope evidence, your upsell, and your defense when someone later claims the line was fine before you touched it.
