Sink and Faucet Installation Standard
Purpose
Every joint on this job is easy to reach for about twenty minutes and then it is not. Once the sink is dropped in and the cabinet is loaded back up with the customer's cleaning supplies, a slip joint that seeps under a full basin is found by a swollen cabinet floor three weeks later. So the order of work is the standard, not a preference: build what you can on the bench, prove the drain under a full bowl of water before anything goes back into the cabinet, and take the two measurements (deck thickness and trap seal) that decide whether the assembly is even legal.
Scope
Covers removal and installation of kitchen, bar, laundry and lavatory sinks with their faucets, strainers, traps and supply connections, residential and light commercial, drop-in and undermount, including the dishwasher drain connection where one exists.
Does not cover moving the drain or vent, which is inspected alteration work owned by the rough-in readiness SOP, disposal replacement, or repair of a faucet that is staying. Countertop cutting and stone drilling are a fabricator's work, and this procedure stops rather than improvising them.

Procedure
Check the fixture against the deck before the box is opened. Measure the deck thickness including any substrate, count the holes and their center spacing, and read the faucet's maximum deck thickness and required hole size off its specification sheet. Acceptance: hole count and spread match the faucet, and measured deck thickness falls at or under the sheet's maximum. Wrong: opening a box and finding the mismatch with the old sink already out. Stop rule: a mismatch stops here and goes to the lead for an extension kit, a different faucet or a fabricator, and the old sink stays in service. Hazard: none, it is measuring and reading a sheet with the water still on.
Isolate the water, kill the disposal circuit, and clear the cabinet. Close both stops, open the faucet, then open and lock the disposal branch circuit and unplug the unit. Acceptance: the faucet dribbles to nothing within about 30 seconds and stays dry, the circuit proved on a known live source before and after per NFPA 70E-2021, 120.5 with work practices at 29 CFR 1910.333(b)(2), cabinet empty. Wrong: leaving the disposal plugged in because you are only touching plumbing. Stop rule: a stop that will not hold sends the job to the supply stop SOP first. Hazard: a disposal under a sink is a water plus electricity location, so it is unplugged and its circuit opened before a hand goes near the flange.
Take the old sink out and read what is under it. Cut the sealant bead, break the clips or brackets, lift the sink, then inspect the deck edge, the cabinet floor and the drain stub. Acceptance: a written condition note on deck edge, cabinet floor and stub, plus a photograph of the bare cutout. Wrong: setting a new sink on a swollen particleboard edge that will not hold a clip. Stop rule: soft deck or soft cabinet floor is a carpentry finding, quoted separately, not sealed over. Hazard: a cast iron or stone sink is a two-person lift with a strap, and if it drops the cabinet face goes with it.
Build the sink on the bench with the sealant that deck material actually takes. Fit faucet, sprayer, strainer or disposal flange and tailpiece while the sink is upside down on a padded surface. Acceptance: every fitting made up to the maker's instruction, and the flange bedded in plumber's putty on stainless or enameled steel, or neutral-cure silicone on natural stone, quartz and most composites, because putty stains porous material. Wrong: putty under a stone-composite flange, a dark halo that never comes out. Stop rule: unclear deck material means silicone, the reversible choice. Hazard: cut sink edges and the strainer crown open a hand, so gloves to handle it and never a bare palm inside the cutout.
Set the sink and secure it to the countertop the way that top demands. Drop-in sinks bed on a continuous sealant bead and clip down; undermount sinks land on clips or a rail system already bonded to the stone. Acceptance: the rim flat with no daylight around it, no movement under hand pressure at any corner, sealant bead continuous. Wrong: an undermount hung off silicone alone, which lets go once a full bowl loads it. Stop rule: an undermount with no sound bonded support is a fabricator call, not a plumbing improvisation. Hazard: never drill a stone or quartz deck dry, since cutting or drilling engineered stone releases respirable crystalline silica; that work is wet-cut by the fabricator under the Table 1 controls in 29 CFR 1926.1153.
Make the drain assembly and measure the trap seal. Build the tailpiece, trap and trap arm, cutting to length rather than stacking extensions, and slope the trap arm toward the stub. Acceptance: a measured trap seal between the 2 in minimum and 4 in maximum the IPC sets at Section 1002 in your adopted edition, a trap arm falling about 1/4 in per foot, every slip nut hand-tight plus a quarter turn on a fresh washer. Wrong: a flexible corrugated trap, not smooth-bore, not approved in either model code, and the first thing an inspector points at. Stop rule: a stub too high to give 1/4 in per foot is a drain relocation and stops here. Hazard: solvent cement is a flammable vapor in a closed cabinet, so open the doors, keep the tin off the cabinet floor, and follow the SDS.
Restore water and power, then prove the protection you disturbed. Open the cold stop a quarter turn, then the hot, then close the disposal circuit and plug the unit in. Acceptance: no weep at either supply connection under a dry paper towel at five minutes, the receptacle serving the disposal passing test-and-reset on its ground-fault protection, and the disposal running and stopping on its switch. Wrong: energizing before the supplies are checked, so the first thing the circuit sees is a wet cabinet floor. Stop rule: ground-fault protection that will not trip on test is a finding for an electrician, and the disposal stays unplugged. Hazard: this step puts water and electricity back under one cabinet, so restore water first, dry everything, and only then close the breaker.
Run the volume drain test and the air gap check. Fill every bowl to the rim, release them all at once, and watch each joint for a full minute; then measure from the faucet outlet down to the flood level rim. Acceptance: no seepage at any slip joint, tailpiece or dishwasher connection under full-bowl volume, and an air gap at or above the value the adopted code's air gap table gives for that outlet, which the table sets by the effective opening and whether the outlet sits close to a wall. Wrong: a trickle test, which loads none of the joints and passes assemblies that fail on the first sink of dishes. Stop rule: any seepage means the joint comes apart and the washer is replaced, not tightened. Hazard: a full double bowl released at once loads a fresh assembly hard, so keep your face clear of the trap and hands off the joints while it drains.
The record this produces
Seven fields, written before the tech leaves: deck thickness and the faucet's stated maximum from step 1, the condition note and bare-cutout photograph from step 3, the sealant used at the flange and why, the measured trap seal from step 6, the ground-fault test result from step 7, the volume drain test result, and the measured air gap. A photograph of the empty cabinet with dry joints attaches to the job.
Deck thickness and the sealant note are the two read again. A shop holding 1 5/8 in of granite plus substrate does not re-measure when the faucet changes in four years, and one that recorded silicone at the flange knows why the next tech should not reach for putty. The volume test result and the empty-cabinet photograph do a different job: a dated statement of how the cabinet was left, which is what you want on file the first time a customer reports a swollen shelf.
One worked pass, including a failure
Kitchen replacement, granite deck on plywood substrate, double-bowl stainless drop-in, customer-supplied single-hole faucet, existing disposal being reused.
Step 1 fails. The deck measures 1 5/8 in through the granite and substrate together, and the faucet's specification sheet gives a maximum deck thickness of 1 3/8 in, read off that sheet. At 1 5/8 minus 1 3/8 the shank is 1/4 in short of reaching, so the stop rule applies and the old sink stays in service while the lead is called. The maker lists a shank extension kit rated to a 2 in maximum deck, and 1 5/8 in falls inside that, so the kit is fetched and the job resumes rather than a second faucet being sold.
Step 2 closes both stops, the faucet dribbles to nothing in about 25 seconds and stays dry, and the disposal circuit is opened, locked and proved before and after on a known live source. Step 3 lifts the old sink two-handed: deck edge sound, cabinet floor dry, photographed.
Step 4 builds on the bench. Deck is granite, so the strainer and disposal flange bed in neutral-cure silicone rather than putty. Step 5 sets the sink on a continuous bead with clips down, rim flat with no daylight, no movement at any corner.
Step 6 cuts the tailpiece and trap arm to length. Trap seal measures 2 3/4 in, inside the 2 in to 4 in range, and the trap arm falls about 1/4 in per foot to the stub.
Step 7 restores water first: both supply connections read dry under a paper towel at five minutes. The circuit is then closed, the receptacle's ground-fault protection trips on test and resets, and the disposal runs and stops on its switch.
Step 8 fills both bowls to the rim and releases them together. Every slip joint, the tailpiece and the dishwasher connection stay dry through a full minute, and the air gap from the faucet outlet to the flood level rim measures 2 1/4 in, above the value the adopted table gives for this outlet away from a wall. When the site does not match this procedure
The faucet is customer-supplied and carries no certification mark. Stop before it is fitted and route it through the customer-supplied fixture acceptance SOP, because an unmarked fitting can be rejected at a final inspection and the labor to pull it out is yours.
The existing stub sits too high for 1/4 in per foot on the trap arm. That is a drain relocation, an inspected alteration in most jurisdictions, and it goes back to the office as a permitted scope. Do not steepen the tailpiece or fit a flexible trap to make the geometry work; both fail on sight.
The customer wants the cabinet reloaded before they get home. Say that the joints are proved with the cabinet empty and the photograph is what protects them, and leave the contents stacked on the counter with a note rather than stacked over a fresh assembly.
