Faucet Cartridge and Valve Replacement

Purpose

This procedure produces a faucet that does not drip, whose handles turn the way the customer expects, and whose repair is traceable to a part number the next tech can order without a second site visit. The failure this exists to prevent is the return call where a new cartridge was fitted and the faucet still drips. That is almost never a defective cartridge. It is a scored seat in the body, a set of body o-rings nobody replaced, or a cartridge indexed half a turn out so the stem bottoms before the seal lands. All three are visible in the two minutes after the old cartridge comes out, and all three are invisible afterwards.

Scope

Covers cartridge, stem, ceramic disc and ball-type valve repair on residential and light commercial deck-mounted and wall-mounted faucets: kitchen, lavatory, bar and laundry. Includes body seat assessment, body o-rings, aerator restoration and the temperature limit stop where the faucet carries one.

Does not cover shower and tub valves buried in a finished wall, which are owned by the shower valve replacement SOP because the access decision governs the job. Tub spouts and diverters have their own SOP. A faucet body that is cracked, or whose seat is cut past dressing, is a fixture replacement quoted under the sink and faucet installation standard, not a repair.

Procedure

  1. Reproduce the complaint and locate it before anything opens. Run each handle separately and watch three places: the spout tip, the base of the spout, and the underside of the deck. Acceptance: the leak is attributed to one handle or to the spout base, and recorded as a drip count or a wet ring. Wrong: "it leaks", which fits a cartridge, a body o-ring and a failed deck seal equally. Stop rule: a leak that only appears under the deck goes to the supply connections first, because no cartridge causes it. Hazard: run the hot side into the basin and never over a hand, since a tank set at 140 F burns an adult in about five seconds and a child in about three.

  2. Close both stops and prove isolation, then relieve pressure. Close hot and cold, open the handle fully, and watch. Acceptance: flow stops entirely and the faucet dribbles to nothing within about 30 seconds, then stays dry. Wrong: a thin stream that will not quit, meaning a stop is passing. Stop rule: isolate at the branch or main rather than fighting a passing stop, and add the stop to the scope under the supply stop SOP. Hazard: the handle stays open through the whole job, because a cartridge withdrawn against residual pressure launches, and the retaining clip goes with it toward your face.

  3. Get the handle off without marking the finish. Find the set screw under the index cap or behind the handle, back it out, and pull straight. Acceptance: handle off, finish unmarked, set screw captured in a parts tray rather than the basin. Wrong: prying at the escutcheon with a screwdriver, which leaves a crescent in the finish that the customer sees for the life of the faucet. Stop rule: a handle that will not release gets a handle puller, not more force, because snapping a broach turns a repair into a faucet. Hazard: tools slip toward the basin here, so plug the drain first and keep your free hand off the spout.

  4. Identify the faucet before the cartridge comes out. Read the maker's mark on the escutcheon, spout base or under-deck casting, and record handle count and stem style. Acceptance: a make and a cartridge family recorded, or a photograph clear enough for the counter to identify it. Wrong: guessing from the shape of the stem, which is how a nearly-right cartridge gets forced and cuts the body. Stop rule: no identification and no match on the truck means the old cartridge travels to the counter and the faucet stays apart with the stops closed and the customer told. Hazard: none at this step, it is reading and photography with the water off.

  5. Withdraw the cartridge and record its index. Note the position of the keyway or tab against the body before anything moves, then pull the retaining clip and lift the cartridge straight out. Acceptance: the index position is written down or photographed, and the cartridge comes out without the body twisting. Wrong: rotating the cartridge to break it free, which loses the reference and reverses hot and cold on reassembly. Stop rule: a cartridge locked by mineral gets a cartridge puller sized to that family, not pliers on the stem. Hazard: pulling a seized cartridge takes real force in a confined space, so keep your knuckles clear of the deck edge and expect it to release suddenly.

  6. Read the body seat and the body o-rings, which is the gate. Look into the body under a light and run a gloved fingertip round the seat and the o-ring grooves. Acceptance: the seat is smooth and unbroken and the grooves are clean, with the o-rings pliable rather than flattened or hard. Wrong: a green crust in the grooves, or a seat you can feel a ridge on. Stop rule: light scale is flushed and the o-rings replaced; a seat you can catch a fingernail on is replaced where the body takes a replaceable seat insert, and condemns the faucet to a quoted replacement where the seat is machined into the casting. Determine which before the new cartridge is opened. Hazard: keep the debris in the body rather than blowing it out toward your eyes, and flush it in step 9 instead.

  7. Fit the new cartridge on the recorded index. Lubricate the o-rings with a plumbing-grade silicone grease rated for potable water, seat the cartridge to its stop, and refit the retaining clip fully. Acceptance: the cartridge seats without force, the keyway matches the record from step 5, and the clip is home with both legs visible through the body. Wrong: petroleum grease, which swells the elastomers and produces a stiff handle in a season. Stop rule: a cartridge that will not seat by hand is the wrong part, and it gets exchanged rather than tapped in. Hazard: a partly seated clip is a projectile the moment pressure returns, so confirm both legs by sight and not by feel.

  8. Reassemble the handle and set the temperature limit where the faucet has one. Refit the handle and set screw, then set the rotational limit stop if the faucet carries one. Acceptance: the handle stops against its limits in both directions and the set screw is snug, not driven. Wrong: a handle that spins past its stop, which means the broach is not engaged and the stem is taking the load. Stop rule: pull the handle and re-seat it rather than tightening the set screw harder, which splits a die-cast handle. Hazard: an over-driven set screw shears and leaves a stub in the broach that has to be drilled out, at which point the faucet is scrap.

  9. Re-pressurize slowly, flush the aerator, and verify the close-out. Open the cold stop a quarter turn, then the hot, run both through the open faucet with the aerator removed to flush debris, then refit the aerator. Acceptance: no drip at the spout tip after ten minutes closed, no weep at the spout base through a full swing, hot on the left and cold on the right, a folded paper towel dry at both supply connections, and stops fully open. Wrong: a drip that returns after the faucet sits, which reads as a bad cartridge and is usually the seat from step 6. Stop rule: a drip on the close-out sends you back to the seat, not to a second cartridge. Hazard: reintroducing pressure with the aerator off sends hot water and debris out at head height for a tech under the deck, so open the cold first, stand clear of the spout, and warn anyone at the sink.

The record this produces

Six fields, written before the tech leaves: the leak location and side from step 1, the make and cartridge family from step 4, the part number actually fitted, the body seat condition from step 6 in the tech's own words, whether body o-rings were replaced, and the ten-minute drip result. Photographs of the faucet marking and the old cartridge attach to the job.

They land against the fixture as well as the customer. The tech on a repeat call reads seat condition and knows immediately whether a second cartridge is worth fitting or whether the last visit already found the body cut. The office reads the part number to decide whether a return inside the season is warranty on a part or a new fault. The estimator reads make and cartridge family, because a discontinued family on a well-liked faucet is a conversation to have during a remodel rather than during a leak.

One worked pass, including a failure

Kitchen sink, single-lever faucet, complaint is a slow drip at the spout tip that the customer says got worse after a water main repair in the street.

Step 1 reproduces it: about eight drips a minute with the handle closed, nothing at the spout base, nothing under the deck. Step 2 closes both stops and the faucet dribbles to nothing in roughly 20 seconds and stays dry, so isolation is good. Step 3 takes the handle cleanly after the set screw comes out from behind the lever.

Step 4 reads a maker's mark on the under-deck casting and records a single-lever ceramic disc family, photographed. Step 5 records the keyway at the twelve o'clock position, and the cartridge lifts out after the retaining clip is pulled.

Step 6 fails and takes its stop rule. Under a light the body carries a green crust in both o-ring grooves, and both cartridge-carried inlet seals are flattened hard with a ridge pressed into the sealing face. The gate's first job is deciding which branch applies, so the brass port faces under those seals get read before any new part comes out of its bag: both are smooth with nothing a fingernail catches, so the seat is not cut, the repair branch applies rather than a quoted faucet replacement, and the customer is told what was found before work continues.

Steps 7 and 8 run to acceptance: a new cartridge carrying fresh inlet seals, new body o-rings, silicone grease rated for potable water, cartridge seated by hand with the keyway back at twelve o'clock, both clip legs visible, handle stopping against its limits.

Step 9 runs with the aerator off first, and the flush produces a visible slug of grit, which matches the customer's account of the main repair. Aerator refitted, ten minutes closed, no drip at the tip, no weep at the base through a full swing, hot on the left, dry towel at both supplies.

When the site does not match this procedure

The faucet cannot be identified and the counter cannot match the old cartridge. Reassemble with the old parts if they will hold, or cap the supplies and leave the stops closed, and tell the customer plainly that the sink is out of service until the part lands. Leaving a faucet apart without saying so is how a shop gets a second call the same evening.

The body seat is machined into the casting and is cut. There is no repair, and the article's own gate at step 6 says so. Quote the faucet under the sink and faucet installation standard rather than fitting a second cartridge to prove it.

The customer wants only the cheapest part fitted after step 6 finds worn body o-rings. Fit what they authorize, write the declined items in their own words on the record, and note that the drip test at step 9 may still fail, because it will.
