Etched or Stripped Finish Incident Response

Purpose

A finish that dulls, spots, or strips in front of the crew is not a slow-motion problem the way a plant symptom or a chalking complaint is. The reaction is often still running when it's noticed, and every additional minute of contact time before the surface is flooded with fresh water is more of the finish converted from repairable to gone. A crew that keeps working the section it was on, or reaches for a rag and a second product to try to fix what just happened, is treating an active chemical event like a cosmetic touch-up, and both mistakes turn a contained incident into a total loss on the affected item.

This procedure fixes what happens in the first minutes after anyone on the crew sees a finish change: a car's clear coat dulling under roof runoff, a powder-coated railing spotting white, a stained concrete surface losing color where the mix sat too long. It exists so the response does not depend on whether the tech who spots it recognizes the mechanism, only on whether they know to stop, flood, and hand off, the three things a novice can execute correctly even without understanding what oxidized the finish.

Scope

Covers the immediate on-site response from the moment a finish change is observed through same-day documentation and the office's further-action decision, on any painted, coated, metal, or stone surface not the intended treatment target.

Procedure

1. Stop chemical contact to the affected surface and every surface sharing its runoff or drift path, the instant a change is seen. Any dulling, spotting, color shift, or bubbling stops the current pass immediately, not at the end of the section. Acceptance: chemical application halted within seconds of the change being observed, on the affected surface and anything downstream of it. What wrong looks like: finishing the current section because it's already started, which extends contact time on the one surface where contact time is the entire mechanism of harm. Stop rule: no exceptions for being almost done with a pass; any visible finish change is an immediate stop, full stop, before anyone assesses how bad it is. Hazard: a surface mid-reaction still carries active chemical on it; anyone touching it to look closer wears gloves, bare-hand contact is treated the same as a splash.

2. Flood the affected surface with fresh water immediately, routed to a controlled discharge point, not to fix the finish but to stop the reaction. Rinse continuously for at least several minutes, longer if any residue is still visible, and direct the rinse water toward the job's established containment point rather than letting it run toward a storm inlet or a neighboring property. Acceptance: a timed, continuous rinse confirmed complete, with runoff routed per the wash-water containment standard's discharge plan. What wrong looks like: a quick splash-and-move-on rinse, which leaves a fraction of the reactive residue in contact with the finish while the crew moves on to document. Stop rule: the rinse does not stop at a stated minimum time if visible residue, film, or continued color change is still present; it continues until the surface runs clear. Hazard: the rinse water itself now carries the same chemical that caused the damage, and if that does not hold, then - a length of absorbent boom goes down at the nearest low point before the rinse starts, the same containment response a runoff breach gets.

3. Identify the material and the specific damage type before deciding anything, with photos. Name what the surface is (clear-coated paint, powder-coated metal, stained or sealed concrete, natural stone) and what happened to it: etching (a dulled, hazy, permanent surface change), stripping (coating or color lost down to bare substrate), bleaching (color loss with no texture change), or pitting (active metal corrosion). Acceptance: a named material, a named damage type, and close-up photos with a reference object for scale. What wrong looks like: calling it "just a water spot, should buff out" without checking whether the surface texture itself has changed, which it has in a true etch and will not buff away. Stop rule: any uncertainty about material or damage type escalates to the crew lead before continuing any chemical work anywhere else on the property; a finish failure in one spot means the mix, dwell, or technique may be off for the whole job, not isolated to one surface.

4. Pause all remaining chemical work on the property until the cause is understood. Check the mix strength and dwell time logged for the pass that caused the damage against the job ticket's target, and hold every other elevation or surface until that check is complete. Acceptance: a stated finding, either the mix and dwell were in band and the damage came from an unexpected material sensitivity, or one of them was out of band and that is the identified cause. What wrong looks like: continuing to wash the rest of the house on the assumption this was a one-off, while the same out-of-band mix is still in the tank. Stop rule: if the check cannot determine a clear cause on-site, work stops for the day and resumes another visit rather than continuing on a mix or technique that has not been cleared.

5. Notify the customer directly and in person before the crew leaves, regardless of fault determination. State plainly what happened, what has been done so far, and what happens next; do this in person or by an immediate phone call if the customer is not on-site, never by a note left for later discovery. Acceptance: a logged, direct notification with a time, made before departure. What wrong looks like: finishing the job quietly and waiting to see if the customer notices before saying anything. Stop rule: no direct notification, no departure from the property; this holds even when the crew believes the damage is minor or unrelated to their work.

6. Do not attempt an on-site remedy beyond the flood rinse. No polish, buffing compound, second chemical, or abrasive gets applied to the affected surface by the crew, regardless of confidence that it would help. Acceptance: nothing beyond fresh water touches the affected area after step 2. What wrong looks like: reaching for a detailing product from the truck to try to bring the shine back, which is an uncontrolled experiment on a surface whose remaining tolerance is already unknown. Stop rule: any further remedy is a referral to a specialist, a detailer, a refinisher, a restoration contractor, decided by the office, never attempted in the field.

7. Escalate to the office the same day with full documentation. Send photos, the identified material and damage type, the mix and dwell findings, and the customer notification time before the day closes. Acceptance: office notified same day, not at next check-in. What wrong looks like: handling it informally on-site with a verbal "we'll make it right," which can commit the shop to a remedy before insurance or a specialist has weighed in, or leave a customer with an unfulfilled promise if the claim turns out more involved than it looked.

The record this produces

One incident record per finish event, separate from the job ticket, reviewed by the office before any remedy is promised.

Fields: material and damage type, photos with scale reference, mix strength and dwell logged for the causing pass, cause finding, customer notification time, and the referral or claims path chosen.

The office reads the mix-and-dwell finding first, since a pattern of in-band mixes still causing damage on a specific material points at a technique or material-compatibility gap the whole crew needs, not a one-time mixing error to correct with one tech.

Worked pass: roof soft-wash runoff onto a carport-parked vehicle

Crew is soft-washing a roof at 1 percent SH per the roof target, with the customer's classic car parked under an attached carport directly below the fascia, left there with the customer's assurance it would be "fine, it's covered."

Step 1. Fifteen minutes into the roof section above the carport, the tech notices a hazy dulling spreading across the hood where runoff has been dripping off the fascia edge. Application to that roof section stops within seconds; the tech does not finish the current pass. PASS.

Step 2 FAILED and took its stop rule. The tech gives the hood a fast rinse, maybe thirty seconds, and moves to grab the camera to document, leaving a visible film still on the paint. The crew lead, checking the rinse before allowing photos, sends the tech back to flood the hood continuously until it runs clear, routed off the driveway's low side into the job's existing containment boom rather than toward the street. The full rinse runs close to four minutes before the surface is clear.

Step 3. Material identified as clear-coated automotive paint; damage type identified as etching, a hazy, non-glossy patch roughly the size of a dinner plate that does not restore with a wipe. Close-up photos taken with a coin for scale.

Step 4. Mix and dwell for that roof section checked against the ticket: 1 percent SH, dwell held to the standard window, both in band. Cause finding: the roof runoff concentrated where it dripped repeatedly off one fascia point, giving the hood far longer effective contact time than a single dilute droplet would, a drip-point exposure the standard mix target does not account for on anything parked directly underneath. Remaining roof sections held pending relocation of the vehicle.

Step 5. Crew lead speaks with the customer in person, explains the dulling, the rinse already performed, and that the vehicle needs to move before the rest of the roof runs. Customer moves the car; work resumes on the remaining sections.

Step 6. No polish or second product applied to the hood. Crew lead documents this explicitly on the incident record.

Step 7. Office notified same day with photos, the drip-point cause finding, and the customer conversation. A detailer referral is arranged for an assessment within the week.

What step 2's stop bought: a thirty-second rinse leaving visible film on the paint would have let the reaction continue for the additional minutes it takes anyone to walk to a truck for a camera, likely deepening an etch that a full flood rinse, run immediately, may still have limited to a shallower, more repairable haze.
