Pool Brushing and Vacuuming Standard

Purpose

Brushing and vacuuming are the two mechanical steps that decide whether the chemistry on the same visit does any work. Algae holds in a biofilm on a shaded wall that no free chlorine reading reaches until something scrubs it loose, and fine dead algae that gets vacuumed through a cartridge instead of out to waste ends up as a filter the shop replaces early and a pool that stays cloudy for a week. This procedure guarantees the brush matches the interior surface, the pole is extended without putting an aluminum section into an overhead service drop, the vacuum path is chosen from the debris and the filter type rather than from habit, and every valve moved during the visit is put back with a check that the pump is actually running on it.

Scope

Covers routine and post-treatment brushing and vacuuming on residential and small semi-commercial pools, using a pole-mounted brush and a manual vacuum head through the skimmer or a dedicated vacuum line, plus the vacuum-to-waste decision.

It does not cover automatic cleaners, which the robotic and suction cleaner service standard owns, nor the full route visit around it, which the weekly recurring pool service standard owns. Startup brushing on new plaster is a different cadence and belongs to the plaster startup brushing protocol. Filter cleaning and media replacement are their own standard and are not restated here.

Procedure

  1. Empty the baskets and record filter pressure before anything else moves. Pull the skimmer basket and the pump strainer basket, clear them, and read the filter gauge with the pump running. Accept when both baskets are back in place, the strainer lid is seated on a lubricated o-ring, and the pressure is written down next to the clean-filter baseline. Wrong is running the pump with the strainer basket left out to "get more suction", which sends debris straight into the impeller. Hazard is the strainer lid itself: shut the pump off before opening it, because a pot under pressure launches a lid, and stand to the side rather than over it when you reopen the pump.

  2. Pick the brush from the interior surface, and clear the pole path overhead before extending it. Nylon bristle on vinyl and fiberglass; stainless bristle only on plaster, pebble or quartz, where it will not tear the surface. Look up and confirm the pole cannot reach the service drop, a weatherhead or any overhead conductor before it is extended, because a wet aluminum pole into a service conductor is an electrocution, not a shock. Accept when the brush matches the surface and the working arc is clear of every overhead line. Wrong is a steel brush on vinyl, which cuts it, or an extended pole under a drop: stop and work that section with the pole short, or from in the water, or not at all.

  3. Brush walls, steps, corners and the shaded side first, then the floor toward the main drain. Overlap each stroke by about half a brush width and work the places circulation misses: behind the ladder, under the coping lip, in the corners, and along the shady wall where algae starts. Accept the pass when no green or brown film smears under a fresh stroke on a spot you have already brushed. Wrong is a brushed pool that still smears on the second pass, which means the film is still attached and the chemistry that follows will read fine while the algae survives. Hazard is a slick deck edge and a long pole, so stand back from the coping and let the pole reach rather than leaning.

  4. Choose the vacuum path from the debris and the filter, before touching a valve. Leaves, grit and normal seasonal debris vacuum to the filter. Fine dead algae, silt and post-treatment fallout go to waste, because a cartridge or a DE grid loaded with fine material blinds off in minutes and pushes the fines back into the pool. Accept when the path is chosen and the filter type supports it: a multiport has a waste position, a cartridge system usually does not. Wrong is vacuuming silt to a cartridge because there is no waste setting: stop, and either run a bypass or bring a portable vacuum with its own bag, because a bladed cartridge is a replacement, not a cleaning. Hazard here is none at the valve handle; it is a decision made standing at the pad.

  5. Prime the hose and make every connection with the pump off. Fill the vacuum hose completely by holding it over a return until the air stops belching, then shut the pump down before seating the hose at the skimmer vac plate or the dedicated vacuum port. Accept when the pump is confirmed off at the impeller and no air remains in the hose. Wrong is connecting live at the skimmer, which pulls air into the pump and drops the prime, and worse is a hand held over an open suction fitting with the pump running, which is the entrapment mechanism at exactly the fitting people reach into. Open the pump disconnect and lock it under 29 CFR 1910.147 whenever a hand is going into a suction opening.

  6. Vacuum in slow overlapping passes, watching filter pressure and water level the whole time. Move at roughly half a normal walking pace so the head lifts debris instead of rolling a cloud ahead of it, and overlap each pass by about a third of the head width. Accept when the floor is clear on a visual sweep from two sides and pressure has not climbed more than 8 to 10 psi above the recorded clean baseline. Wrong is a rising pressure that keeps climbing, which means the filter is loading faster than it can pass water: stop and clean the filter mid-vacuum rather than finishing on a blinded one. When vacuuming to waste, run the fill hose and keep the level above the middle of the skimmer mouth, because a pump that sucks air at the skimmer runs dry and cooks its seal within minutes.

  7. Put every valve and the level back, restart, and verify the pump is running on the restored setting. Return the multiport to filter with the pump off, because turning a multiport under pressure tears the spider gasket, then reopen the main drain valve you throttled, refill to mid-skimmer, and remove any lockout only when no one is in the water and the outlet covers are confirmed with every fastener. Accept when the pump primes, returns run without air, and filter pressure settles at or near the clean baseline. Wrong is a pool left on waste or on recirculate overnight, which either empties it or leaves it unfiltered. Stand beside the strainer pot at restart rather than over it.

The clean-filter baseline is the number this whole standard reads against

Every pressure judgment in step 6 is a comparison, and it is worthless without the other half. A gauge reading 18 psi means nothing on its own: on a filter whose clean baseline is 10 psi that is a filter due for cleaning, and on one whose baseline is 16 psi it is a normal working pressure. Shops that do not carry the baseline forward end up backwashing on a number instead of on a rise, which wastes water on a clean filter and leaves a loaded one in service.

So the baseline is recorded every time the media is cleaned or replaced, on the ticket and on a label at the filter, and it changes when the media changes. A sand filter that has channelled or a cartridge that has been cleaned with a degreaser and never fully rinsed will show a low baseline and poor filtration at the same time, which is the one case where a low pressure is bad news rather than good.

The record this produces

The visit record, with the filter and debris fields that let a service manager see a trend rather than a series of unrelated stops.

Fields: skimmer and strainer basket condition; filter pressure on arrival and the clean baseline it is read against; brush type used and the surface it was used on; the overhead pole check as done or not applicable; the vacuum path chosen and the reason, with debris type named; whether a lockout was applied for a suction connection and when it came off; pressure at the end of vacuuming; gallons or inches of water lost if vacuumed to waste, and the level restored to; every valve moved and the position it was returned to; and the pump confirmed primed at departure.

The service manager reads the pressure pair across visits to see a filter approaching its service interval. The next technician reads the debris type to know whether to load a portable vacuum before leaving the shop. The office keeps the valve restoration line, because a pool found on waste the next morning is the call that costs a route.

Worked pass: a plaster pool after a wind event and an algae treatment

A 16 by 32 ft plaster pool, 512 sq ft of surface, cartridge filter with a clean baseline of 12 psi recorded on the label at the last cleaning. The pool was treated for algae four days ago, so the floor carries a gray-brown fallout of dead algae along with wind-blown leaf litter.

Step 1: skimmer basket full of leaf litter, strainer basket half full, both cleared. Filter gauge reads 18 psi with the pump running, which is 18 minus 12, or 6 psi over the clean baseline, so inside the 8 to 10 psi window but heading up.

Step 2: plaster surface, so the stainless brush is correct. Pole path checked and the service drop runs along the far side of the deck, so the deep-end wall is brushed with the pole short and from inside the fence line rather than extended under the drop.

Step 3: walls, steps, ladder backs and the shaded south wall brushed first, then the floor toward the main drain. A second stroke over the shaded wall no longer smears, so the pass is accepted.

Step 4 FAILS. The debris is fine dead algae, which the rule sends to waste, and this pool has a cartridge filter with no waste position. The stop rule is taken: nothing is vacuumed to the cartridge. The tech calls the service manager, a portable vacuum with its own bag is dispatched from a nearby stop, and the visit is extended rather than the fines being pushed into the pleats.

Steps 5 and 6 run on the portable unit. Hose primed at a return, pump left off during connection, no suction fitting handled live. Floor vacuumed in overlapping passes at half walking pace. Because the portable unit filters into its own bag rather than through the pool filter, no water leaves the pool and the level does not move; house filter pressure at the end still reads 18 psi, unchanged from arrival.

Step 7: nothing on the multiport to restore, since none was used, and that is recorded as not applicable rather than left blank. Main drain valve was never throttled. Pump confirmed primed, returns clear, level already at mid-skimmer. The ticket carries the 12 psi baseline and the 18 psi reading side by side, and flags the filter for cleaning at the next stop rather than backwashing a cartridge that cannot be backwashed.
