Pool Automation Programming
Why this matters
A pool with a significant of automation equipment (controller, smart pump, smart heater, lights, valves) that is set to factory defaults is delivering 30 percent of its potential value. The customer paid for premium equipment expecting a "smart pool"; what they got is a pool with a complicated control panel they don't know how to use. The technician who can program the automation system for the customer's specific schedule, integrate the cleaner, heat schedule, and lighting to work in concert, and walk the customer through the smartphone app turns a "the automation doesn't really do anything" complaint into a "you're a wizard" relationship. The skill transfers across brands; the syntax differs but the principles are the same.
The four major automation platforms

Within each brand, multiple controller generations exist. The principles are the same; the menu structure differs.
What automation can control
Standard automation system controls:

A well-programmed system runs all of these in coordination. A poorly-programmed system runs them in conflict (cleaner running at low speed; heater calling but valve in wrong position).
Programming sequence
Step 1: Inventory the system
Walk the equipment pad and document:
- Pump brand, model, type (single-speed, variable-speed)
- Heater brand, model, BTU rating
- Filter type and size
- Salt cell (if equipped)
- Valves: which actuators are present and what they control
- Lights: count and type
- Cleaner: what type and how it's powered
- Solar (if equipped): collector area, sensor placement
- Existing automation controller (brand, model, generation)
A pad with a Pentair IntelliCenter and Hayward HeatPro heater requires bridging or replacement of one or the other. Verify integration before quoting work.
Step 2: Identify the customer's use pattern
Ask:
- "When do you typically swim?" (daily morning, weekend afternoon, evening)
- "Do you keep the pool warm year-round or just heat for sessions?"
- "Do you use the spa? When?"
- "Do you have parties or events when you want a 'show' mode?"
- "Are there days the pool isn't used?"
The schedule should match real use; saving energy during unused periods.
Step 3: Build the filtration schedule
For the typical residential pool (variable-speed pump):

Adjust to the customer's actual use. A pool with heavy bather load (daily family swim) needs more filtration. A vacation home with minimal use needs less.
For salt-cell systems, the salt cell needs the pump running to produce chlorine. The schedule must include enough pump time for the cell to generate adequate chlorine; verify against the cell's output capacity.
Step 4: Build the heat schedule
For a customer who uses the pool in the evening:
- Heat starts at 2:00 PM
- Setpoint 84 F
- Heater off at 8:00 PM
- Off overnight
For a customer who wants pool warm year-round:
- Continuous setpoint 80 F
- Heater calls anytime water drops below setpoint
- Heat pump preferred for this pattern
For a customer with both pool and spa:
- Pool setpoint 80 F (continuous)
- Spa setpoint 102 F (on-demand only via "Spa" button)
- Spa-to-pool valve actuates when spa is called
Step 5: Configure valves

Verify valve actuators move freely; an automation that thinks a valve is open but the actuator is stuck creates a flow problem.
Step 6: Configure lighting
For LED color-changing lights (Pentair IntelliBrite, Hayward Color Logic, Jandy WaterColors):
- Set scenes (each scene is a saved combination of colors)
- Common scenes: White (50 percent), Warm (sunset), Party (rotating colors), Holiday (red/green or themed)
- Schedule: sunset to 11 PM typical
- Customer-controlled override via app or wireless remote
Step 7: Configure smart features
- Cleaner integration: cleaner cycle runs at appropriate pump speed; pump speed adjusts when cleaner is running
- Solar prioritization: when collector is hotter than pool, automation opens solar valve first before calling gas heater
- Heater priority: gas heater stops when heat pump can handle the load (in hybrid configurations)
- Freeze protection: automation runs pumps in freezing temperatures to prevent line freeze (low priority, low speed)
- Chemistry integration: salt cell adjusts production based on bather load; pH controller (if equipped) doses acid to maintain pH
Step 8: Set up notifications
The automation app notifies the customer of:
- Filter pressure high (filter clean needed)
- Chemistry out of range
- Equipment fault
- Freeze warning
- Login from new device (security)
Set notifications to actionable items only; too many notifications produce ignore-fatigue and the customer disables them all.
Step 9: Customer walk-through
Show the customer:
- The app on their own phone, logged into their own account, with them doing the taps. Watching you do it teaches nothing
- Turn the pool light on and off, and change its color. This is the feature they will use most and the one they will call about
- Start and stop the spa, including the heat-up wait. Set the expectation for how long the spa actually takes to reach temperature so the first cold-tub call never happens
- The filtration schedule and why it is set the way it is, and that they should not "help" by running the pump at full speed all day
- The manual override, and how to get back to the normal schedule afterward. Most support calls are a customer stuck in an override they set weeks earlier
- What the panel does when the internet is down: the schedules keep running locally, only the app control stops
- Which notifications they will get and what each one means, so a freeze-protection alert at 2 a.m. does not read as an emergency
- Who to call and for what. Equipment fault calls you; router and Wi-Fi calls their internet provider
Leave a one-page card at the equipment pad with the schedule, the panel model, and your number. Note in the customer file that the walk-through was done and what you covered.
