Recurring Clog Investigation and Permanent Fix

Purpose

A shop that clears the same line three times in a year has sold the customer three repairs and delivered none. Worse, it has trained them to believe drains are a subscription, so the day you do find a broken pipe they hear an upsell. This standard converts the repeat call from another clearing into an investigation with a named cause class, a measured defect and a written fix, and it gives the tech authority to stop selling clearings on a line whose evidence says cleaning will never hold. The single decision it exists to force: after the second event on one line, the deliverable is a cause, not a flow.

Scope

Covers the investigation visit on a residential or small-commercial drain that has backed up more than once, from history assembly through a named primary cause and a scoped fix recommendation, on a building drain, building sewer or a repeatedly failing branch.

It does not cover the clearing itself, which the drain cleaning service standard owns, or the jetting and camera work, which have their own standards including defect coding and surface locating. It does not cover the repair or replacement decision once the defect is known; the sewer line repair versus replacement assessment owns that, and this SOP hands off to it. Root findings hand off to the root intrusion treatment and recurrence plan.

The handoff that fails: three tickets on one address, each written by a different tech, each saying only "cleared main, flowing." Nothing in that record says whether the stoppage was in the same place, so the fourth tech starts from zero and the customer pays for the same fifteen minutes of learning four times.

Procedure

  1. Assemble the address history before you touch a cap, and put it on one line each. For every prior event, pull the date, the access used, distance to first resistance, what came back on the cable, and the stated cause. Acceptance: a written timeline with a row per event, or an explicit note naming which fields the old tickets never captured. Stop rule: a history you cannot assemble does not cancel the investigation, but the gap is recorded, because the missing fields are why this line is on its fourth call. Hazard: none at this step, it is desk work done before the truck moves, which is precisely why it gets skipped.

  2. Read the interval, not just the count. Subtract the dates and write the gaps out. A shortening interval points to an accumulating restriction: roots regrowing, scale, a belly filling with solids. A steady interval points to use, seasonal load or a fixed capacity limit. A random interval with different fixture groups each time points to a main. Acceptance: the intervals written in months and one of those three patterns named. Wrong looks like averaging four events into a single frequency, which hides exactly the trend you came to find. Hazard: none, this is arithmetic at the truck.

  3. Reproduce the complaint today, and measure it before you change anything. Run the affected fixtures together and time the drawdown at the slowest one. Acceptance: a baseline recorded as either a reproduced restriction with its time, or a clean drain today with the history retained as the evidence. Stop rule: a line that drains normally today is NOT closed as no fault found, because a line clears itself between events and that is what recurrence means. Hazard: standing wastewater at a floor drain or a surcharged fixture is a contact and splash exposure, so gloves and eye protection go on before you release any volume.

  4. Camera the line before any cable goes back in it. On a repeat line the deposit and the wall condition ARE the evidence, and a cable erases them. Acceptance: a recorded run from the access to the connection point or to a hard stop, with footage marks called out loud on the recording. Stop rule: if the camera will not pass, do not force it and do not switch to a cutter to make room; record the stop distance and route to the camera SOP's second-access procedure. Hazard: pulling a camera head back through a wet line drags aerosolised sewage to the opening, so keep your face off the axis of the cleanout, and hands are washed before anything is eaten or touched.

  5. Sort what you see into one of four cause classes, and say which. Structural (a break, an offset joint, a crushed section, a belly), intrusion (roots at a joint or a tap), deposit (grease, scale, soap and hair), or capacity and use (undersized, back-pitched, or a fixture group asked to pass what it cannot). Acceptance: one class named as primary with the footage it sits at, and any secondary class named separately. Wrong looks like listing all four, which is how a report reads as thorough and decides nothing. Hazard: none at this step, it is a call made watching a screen.

  6. Measure standing water rather than describing it. Where the camera shows water at rest, note the depth against the pipe wall and the length of the pooled run. Shop gate: standing water deeper than 1/2 in, or any pooled run longer than 5 ft, is a recorded belly and a structural finding. Acceptance: depth in inches and length in feet written down, or an explicit note that the line ran dry at rest. Stop rule: a line failing this gate is not sold another cleaning interval, because water at rest holds solids between uses and no cleaning changes the slope. Hazard: none, this is a reading taken off the monitor.

  7. Test the vent contribution before you blame the drain. Gurgle at a nearby fixture, a trap that empties between uses, or slow drainage that improves when another fixture is opened are vent symptoms, not stoppage symptoms. Acceptance: the affected fixture discharged full-bore with the trap seal checked after, and the result recorded as vent-suspect or vent-clear. Stop rule: a vent-suspect result routes to the vent system inspection and correction SOP rather than to a bigger cable. Hazard: nothing on a roof at this step, the test is run from inside; the roof work belongs to the vent SOP with its own fall protection.

  8. Correlate today's footage against the prior events' distances. Repeated resistance within a couple of feet of the same footage across events is a fixed defect. Distances scattered across the run are a deposit or a use pattern. Acceptance: today's defect footage written beside each prior event's recorded distance, and one of those two conclusions stated. Wrong looks like a defect reported without reference to the history, which is the whole reason this visit exists. Hazard: none at this step, it is comparison work.

  9. Name the fix class and hand it off with the evidence attached. Spot repair, lining, replacement, slope correction, vent correction, or a documented use change are the outcomes; pick one and say what it addresses and what it does not. Acceptance: the fix class written on the ticket with the defect footage, the depth or the intrusion it addresses, and the camera file attached. Stop rule: where the primary cause is structural, this ticket does not close with a cleaning recommendation attached as an alternative, because that reads to the customer as an equally good option. Hazard: none, but the wording is a commitment the lead will have to stand behind.

  10. Close the access you opened and prove it holds before you leave. Reinstall the cleanout plug or cap with the thread sealant or gasket it takes, torque by hand feel to seated and no further on plastic, then run water past it and check the joint dry with a paper towel. Acceptance: plug seated, no seep on the towel, and the customer shown where the access is. Stop rule: a plug that will not seat is not left finger-tight; the cleanout repair is quoted and the customer told plainly that it will pass sewage into the building when the line surcharges. Hazard: this is the step that puts the drainage system back into service under the house, so nobody is under an open cleanout when the test volume is released, and any interior cap gets its dry-towel check before the crew leaves the room.

The record this produces

One investigation record per address, on the property record rather than the ticket, so the pattern survives staff turnover:

  • The event timeline: date, access, distance to resistance, what came back, stated cause, one row each
  • The intervals in months and the pattern named: shortening, steady or random
  • Today's baseline: reproduced or not, with the drawdown time
  • Camera run reference, defect footage, and the primary cause class with any secondary
  • Standing-water depth and pooled length, or a note that the line ran dry at rest
  • Vent test result, vent-suspect or vent-clear
  • Fix class recommended, what it addresses, and the customer's answer in their words
  • Where declined: the interim interval and the decision date

The lead quotes off the defect footage and the depth. The next tech reads the pattern line first and does not re-derive it.

Worked pass: kitchen and laundry backing up, fourth call in 14 months

  • Step 1: four events assembled. Three prior tickets, one of which never recorded a distance, and that gap is noted on the record.
  • Step 2: events at 14 months ago, 8 months ago, 3 months ago and today. 14 minus 8 is 6 months, 8 minus 3 is 5 months, 3 minus 0 is 3 months. The interval is shortening, which reads as an accumulating restriction rather than a use habit.
  • Step 3: reproduced. Laundry and kitchen run together, drawdown at the laundry standpipe timed at 4 minutes for a load discharge that should clear in well under one.
  • Step 4: camera run from the exterior cleanout to the property line, footage called on the recording.
  • Step 5: primary class structural, secondary deposit. Grease coating from 30 ft onward, and the wall condition changes at 36 ft.
  • Step 6: FAILED the gate. Standing water measured 1.25 in deep against the pipe wall, pooled from 36 ft to 44 ft, so 44 minus 36 is an 8 ft run. Against the shop gate of 1/2 in depth or 5 ft length, this fails on both: 1.25 in is 2.5 times the depth gate, and 8 ft is 1.6 times the length gate. Stop rule taken: no cleaning interval was offered, and the cause was written as a belly rather than as grease.
  • Step 7: vent-clear. The laundry trap held its seal after a full discharge and no gurgle was heard at the adjacent fixture, so the slow drain is not a vent fault.
  • Step 8: prior recorded distances were 38 ft and 39 ft, one blank. Today's defect sits at 36 ft to 44 ft, which contains both, so this is a fixed defect and not a wandering deposit.
  • Step 9: fix class recorded as slope correction over the pooled section, which addresses the belly and the deposit that collects in it, and does not address the grease loading upstream of 30 ft. Camera file attached, handed to the lead the same visit.
  • Step 10: cleanout plug reinstalled and seated, test volume released with nobody under the opening, towel came back dry at the joint, customer walked to the cleanout and shown it.

What the measurement bought: the three prior tickets all recorded a successful clearing, and every one of them was true. The line ran after each. The 1.25 in of standing water is why it stopped running again, and it is the only number in the file that a cable was never going to change.
