Water Conservation Tips for Homeowners
Overview
Customer-facing reference for the conservation conversation that often comes up during service calls. Customers asking "what can I do to lower my water bill" should hear specific, ROI-positive answers - not vague green-talk. This reference is the script for that conversation.
Quick wins (low cost, immediate savings)
Faucet aerators - A worn aerator passes 4 - 5 gpm; a low-flow aerator passes 1.5 gpm. Cheap part, 5-minute install per aerator. Saves ~5,000 gallons / year per faucet on heavy-use lavatories or kitchen sinks.
Showerheads - Pre-1994 showerheads can flow 6 - 8 gpm; heads made from 1994 on are capped at 2.5 gpm by federal standard; modern WaterSense models flow 2.0 gpm or less. Inexpensive part, no special tools. Saves 12,000 - 20,000 gallons / year for a 2-shower household.
Toilet flush valves - Old toilets use 3.5 - 6 gallons per flush; modern 1.6 gpf or 1.28 gpf high-efficiency. Replacement payback is 3 - 7 years vs continuing the old toilet. Most customers don't realize the toilet is the single largest category of indoor water use in a typical home.

Whole-home water-pressure regulator - Static pressure above 80 psi pushes water out through every leak and drip in the house, and code requires a regulator above that point anyway; setting a PRV to 60 - 65 psi cuts flow at every fixture. Especially beneficial in older homes with marginal supply lines.
Greywater system - Routes shower + laundry water to landscape irrigation. Significant code + plumbing changes; ROI depends on local water cost.
Rainwater harvesting - Cistern + gutter capture for landscape irrigation. Storage + distribution cost varies; high upfront, long payback.
Smart irrigation controllers - For customers with sprinkler systems, smart controllers using weather data reduce outdoor water 30 - 50 %. Often the customer's biggest indoor + outdoor water bill is from over-watered lawn.
Behavioral changes (free, customer's choice)
- Don't run water continuously while brushing teeth - 1.5 gallons / minute saved
- Full loads only on dishwasher + washing machine - bigger savings on washer than dishwasher
- Shower duration awareness - 5-minute shower saves 12.5 gallons vs 10-minute, with low-flow head
- Pre-rinse plates only when truly needed; modern dishwashers handle "scraped" plates fine
