Toilet Blockage Clearing and Auger Use

Purpose

A stopped toilet is the cheapest call on the board and it produces two of the most expensive outcomes in residential plumbing. The first is a cracked bowl or a ring of scratches through the glaze, caused by the wrong tool going into vitreous china, and the shop eats a fixture plus the labor to set it. The second is the tech who augers a bowl that was never the problem and leaves a customer whose main is still restricted. This standard forces one decision before the tool comes off the truck - is the obstruction inside the fixture or downstream of it - then proves the fixture with volume rather than one hopeful flush.

Scope

Covers a stopped or sluggish gravity-flush water closet in a house, an office, a small retail space or a multifamily unit, from arrival through a verified flush test and a written cause, including pulling and resetting the bowl.

It does not cover clearing beyond the closet flange (the drain cleaning service standard) or camera work (the sewer camera SOP). A toilet that runs or fills slowly belongs to the running toilet diagnosis and repair SOP; flushometers to the flushometer rebuild SOP. Sewage already on finished floor is a containment event first, led by the sewage backup response and restoration handoff SOP.

The handoff that fails: a tech augers the toilet, it flushes, the ticket says "cleared toilet," and nobody wrote that the tub was also standing full. The next call arrives as a new complaint at full price.

Procedure

  1. Look at the floor and the receptacles before you look at the toilet. If water has reached a plugged-in appliance, a floor outlet, a cord or a heated or bidet seat, nobody stands in it: unplug from a dry position if the cord is dry and reachable, otherwise kill the circuit at the panel. Acceptance: no energized cord or device in standing water, boots on dry material. Stop rule: if nobody on site is qualified under 29 CFR 1910.333(b)(2), the work waits for an electrician. Hazard: water plus energized equipment is the only thing on this call that kills anyone.

  2. Close the angle stop before you touch the handle. A bowl near the rim overflows on the next flush, and the customer will flush it while you fetch tools. Acceptance: stop closed, bowl level recorded in inches below the rim, customer told out loud not to flush. Stop rule: a stop that will not close means the supply is shut at the branch first. Hazard: a corroded stop can break at the stem and put line pressure into the room, so work it back a quarter turn rather than forcing it.

  3. Read the fixture pattern before any tool enters the china. Fill a nearby tub or laundry sink and release it, and run a second fixture group. Acceptance: the pattern written as fixture-only (no level change anywhere else) or downstream (a second group slow, a floor drain burping, the tub rising when the toilet flushes). Stop rule: a downstream pattern ends this procedure here and routes to the drain cleaning service standard. Hazard: releasing a tub into a restricted line can surcharge a floor drain, so gloves and eye protection first, nobody barefoot on that floor.

  4. Ask the chemical question and dress for the answer. Opener poured into a bowl is still there, concentrated, under water you are about to agitate. Acceptance: the answer recorded verbatim, and where it is yes or unknown, face shield and chemical-resistant gauntlets on with the bowl diluted by several volumes of clear water first. Stop rule: an unlabeled container means nothing enters until the product is identified and its safety data sheet read. Hazard: alkaline opener burns deeper without early pain, so a splash is flushed for the duration the SDS states, not until it stops stinging.

  5. Bail to working level, set containment, and use a closet auger with an intact bowl guard. Water down to roughly the lower third, drop cloths and a catch bucket at the base. The guard sleeve keeps steel off the glaze, so a drum cable, a hanger or bare cable does not go in. Acceptance: containment down, gloves and goggles on, vinyl guard unsplit. Stop rule: a damaged guard is retired to the truck and the job waits for a sound tool. Hazard: china fractures rather than dents, so a bowl that takes a hard strike can fail later under a seated adult.

  6. Advance under hand pressure and feel the difference between the weir and the obstruction. The trapway's curve gives firm, smooth resistance that eases as the head rounds it; an obstruction packs softly or stops hard. Acceptance: the head reaching full reach, with the distance and character of any resistance written down. Stop rule: a hard stop that survives two working attempts ends the augering and goes to step 8, because forcing it drives a recoverable object into the closet bend. Hazard: the cable springs back when it releases, so keep your face out of the plane of the bowl and both hands on the tool.

  7. Retrieve slowly and read what came back. Paper and waste is a routine load; wipes are a use problem the customer needs told about; a hard object means something got in; rough deposit means an old bowl that will keep doing this. Acceptance: the cause named in plain words, any object bagged and shown to the customer. Stop rule: a ticket reading "cleared" with no cause does not close. Hazard: a withdrawing cable carries aerosolised sewage to the opening, so retrieve slow and low in the bowl with your face off the axis.

  8. When the auger's reach is spent, decide pull-or-downstream on evidence, not effort. Two facts settle it: whether a pail poured in at speed goes away, and whether the other fixtures are still clear. Acceptance: a written decision of fixture-obstruction (pull the bowl) or downstream (route to branch access), with that evidence beside it. Stop rule: never keep flushing to test a line you suspect is restricted, because every flush adds volume downstream. Hazard: lifting a toilet is an awkward floor-level load, so break the tank off a two-piece first and set it on cardboard, never a tub rim.

  9. With the bowl up, plug the flange and work from the outlet end. Lay the bowl on its side and light the trapway from the horn; an object lodged near the outlet is usually visible and reachable from that end. Acceptance: trapway clear by sight from both ends, and a plug in the flange the whole time the bowl is off. Stop rule: a bowl cracked at the trapway is condemned, not re-set. Hazard: an open flange is a drainage opening breathing sewer gas into an occupied room, so it stays plugged except at the moment the bowl is set.

  10. Reset the fixture, restore water, and prove the seal that keeps sewage out of the floor. New bowl seal and closet bolts, bowl set with steady downward pressure, nuts brought up alternately in small increments until the bowl bears on the floor rather than on the bolts, then the stop opened slowly and a paper towel run around base and stop after three flushes. Acceptance: no rock under a hand test, towel dry at base and stop. Stop rule: a bowl that still rocks is shimmed, not tightened further, and a flange below finished floor gets an extender rather than stacked seals. Hazard: this step puts pressure and the drainage seal back into service under an occupied room, so nobody is on the floor below an untested joint, and the towel check verifies the barrier you disturbed still works.

  11. Prove the toilet with volume, not with one clean flush. Flush five consecutive times with the tank refilling fully between, then run a bulk test with a wad of tissue sized to realistic use. Acceptance: every flush clearing with the level returning to normal, and the bulk test gone in one flush with no rise. Stop rule: any rise on any flush keeps the ticket open and returns to step 8, because a first flush that clears while the third climbs means the obstruction was opened rather than removed. Hazard: splash only here, which the containment covers, so leave it down until the sequence finishes.

When the site does not match this procedure

A pressure-assist toilet. It carries a charged vessel inside the tank and is not a gravity fixture. Clear the trapway as above, do not open the vessel, and route a flush-performance fault to the manufacturer's service instructions.

The customer refuses the pull. Record the decision in their words, tell them plainly the fixture will stop again, and do not part-clear a toilet and call it cleared.

An object with real or sentimental value. The lead owns it. Recovery from the trapway is likely, from the closet bend usually not, and pulling to look is a scope the customer agrees to first.

A bowl already cracked on arrival, or one fixture in a multifamily stack that is backing up. Photograph the crack with a time stamp before any tool goes in, because an undocumented hairline becomes your crack the moment you leave. A whole stack backing up is a shared-riser event, and that SOP owns the sequence.

The lead reads three fixture-only stoppages on one bowl in a year and starts a low-performing-fixture conversation instead of selling a fourth clearing.

Worked pass: single-family bath, no other fixtures affected

Intake: one toilet backing up since morning, no chemical opener, nothing knowingly dropped in, no water on the floor.

  • Steps 1 to 3: floor dry, no cord in water; stop closed with the bowl about 4 in below the rim; tub filled and released and the kitchen run, with no level change anywhere, so the fixture-only pattern was written down.
  • Steps 4 to 6: answer was "no, we just plunged it," so goggles and gloves and no face shield; bailed to the lower third, guard intact; firm smooth resistance at the weir, then a soft packing stop just past it, and two working advances put the head through.
  • Step 7: paper and waste on the head, no object, no deposit. Cause provisionally recorded as a paper load stoppage.
  • Step 11: FAILED. Flush one cleared. Flush two cleared. On flush three the level climbed to roughly 2 in below the rim before falling, and the acceptance fails on any rise on any flush. Stop rule taken: the ticket stayed open and the tech returned to step 8 rather than closing on two good flushes.

Step 8 re-run: a full pail poured in at speed backed up rather than going away, while tub and lavatory stayed clear. That combination is a fixture obstruction, so the written decision was pull the bowl.

Step 9: bowl pulled, flange plugged, and a hard plastic measuring scoop was visible from the outlet end, wedged across the trapway just past the weir. The auger head had been passing alongside it, which is why flushes one and two looked clean: water got around the scoop and paper did not.

Steps 10 and 11 re-run: new seal and bolts, no rock, towel dry at base and stop after three flushes; then five consecutive flushes all clearing with a normal return level and no rise, and the bulk tissue test gone in one flush. A single-flush check after step 7 would have passed, and the household would have repacked the trapway against that scoop by evening.
