PEX vs Copper vs CPVC Reference

Why this reference exists

The decision between PEX, copper, + CPVC for residential water supply is the most common pipe-material question + drives 20-30% of the labor cost on a remodel or whole-house repipe. Every material has tradeoffs. Customer asks: "why are you using PEX?" or "isn't copper better?" - the plumber's answer determines trust + the next sale. This is the working comparison.

Brief history

  • Copper: dominant 1950s-2000s. Soldered + crimped joints. Premium reputation.
  • CPVC: introduced 1960s. Solvent-welded plastic. Hot-water-rated chlorinated PVC.
  • PEX: introduced U.S. 1980s, mainstream 2000+. Cross-linked polyethylene. Crimped or expansion fittings.

Today: PEX dominates new construction (75%+); copper niche for visible exterior + premium; CPVC declining (mostly Florida + Texas regional).

PEX details

Grades:

  • PEX-A (Engel method, peroxide cross-linked): most flexible, highest degree of cross-linking, expansion-style fittings, and the only grade with useful kink memory (heat a kink and it recovers). Wirsbo / Uponor pioneered it.
  • PEX-B (silane method): stiffer, lower cost, crimp-ring fittings. Most plumbing-aisle PEX.
  • PEX-C (radiation method): less common, similar to B.

PEX-A is preferred for radiant + complex routing. PEX-B is fine for general distribution.

Sizes:

  • 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1.25"
  • Color-coded: red (hot), blue (cold), white (combined or generic)
  • Polyethylene jacket; aluminum backing optional (PEX-AL-PEX) for stiffness + oxygen barrier

Joining:

  • Crimp ring: copper ring crimped around fitting + pipe. Tools: an inexpensive crimp tool. Best for PEX-B.
  • Cinch ring (stainless): similar to crimp, smaller tool. Most common DIY.
  • Expansion ring (PEX-A only): pipe expanded with tool, ring slipped on, fitting inserted, pipe contracts around fitting. Specialty tool, a few times the cost of a basic crimp tool. Highest reliability.
  • Push-fit fittings (SharkBite): no special tool. Higher cost per fitting; good for emergency repair + accessible joints.

Routing:

  • Flexible: bends around obstacles
  • Long runs: home-run manifold system possible (each fixture has dedicated line from manifold)
  • Conventional trunk + branch also works

Cautions:

  • UV degradation: don't run outdoors exposed
  • Rodent damage: PEX punctured by rats more readily than copper; protect in attic + crawl
  • Chemical exposure: petroleum products degrade PEX (don't run through plant root zones treated with herbicide)
  • Some pre-2009 PEX had performance issues; current NSF 61 + ASTM F876 + F877 certified products are reliable

Copper details

Types:

  • Type K (heavy wall): underground service, commercial
  • Type L (medium wall): residential supply, most common
  • Type M (thin wall): drainage in some applications; sometimes residential supply but less durable

Sizes:

  • 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1.5"

Joining:

  • Solder (sweat): heat copper, apply flux, melt solder into joint. Skilled. Lead-free solder mandatory in potable water (post-1986).
  • ProPress / MegaPress: press tool (a significant equipment investment) crimps fitting onto pipe. Fast, no flame, no flux. Premium fittings cost more but install is 4-6x faster.
  • Compression: threaded fitting + ferrule. Used at valves + transitions.
  • SharkBite: push-fit; for emergency or limited use.

Routing:

  • Rigid: bend with tool or use elbow fittings
  • Strap to studs/joists; allows for thermal expansion

Cautions:

  • Low pH water (< 6.5) pits copper; install acid neutralizer
  • High velocity (> 8 ft/sec) erodes interior; properly sized
  • Lightning + grounding: copper plumbing was grounding path in older homes
  • Cost has risen significantly since 2010

CPVC details

Schedules:

  • Schedule 40: standard residential
  • CTS (Copper Tube Size): matches copper outside dimensions for transitions

Sizes:

  • 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1.25"

Joining:

  • Solvent weld (cement + primer): chemically fuses pipe + fitting
  • Threaded transitions to metal

Routing:

  • Semi-rigid: must heat to bend (not recommended); use elbows
  • Support every 3-6 ft

Cautions:

  • Brittleness in cold (freeze damage easier than PEX)
  • Some chemicals attack (petroleum, chlorine concentrate); use rated CPVC
  • Outdated regions sometimes prefer; most new construction has moved away

Decision framework

Whole-house new construction:

  • PEX-A or PEX-B for hot + cold supply
  • Reasons: cost, freeze resistance, ease of install, code-acceptable

Whole-house repipe:

  • PEX-A or PEX-B same reasoning
  • Often combined with manifold install for future-easy

Visible plumbing (utility room, exposed):

  • Copper for clean look + premium feel
  • ProPress for speed

Tankless or boiler near-pipe (180°F+ hot water):

  • Copper required for first 18-36" off appliance (PEX rated to 200°F continuous; near-boiler temps can exceed)
  • Then transition to PEX

Underground / through-slab:

  • PEX-A continuous (no joints below) preferred
  • Some jurisdictions require copper

Cold-climate exposed pipe:

  • PEX (better freeze resistance than copper or CPVC)

Service / repair (single line):

  • Match existing material
  • OR transition with appropriate fitting

Common pitfalls

  • Wrong fitting for PEX type: expansion fitting on PEX-B (compression-style) fails
  • Bad crimp: undercrimped leaks; overcrimped damages pipe
  • PEX exposed to UV: degrades over years; runs through attic OK if dark; outdoor exposed = wrap or replace
  • Solder old fitting without cleaning: leaky joint, void warranty
  • CPVC over-tightened: cracks
  • Mixing materials wrong: PEX directly soldered to copper (not allowed)
  • Wrong size: undersized pipe = pressure drop at fixtures

Customer talking points

When recommending PEX:

  1. "PEX is faster + cheaper than copper, with equal or better lifespan in residential use."
  2. "Better freeze resistance - if a line freezes, PEX usually doesn't burst; copper does."
  3. "Less prone to pitting in your water chemistry."
  4. "Insurance + appraisers accept it as code-compliant."

When customer insists on copper:

  1. "Copper is premium + has the longest track record."
  2. "For your scope, copper is $X vs PEX $Y. Same code-compliance."
  3. "Most modern homes use PEX; copper is mostly for premium visible work + specific climate concerns."
  4. "I'll quote both."
