What the site showed

Weather notes on the ticket recorded a clear, mild morning at start with the job running into early afternoon by the time the crew reached the gable in question, which turned out to matter once the sun-exposure angle became relevant.

On site, the streaking ran roughly vertically, following the direction water would travel down the wall rather than following any gutter or downspout line, and it was more pronounced on the gable's west-facing half, the side that gets afternoon sun. The east-facing half of the same gable, worked earlier in the application sequence per the ticket's timing notes, showed no streaking at all, which meant whatever caused this was tied to when or where on the wall the chemical was applied, not to the wash as a whole.

Ruling out hard water spotting

Hard water spotting from mineral-heavy rinse water was the first candidate, since it is a common cause of streaking that shows up after a wash dries: dissolved calcium and magnesium in the rinse water stay behind as the water evaporates, leaving a mineral film wherever the last of the rinse water sat longest. It was ruled out on three points. First, hard water spotting typically shows as a general filmy haze or discrete circular spots where droplets dried individually, not a directional streak running the length of the wall. Second, the rinse water source for this job was the same municipal supply used on every job that week, with no other callback reported from the same route, and a cause tied to the water supply should show up across multiple jobs, not one gable of one house. Third, the technician wet a small, inconspicuous test patch on the affected gable with plain water from the same source and let it air dry; no spotting formed, which directly tested and ruled out the water supply itself as the source.

Ruling out an inconsistent mix

An injector surging or clogging mid-application, producing bands of stronger and weaker concentration as it ran, was the second candidate, since that would plausibly explain a banded, uneven look. The ticket's mix log showed one ratio logged for the whole job, not multiple readings taken through the run, so the crew re-tested the same injector the following morning: catching its output into a graduated container over a timed 60-second run at the same setting used on the original job. The catch measured a chemical draw consistent with the 1-to-20 ratio logged on the ticket, repeated three times with less than a few percent variation between runs, no surge and no drop-off. Nothing about the injector's current performance supported an inconsistent-concentration explanation, and there was no note anywhere on the ticket of it behaving differently on the day of the original job.

Ruling out pre-existing staining

Tannin bleed from a nearby tree, or rust staining from a fastener or fixture, can produce a streaked look that a wash did not cause and could not fully remove; both are common enough on an older house that they are worth checking even when the pattern looks technique-related, since assuming the wash caused everything is its own way of missing the real cause. This was ruled out directly from the before-photos on file: taken close enough to the wall to resolve individual streaks if any had been present, they showed uniform algae coverage with no streak pattern visible underneath it once the growth is accounted for. The current streak locations were checked against the wall's actual fixtures next, walking the gable and marking where any vent, light fixture, or fastener line sat relative to the streaking; none of them lined up, and there was no overhanging branch on that elevation at all. A pre-existing stain would have shown through the algae in the before-photos or lined up with a physical source on the wall; this streaking did neither, which closes off both variants of this candidate rather than leaving it as a lingering maybe.

What actually happened

The remaining explanation matched every piece of evidence: a broken wet edge on the west-facing half of the gable, where afternoon sun during the original application dried the leading edge of one pass before the next pass reached it, exactly the drying-and-crystallizing mechanism the wash standard's own worked example describes on a different wall of the same house. The vertical direction matched the direction water runs down a wall rather than any fixture line, the west-facing bias matched the side that gets afternoon sun and the ticket's own timing notes showing that half worked later in the afternoon, and the pattern being confined to one gable rather than showing up shop-wide matched a site-specific application issue rather than a water-supply or injector problem, both of which had already been tested and cleared. The east-facing half, worked earlier before the sun angle shifted, never crossed into the fast-evaporation conditions the dwell-and-temperature guidance describes, which is exactly why it came out clean while the later, sun-exposed half did not.

The crew that ran the original job had not adjusted section size or re-wetting cadence for the sun exposure difference between the gable's two halves, treating the whole elevation as one uniform pass regardless of the time of day each half was actually worked. Nothing about their mix or their sequence was wrong on paper; what was missing was reading the wall's own conditions as they changed over the course of the job rather than running the same pace start to finish.

The fix and how it was verified

The affected sections were re-mixed at the standard ratio, re-applied working in narrower sections on the west-facing half specifically, with a deliberate re-wet pass before the dwell window closed, then rinsed top to bottom per the standard sequence. Because the underlying cause was a broken wet edge and not a mix or equipment fault, the fix here was the same procedure done more carefully, not a different chemical or a stronger ratio; treating a technique failure as a chemistry problem would have added unneeded strength to the mix without addressing the pacing issue that actually caused the streaking.

The technician verified the fix at close range along the full gable in the same late-afternoon light the customer had first noticed the streaking in, rather than checking it under midday sun where a faint residue is harder to see, and photographed the result in that light before leaving. A fix confirmed only under different lighting than the one that revealed the problem is not a confirmed fix; a faint mineral or chemical residue that is invisible in flat midday sun can still be plainly visible in the low, raking light of late afternoon, which is exactly the condition the customer's original complaint came in under.

What would point somewhere else next time

If this same complaint arrived with the streak pattern following the gutter and downspout line instead of running down the open wall, that shifts the likely cause toward tannin or rust staining being pulled loose and redeposited during the wash rather than a drying issue, and the response is different: identify and address the staining source rather than adjusting application technique, since re-washing the same way would reproduce the same result. Location and direction of the pattern, not just its presence, is what tells these two apart, and it is why this case walked the wall's fixtures physically rather than ruling out staining on the photo evidence alone.

A second variant worth naming: if the streaking had shown up on every elevation rather than concentrated on the side worked latest in the day, that pattern points back toward the injector or the mix log rather than toward sun exposure, since a pacing problem tied to time-of-day sun angle should track with when each wall was worked, not appear uniformly regardless of sequence. The injector test in this case came back clean because the equipment genuinely was not the problem; a shop that skips that test on the assumption "it's always the wet edge" will eventually miss the job where it really was the injector.
