Filter Cleaning and Media Replacement

Purpose

A pool filter is a pressure vessel, and the clamp band or lock ring that holds its lid is the only thing between the technician's face and the stored energy inside it. Lids have separated during restart and killed people, which is why the pressure relief comes before the tool. This procedure also fixes the second failure, which is quieter: cleaning on a calendar instead of on a measured pressure rise either burns labor on a clean element or starves the heater, the cleaner and the spa jets of flow for weeks while the gauge climbs unread. Both are prevented by one number that gets written down after every cleaning.

Scope

Covers cartridge, diatomaceous earth grid, and sand filters on residential and light commercial systems: deciding when to clean, opening the tank, cleaning, inspecting, replacing media, reassembling, restarting, and recording a new clean baseline.

It does not cover pump or motor replacement, heater service, or salt cell cleaning, each of which has its own SOP, and it does not set acid dilution ratios, which the muriatic acid SOP owns. Backwash and slurry discharge is subject to your local wastewater rule and is named here only as a step, not resolved.

When to clean, and when the element is finished

Clean pressure baseline is the gauge reading taken with the pump primed and running immediately after a cleaning, with the air fully purged. Everything else is measured against it.

  • Clean when the gauge sits 8 to 10 psi above the recorded clean baseline, or sooner if flow-driven equipment complains first. A heater that trips its flow switch, a suction cleaner that stalls, or a spa spillway that thins out are all flow symptoms and they can arrive before the pressure rule does on an undersized system.
  • A gauge that never rises is a finding, not good news. Media passing to the pool through a torn grid, a split cartridge seam, or a broken lateral lets water through without resistance, so pressure stays low while the pool gets dirtier. Sand or DE returning to the pool floor points here.
  • An element that will not come back within about 2 psi of its recorded clean baseline after a full clean is finished. That is the end-of-life test, and it beats age, because a route pool with heavy sunscreen loading kills cartridges faster than a lightly used one.

Replace cartridges as a complete set. A new element beside three tired ones takes a disproportionate share of the flow, loads early, and drags the whole set's interval down.

Procedure

  1. Shut the pump off at the disconnect, then open the air relief and hold it open until the tank stops discharging. If a heater is running, shut it down first and let the pump complete the manufacturer's cooldown. Accept when the relief vents to a steady dribble or nothing and the pressure gauge reads zero with the relief still open. Wrong is a gauge reading zero with a stuck relief, which reads the same as a vented tank and is not one. Never loosen a clamp band, lock ring or lid on a tank showing pressure, and never trust the gauge alone: the open relief is the proof.

  2. Isolate the tank and drain it. Close suction and return valves where fitted, open the tank drain plug, and let it empty. Accept when the drain runs dry and the tank sounds hollow when tapped. Wrong is opening a full tank, which drops the weight of the water onto the element and onto your hands. Keep the drain plug and its o-ring together in one place; a plug reinstalled without its o-ring is the commonest air leak on restart and it will look like a pump problem.

  3. Open the band or lock ring standing to the side of the tank, never over it. Back the band nut off in stages and listen. Accept when the band comes free with no movement of the lid. Wrong is a lid that lifts or hisses as the band loosens, which means pressure remains: stop, reseat the band, and vent again. A dry-rotted band or a cracked lock ring gets replaced before the tank is reassembled, not noted for later.

  4. Remove the elements and inspect each one before cleaning it, in daylight. Look for torn fabric, separated end caps, collapsed pleats, split grid seams, and a cracked manifold or standpipe. Accept when every element is intact and the internal parts show no cracks. Wrong is a torn element reinstalled because the replacement is not on the truck. Stop rule: a torn or separated element does not go back in. Bypass filtration for a day is better than pumping media into the pool and into the heater.

  5. Rinse from the top down at low pressure, and degrease before any acid soak. A hose nozzle spread wide, worked into each pleat or across each grid, top to bottom so debris does not wash back in. Accept when the fabric returns to its original colour with no visible band of grey at the base. Wrong is a pressure washer, which drives fibres apart and shortens element life invisibly. Where scale is the problem, the degreasing soak comes first and the acid soak second: acid poured onto an oil-loaded element sets the oils into the fabric permanently.

  6. On a sand filter, backwash to a clear sight glass, then check the media itself. Backwash until the glass runs clear, rinse, and return the valve to filter. Accept when the sand pours loose and gritty from a sample scoop and does not hold a shape when squeezed. Wrong is sand that clumps or comes up as pea-sized balls, which means it needs replacing along with an inspection of the laterals underneath. Discharge goes to the point your local wastewater authority permits, never to a storm drain or a neighbouring property.

  7. Inspect and lubricate every o-ring with silicone, never petroleum, and reassemble to the manufacturer's clamp specification. Replace any o-ring that is flattened, nicked or set into a permanent oval. Accept when the band seats fully with even gap all the way round. Wrong is a band pulled tight to stop a leak, which distorts the flange and makes the leak permanent. Petroleum jelly swells and destroys most pool o-rings, so it does not travel on the truck.

  8. On a DE filter, recharge the tank with the manufacturer's stated quantity for that square footage, poured wet into the skimmer with the pump running. Accept when the full charge has been drawn down and the return water is clear. Wrong is dry-dumping powder at the skimmer or eyeballing the amount: pool-grade diatomaceous earth is calcined and carries respirable crystalline silica, an inhalation carcinogen covered for general industry by 29 CFR 1910.1053, so it is pre-slurried in a bucket of water and any respirator used is worn under a written program per 29 CFR 1910.134. Under-charging leaves grids to blind off; over-charging raises the baseline for the whole season.

  9. Restart with the relief open, purge to solid water, then read and record the new clean baseline. Prime, start, and leave the relief open until water runs without air. Accept when the relief passes solid water, the returns move, and you have a stable gauge reading written on the equipment tag and the ticket. Wrong is a restart with the relief closed, which is the exact condition under which a lid separates. If the new baseline sits more than about 2 psi above the previous one, the element is at end of life and gets quoted, not left to next month.

The record this produces

One filter line per service on the ticket, and a written baseline on the equipment tag at the pad.

  • Gauge reading on arrival and the baseline it was compared against, so the differential is visible rather than inferred.
  • Element condition per element: intact, cleaned, or replaced, with the specific defect named.
  • Media added or replaced, with quantity for DE and grade for sand.
  • New clean baseline and the date, written in both places.
  • Exceptions: a torn element left out of service, a deferred replacement the customer declined, a discharge point used.

The next technician sizes the whole visit off the baseline line, which is why it is written on the tag as well as in the system. The shop lead reads the interval between cleanings across a route: an interval that has halved in a season means either bather load has changed or the elements are near end of life, and the second is a quote rather than a mystery. A declined replacement recorded with its two pressure numbers is also the shop's answer when the same customer calls about a heater tripping in August.

One cleaning, filled in

A 20,000 gallon pool on an eight-hour turnover, four-element cartridge filter. Clean baseline recorded in April: 12 psi. Customer reports the heater cycling off after a few minutes, which is a flow symptom.

Arrival gauge: 21 psi, which is 9 psi over baseline and inside the 8 to 10 psi cleaning window. Step 1: pump off at the disconnect, relief opened, tank discharged to nothing, gauge at zero with the relief still open. Step 2: drained, plug and o-ring set aside together. Step 3: band backed off in stages from the side, no lid movement.

Step 4 fails. Three elements are grey but sound. The fourth has a separated end cap and a section of collapsed pleats. The stop rule is that a separated element does not go back in, and the set rule is that cartridges are replaced as a matched set, so the technician calls the shop lead rather than reassembling three good elements and a fourth with a gap in it. No matched set on the truck. The pool runs on three elements and reduced runtime for one day with the customer informed, and the set is fitted the following morning.

The old set is worth re-checking against the end-of-life test before it is thrown away, because it explains the call. Cleaned and refitted temporarily, the three sound elements restarted at 16 psi, which is 4 psi above the April baseline of 12 and outside the 2 psi return rule, so the set was finished regardless of the torn one. That is why the heater was cycling: the flow through a loaded set had fallen below what the heater's flow switch will hold in.

New set fitted, DE not applicable, o-rings replaced, band seated with even gap. Step 9: relief open, purged to solid water, relief closed. New clean baseline 11 psi, written on the equipment tag and the ticket. Heater run for fifteen minutes with no flow switch trip. Next cleaning is due at 19 to 21 psi, not on a date.
