Outdoor Gas Appliance Connection Standard
Purpose
Outdoors does not change how you thread a joint. It changes which parts are legal, and that decision is made before the truck leaves the shop. An indoor appliance connector on a patio heater, bare black steel rising out of a flower bed, an appliance regulator whose vent faces up under a counter, no drip at the low point of a run that gets rained on: each of those installs cleanly, leak checks clean, and works all summer.
The failure arrives out of season and unwitnessed. A connector jacket that has spent two summers in ultraviolet light cracks, a vent screen packs with insects and then ices over, a stub rots through at the soil line. This procedure guarantees every part was chosen against its own listing rather than against what was on the truck.
Scope
Covers connecting an outdoor gas appliance to an existing residential or small commercial system: grills and outdoor kitchens, patio heaters, fire features, pool heaters, standby generators, at houses, small restaurants and small retail.
It does not cover sizing the piping that feeds it, which the gas line sizing for an added appliance SOP owns and which step 3 hands off to. It does not cover the appliance's own commissioning beyond fuel, which belongs to its manual. It does not cover a line regulator replacement, which the gas pressure regulator replacement SOP owns. It does not cover buried piping or anything upstream of the meter.

Procedure
Read the appliance listing and its clearances before anything is piped. Acceptance: the nameplate states outdoor use, and the manual's clearances to combustibles, to overhead structures and to building openings are recorded with the measured distances at the site. Wrong: an appliance marked for outdoor use only sited under a solid roof with walls on more than the listed number of sides. Stop: an appliance whose listing does not permit its location is not connected, and the reason goes to the customer in writing. Hazard: this is the step that prevents the commonest outdoor carbon monoxide event. An outdoor appliance has no vent because its products are supposed to disperse, so putting one under a roofed and partly walled structure fills a space people sit in, and no amount of correct piping fixes it.
Establish an outdoor shutoff, upstream and reachable. Acceptance: a valve listed for fuel gas, outdoors, upstream of the connector, operable by hand without tools, outside the appliance's heat zone. Wrong: the only shutoff for a pool heater sitting inside the equipment room behind the filter. Stop: no compliant outdoor shutoff means one is added before the appliance is connected, not after. Hazard: siting a valve where a person reaches across a hot appliance to close it turns an emergency shutoff into a burn, so check the position with the appliance's cabinet and lid in their real service positions.
Select exterior piping material and route it so it drains. Acceptance: material the adopted edition of NFPA 54, the National Fuel Gas Code, permits for above-ground exterior use, coated or wrapped where it contacts earth or concrete, with a drip at the low point where the gas can carry moisture. Wrong: bare black steel outdoors, or a run that dips below the appliance with no drip, so winter puts a slug of water where the gas has to pass. Stop: any change to route or size hands off to the gas line sizing for an added appliance SOP before it is cut. Hazard: every cut into existing pipe means the section is isolated at step 2's valve and proved with an indicator first, and threading throws hot chips and oil.
Choose the connector by its own marking, not by what fits. Acceptance: a single listed assembly whose marking names outdoor appliance use, whose published capacity at the installed length exceeds the plate input, and whose length is within the shorter of the adopted code's limit and the connector's own listing; any quick-disconnect is listed and shuts gas off when uncoupled. Wrong: an indoor connector on an outdoor appliance, two joined to reach, or one reused off the appliance you removed. Stop: no conforming connector on the truck means the appliance is not connected today and the stub is capped and leak checked. Hazard: a work-hardened brass flare nut off a reused connector cracks on the second pull-up, which is why reuse is banned rather than discouraged.
Protect the connector and the run from what happens in a yard. Acceptance: no connector crossing a walkway or mowing path, nothing bearing on a sharp cabinet edge, the run visible for its whole length with the appliance in final position, and a gentle loop so it can be pulled for service without stretching. Wrong: a connector run through the back panel of an outdoor cabinet, a concealment a listed connector may not make. Stop: if the geometry demands passing through anything, the stub moves and rigid pipe carries the run. Hazard: your hands go behind and under a heavy appliance here, so block it before reaching and keep the connector clear of any burner or flue surface.
Set the appliance regulator and prove its vent cannot be blocked. Acceptance: the regulator in the orientation its instructions require, the vent pointing down or screened and shielded so insects, water, snow and ice cannot pack it, and the vent's clearance to ignition sources and building openings measured against the adopted edition. Wrong: a vent facing up under a counter where water pools, which reads fine on a dry day and freezes shut in January. Stop: a location that cannot meet the vent orientation is not fixed by drilling a weep hole; the regulator is relocated. Hazard: the vent is the regulator's failure path, and a blocked one lets a ruptured diaphragm put full inlet pressure into an appliance sized for inches of water column.
Reintroduce gas, leak check everything you made, and prove pressure under load. Open the outdoor shutoff a quarter turn, let the line come up, then open fully with a combustible gas indicator in hand and no ignition source at the appliance. Brush and sweep every joint from stub to appliance inlet. Acceptance: no bubble growth over a full minute at any joint, no indicator response above outdoor background, and inlet pressure read static and again with every gas appliance firing, at or above the plate minimum. Wrong: a good static reading that collapses under load, which is piping capacity rather than the connection. Stop: below plate minimum, the appliance is left off and the job goes to the sizing SOP. Hazard: this puts fuel into the open air next to people, so it happens before anything is lit, the manometer tap plug goes back in and is leak checked before the appliance runs unattended, and no flame is ever used as a detector.
Commission the appliance and hand over what the customer has to know about winter. Acceptance: a full cycle watched with stable ignition and no flame lift, a personal carbon monoxide monitor at your breathing zone at background throughout and specifically under any overhead structure, and the customer able to point at the outdoor shutoff and say which way it closes. Wrong: an appliance left running for the customer to admire before the monitor has been under the roofed area. Stop: a rising monitor reading shuts the appliance and reopens step 1's clearance question rather than the burner adjustment. Hazard: the OSHA permissible exposure limit is 50 ppm as an 8 hour time weighted average at 29 CFR 1910.1000 Table Z-1, and a climbing reading means work stops and everyone moves clear, including the customer standing next to you.

One connection record per appliance, filed against the address:
- Appliance make, model, plate input in Btu per hour, and the outdoor-use marking read off the plate
- Measured clearances to combustibles, overhead structure and building openings, against the manual's figures
- Outdoor shutoff type and location, and whether it is reachable without tools
- Exterior piping material, coating at any earth contact, and drip location
- Connector marking, published capacity at the installed length, actual length, and the limit it was judged against
- Regulator model, mounting orientation, vent direction, and its measured clearances
- Leak check result per joint, static and loaded inlet pressure, and the appliances firing
- Carbon monoxide readings, including one taken under any overhead structure
- Anything left unconnected, why, and what the customer was told in writing
Worked pass: an outdoor kitchen with a grill and a side burner on natural gas
- Step 1: grill plate 60,000 Btu per hour, side burner 15,000, both marked outdoor use. Pergola over the counter is open on three sides with a slatted top, inside the manual's allowance. Clearances to the house wall and to the nearest window measured and both clear. Passed.
- Step 2: new 1/2 in valve set on the stub at the end of the counter, hand operable, 4 ft from the grill and outside its heat zone. Passed.
- Step 3: coated steel from the basement wall penetration to the counter, drip at the low point below the counter. Total load 60,000 plus 15,000 is 75,000 Btu per hour, which at 1,030 Btu per cubic foot is 72.8 cubic feet per hour; the sizing SOP was run first and the existing main cleared it.
- Step 4: connector marking read outdoor appliance connector. Published capacity at the installed 3 ft length read 106,000 Btu per hour, clearing the 75,000 demand by 31,000, about 41 percent of demand. Single assembly, no couplings. Passed.
- Step 5: connector visible for its full length with the grill in its cabinet, gentle loop, nothing through a panel. Passed.
- Step 6: FAILED. The appliance regulator supplied with the grill was mounted under the counter with its vent opening facing up, in a spot where the counter cutout drains onto it. It could not be rotated in place because the cutout sits directly above. Stop rule taken: the regulator was relocated to the end of the run outside the cabinet with the vent facing down and screened, which cost about an extra hour and forced a repeat of step 7.
- Step 7: after the relocation, all joints from the stub to the grill inlet showed no bubble growth over a full minute and no indicator response above an outdoor background of 0. Static read 7.1 in wc. With the furnace, the water heater and the grill all firing, the reading was 6.8 in wc against a plate minimum of 5.0 in wc, clearing by 1.8 in wc. Tap plug reinstalled and leak checked.
- Step 8: full cycle on both burners, stable ignition, no flame lift. Monitor held at background at the burner and under the pergola. Customer closed and reopened the outdoor valve unaided.
The instructive part is that step 6 failed on an appliance-supplied part. Nothing was substituted and nothing was wrong with the regulator; it was mounted where its own instructions do not allow, in a cabinet the countertop fabricator built. That is the outdoor pattern in one line: the parts are usually right and the position is usually what fails, because position is the thing nobody checks against a listing.
