Fleet and Equipment Wash Procedure Standard

Purpose

A fleet vehicle is a different substrate than a driveway, and the two most common ways a fleet wash goes wrong are invisible at handover. Pressure and chemistry strong enough to lift road grime off a painted panel can also force water past a door or window seal into wiring it was never meant to reach, showing up days later as an intermittent electrical fault nobody connects back to a wash. And a fleet vehicle's own runoff, carrying brake dust and whatever oil residue the vehicle itself is leaking, is treated as a distinct discharge category in many jurisdictions specifically because of what it carries, not because it looks any different from a house-wash rinse crossing the same lot. This standard sets the zone-by-zone pressure rule that protects the vehicle and the drain-routing check that protects the shop from a discharge violation that a plain-water job at the same address would never trigger.

The failure it prevents: a forced-water electrical fault discovered by the fleet owner weeks later with no way to trace it back, a decal or wrap lifted at the edge from too-close pressure, and wash water carrying a visible sheen crossing a lot's storm inlet in a jurisdiction that treats mobile vehicle washing as its own regulated category.

Scope

Pressure washing customer-owned fleet vehicles, vans, pickups, and box trucks, and yard-mounted equipment exteriors at a commercial lot, using a belt-drive pump in the 4 to 8 GPM class. Covers the pre-wash damage and graphics walkaround, zone-appropriate pressure and standoff, chemical selection, and the vehicle-wash-specific wastewater call.

Does not cover engine bay cleaning or interior detailing, out of scope entirely; route that work to a detailer. Does not re-derive the general containment mechanics owned by the wash water containment and storm drain protection standard, but adds the vehicle-specific discharge classification that standard doesn't cover.

The procedure

  1. Walk every vehicle before any water runs and log existing damage, decal condition, and any lifting or peeling graphic edge. Photograph anything already present: a chip, a scratch, a graphic edge starting to lift. Accept: a dated, photographed log per vehicle, reviewed with the fleet manager before work starts. Wrong: starting the wash and only noticing a lifting decal corner once the wand has already been near it. Stop rule: any graphic edge already lifting gets flagged and routed to hand-wash for that panel in step 3, not the pressure wand. Hazard: none, this is a visual walkaround.

  2. Set the working pressure and standoff for painted body panels at the low end of the rig's range before touching a single vehicle. A common starting point for painted panels is under roughly 1,500 PSI at the tip with at least 12 inches of standoff, tuned to the specific paint and clear coat condition; a wide fan tip, never a pinpoint nozzle, on any painted surface. Accept: nozzle and pressure confirmed before the first panel, matching this range or the fleet's own documented tolerance if stricter. Wrong: using the same tight-pattern, higher-pressure setup carried over from the last driveway job. Stop rule: any panel showing a rougher paint condition than expected, chalking, prior clear-coat failure, gets an even wider pattern and greater standoff before continuing, not the standard setting. Hazard: none new at this step.

  3. Wash body panels top-down in the pressure and standoff set at step 2, keeping the flagged panel from step 1 to hand-wash only. Accept: full panel coverage with no static dwell of the wand on any one spot. Wrong: parking the stream on a stubborn spot of grime instead of moving the wand and letting the chemical do the work. Stop rule: the flagged panel from step 1 does not get the pressure wand at all; hand-wash it with a brush and hose-pressure rinse only. Hazard: debris kicked up by the stream off a dirty panel; eye protection stays on throughout.

  4. Confirm the lot's drain routing before mixing any degreaser, and treat vehicle wash runoff as requiring containment by default rather than only when a sheen is visible. Many local ordinances specifically regulate mobile vehicle washing because of the brake dust and residual oil it carries, at a lower threshold than a plain-water rinse; confirm your local requirement rather than assuming the flatwork standard's storm-drain rule covers this case identically. Accept: a confirmed routing, storm, land, or a drain the property has already permitted for this use, documented before chemical goes down. Wrong: assuming a visibly clear rinse is fine to let reach a nearby storm inlet because no sheen is showing yet. Stop rule: unconfirmed routing with a storm inlet anywhere in the lot's flow path means seal the inlet and stage containment before the wheel-well degreaser in the next step goes down, same as the flatwork standard's own default. Hazard: none new.

  5. Wash wheel wells and lower body sections separately, with a tighter pattern and a brake-dust-rated degreaser, since this zone carries no graphics and tolerates more aggressive cleaning. Accept: visible brake dust and road film cleared from the wheel and lower rocker area. Wrong: treating the wheel well with the same wide, gentle pattern used on painted panels above, which won't clear embedded dust. Stop rule: none beyond the general chemical hazard below; this zone is where more pressure is appropriate, not where it's restricted. Hazard: the degreaser here is the same alkaline product class covered in the flatwork procedure standard, and a splash burns skin and eyes on contact; gloves and eye protection stay on, and if splash reaches skin or eyes anyway, then flush with clean water for the SDS-stated time and seek care if irritation persists.

  6. Rinse every door seam, window seal, and gap with a wide, moving fan pattern, never a stationary aim directly at a seal. Accept: every seam and seal rinsed in continuous motion, no pause longer than a normal pass would take. Wrong: holding the wand still on a door seam to chase a stubborn line of grime built up in the gap. Stop rule: if grime in a seam doesn't clear with a moving pass, leave it and note it rather than increasing dwell time on that spot; a seam is exactly where forced water finds its way past a seal. Hazard: the hazard here is what the step exists to prevent, water forced past a seal into wiring or electronics; there's no in-the-moment injury risk, but the stop rule is the control, not a second attempt at the same spot.

  7. Rinse the full vehicle to clear, watching the runoff path continuously the same way the flatwork standard requires. Accept: visible flow stays inside the contained or confirmed-safe path for the full rinse. Wrong: widening the fan tip near a containment line to finish faster. Stop rule: flow reaching a containment line means throttle back and reposition immediately. Hazard: wet pavement near a working lot is a slip and vehicle-traffic hazard; keep the work zone visible to any vehicle moving through the lot.

  8. Where step 4 sealed an inlet, remove the seal and inspect the grate for sheen or residue before packing up; then walk each vehicle against its step 1 log and document the wastewater routing used. Accept: the inlet clear with no visible sheen, every pre-logged damage item still matching, no new damage found, and the ticket carrying the routing decision from step 4. Wrong: loading up without pulling the seal to look, or without a final compare against the log. Stop rule: any sheen at the inlet gets a plain-water flush of the surrounding area before the seal comes off for good; any new vehicle damage or a discrepancy against the log gets flagged to the fleet manager on-site, not discovered after the crew has left. Hazard: none, this is the final walk.

The record this produces

A per-vehicle damage log with before photos, the pressure and product settings used, and the wastewater routing decision with its basis, confirmed storm-drain-adjacent or land-applied, or contained. A fleet manager reviewing this across a recurring contract is checking that no vehicle's log shows new, unexplained damage and that a lot with a storm inlet nearby always shows a containment decision, not an assumption.

One run of this standard, filled in

A four-van courier fleet at a small company's lot, decal-wrapped panel vans, moderate road grime and brake dust, no pre-existing damage flagged by the office at booking.

  • Step 1: walkaround found minor pre-existing scuffs on two vans, logged and photographed. One van's rear decal showed a lifting corner about 2 inches along the bottom edge. Flagged for hand-wash on that panel only.
  • Step 2: pressure and standoff set to the painted-panel range.
  • Step 3: three vans washed top-down at the standard setting; the flagged van's rear panel hand-washed instead of wanded.
  • Step 4: the crew initially treated the lot's storm inlet the way a residential driveway job would, planning to let plain-looking rinse water reach it since no visible sheen was present. Fail. Caught before any degreaser was mixed, when the office's site note, pulled up mid-job on the routing check, flagged that this city's mobile-vehicle-wash ordinance requires containment for any commercial fleet wash regardless of visible sheen. Stop rule taken: inlet sealed, a containment sock staged, before wheel-well work began.
  • Step 5: wheel wells and lower rockers degreased and rinsed on all four vans, now inside the contained zone.
  • Step 6: seals and seams rinsed with a moving pattern, no static dwell.
  • Step 7: rinse stayed inside the contained zone for all four vehicles.
  • Step 8: seal pulled from the inlet, grate clear with no sheen. Final walk matched all four vans against the step 1 log, no new damage, routing decision and reason documented on the ticket.

The correction at step 4 happened before any degreaser reached the ground, which is what kept it a documentation catch instead of an actual discharge. The same job worked from habit, skipping straight to wheel-well degreasing without checking the local ordinance against this specific job type, reaches the inlet with brake-dust-laden rinse water before anyone thinks to check.

When the call does not run as written

A vehicle has a known mechanical leak. Note it in the pre-wash log and treat any runoff from directly under that vehicle as requiring containment regardless of what the rest of the lot's routing decision was.

A fleet manager wants the engine bay cleaned too. Decline; it's out of this standard's scope, and route them to a shop that does engine detailing rather than improvising a procedure this standard doesn't cover.

A decal or wrap covers more than half a panel and shows any lifting anywhere on the vehicle. Hand-wash the entire panel, not just the lifted corner, since pressure near an otherwise-intact edge can start a second lift point.
