Pergola and Outdoor Structure Wash Standard
Purpose
A pergola, arbor, or gazebo is the same wood chemistry as a deck wired to a different geometry: overhead, multi-plane, often carrying string lights or a ceiling fan, sitting over furniture, plantings, or a patio the crew has to keep dry underneath while working above it. Wash it with a deck's bottom-up sequence and runoff carries dirt back onto sections already rinsed; wash it near a fixture nobody isolated and the job is now an electrical incident; work it off an unstable ladder base on pavers or gravel and the fall risk is real, not theoretical. This standard applies the wash chemistry the wood-safe wash standard already fixes to a structure whose sequence, access, and electrical exposure are genuinely different, and it owns exactly those differences.
Scope
Covers washing of pergolas, arbors, gazebos, trellises, and similar overhead or multi-plane outdoor wood structures. Wash chemistry, ratio, and the mechanical pressure ceiling are owned by the Wood-Safe Low-Pressure Wash Standard and the Pressure Setting Reference for Wood Surfaces; this SOP calls both rather than restating the numbers. Species leaning is owned by the Wood Species and Treatment Compatibility Reference. This SOP owns what changes with the geometry: top-down sequence, electrical fixture isolation, ladder access, and protecting what sits beneath the structure.
Out of scope: ground-level decking and fencing (Wood-Safe Low-Pressure Wash Standard), roof soft-washing (Roof Soft Wash Procedure Standard), and any structure whose height or configuration exceeds a standard extension ladder's rated reach, which routes to the office for a lift decision before the job is scheduled.

Before anyone goes up
Treat every mounted fixture as live until it is positively isolated and tested, not just switched off. A wall switch can control only part of a circuit, and a plug-in transformer feeding string lights can stay powered from an outlet the wall switch never touches. Identify the actual breaker, shut it off and tag it, then confirm dead with a non-contact tester at the fixture itself before any water reaches that section. And if a circuit cannot be positively identified or isolated, do not wash directly over that section; work around it, note the exclusion on the ticket, and route to an electrician or the homeowner's panel documentation before the next visit.
Ladder footing on a pergola job is rarely the flat, solid ground a house-wash setup gets. Pavers, gravel, and mulch beds are common under a pergola, and each needs its own leveling check under the Ladder Classification and Load Rating Reference before the first rung is climbed; see that reference and the Ladder Work and Roof Access Safety standard for the setup mechanics, which this SOP calls rather than re-deriving.
The procedure
Identify and isolate every fixture mounted on or near the structure, then verify dead at the fixture. Locate the breaker for string lights, a ceiling fan, sconces, or any plug-in transformer feeding the structure, shut it off, tag it, and test with a non-contact tester at the fixture itself, not just at the panel. Acceptance: a tester confirmation logged for each fixture, not a breaker position alone. Wrong looks like a breaker flipped off while the fixture is fed from an outlet on a different circuit the crew never checked. Stop rule: any circuit that cannot be positively identified stops water application to that section; wash around it. Hazard: this is the section's own control point; a fixture assumed dead without a tester reading is the mechanism this step exists to remove.
Clear or cover everything beneath the full footprint before any water goes overhead. Move cushions and furniture, cover built-in seating, and confirm the Plant and Landscaping Protection standard has run for anything planted underneath or beside the structure. Acceptance: the full footprint below clear or covered, checked before the ladder goes up, not while the first section is already being sprayed. Wrong looks like furniture pushed "mostly clear" with cushions left in the drip zone. Stop rule: overhead application does not start until the full footprint below is confirmed clear. Hazard: slip risk moving furniture on a surface already damp from dew or a prior pass; footing checked before carrying anything heavy.
Set up ladder access per the Ladder Work and Roof Access Safety standard, checked against the actual base under this structure. Confirm the correct duty rating, a 4-to-1 pitch, at least 3 feet of extension above the working edge, and a level, stable base on whatever surface sits under the pergola. Acceptance: the setup checked against that standard before the first rung is climbed, re-checked at each relocation. Wrong looks like a ladder set on loose gravel with no leveling accessory. Stop rule: an unstable or unlevel base gets reset, leveled, or moved to solid ground; never compensate by leaning the ladder to true it up. Hazard: fall from height on an unstable base; this step exists to prevent exactly that outcome.
Walk the structure's members for species, condition, and hardware before mixing chemical. Note species per member (rafters, purlins, posts, lattice) against the Wood Species and Treatment Compatibility Reference, and flag any bolt, bracket, or joint where chemical should not be allowed to pool. Acceptance: a species and condition note covering every member type, with hardware locations flagged. Wrong looks like reading only the posts and assuming the rafters match. Stop rule: active rot or a visibly failed connection at a load-bearing post or beam joint stops work on that member; route to a structural assessment before adding any water weight near it. Hazard: overhead debris or a loose fastener falling while the member is inspected by hand; a hard hat is worn for this step and the two that follow it.
Apply wash chemistry top-down, rafters and purlins first, then posts and lattice, then the base, at the ratio and ceiling set in the Wood-Safe Low-Pressure Wash Standard. Keep the sequence strictly top to bottom so runoff carries dirt onto sections not yet washed rather than re-soiling sections already done, and keep direct spray off any hardware flagged in step 4. Acceptance: full coverage completed in top-to-bottom order, pressure confirmed under the ceiling for the species at each level. Wrong looks like starting at the posts because they are easier to reach, then re-contaminating them once the rafters are washed. Stop rule: a broken sequence gets restarted at the correct order for that section rather than pressed through out of order. Hazard: runoff and chemical falling on a second tech working below; stagger positions so nobody stands directly under an active overhead pass.
Rinse at the pressure ceiling that matches each member's thickness, dropping below the standard ceiling on any thin member. Lattice strips and trim under about an inch of actual thickness fuzz and flex at pressures solid rafters tolerate; per the Pressure Setting Reference for Wood Surfaces, drop to the cedar-and-thin-member ceiling on every lattice panel regardless of species, wider tip, greater standoff, sweeping continuously with the grain. Acceptance: no fuzzing or visible flex under the spray anywhere on a thin member. Wrong looks like the same setting run across a solid rafter and an adjoining lattice panel because "it's all the same wash." Stop rule: any flex or fuzzing on a thin member drops pressure immediately and flags that panel on the ticket. Hazard: overhead spray reaction pushing the tech off balance on a ladder; keep the wand at or below shoulder height and reposition the ladder rather than overreaching sideways.
Verify every isolated fixture restored and function-tested, then hand off to Rinse Sequence and Final Inspection. Restore power at the breaker and confirm the fixture actually works, lights on, fan spinning, tested with the tester showing normal voltage, not just the breaker flipped back. Acceptance: each fixture function-tested and confirmed, plus the rinse standard's sign-off attached. Wrong looks like a breaker restored with nobody watching whether the light came on. Stop rule: the job does not close with a restored circuit unverified. Hazard: none from this step; the hazard it closes is a customer discovering dead string lights during an evening gathering with no tech there to trace it.
The record this produces
A structure worksheet: fixture isolation log (breaker identified, tested dead, restored and verified), species and condition by member, sequence confirmation, coverage notes flagging any thin member that needed the lower ceiling, furniture and plant protection sign-off, and the rinse handoff. This is the record that answers "was that light ever actually tested" months later, and it is what a fuzzed-lattice complaint gets checked against.
One run of this procedure, filled in

- Step 1: fan breaker identified, tagged off, tester confirms dead at the fixture. String-light transformer traced to a GFCI-protected outlet; that outlet's breaker also tagged off and tested dead at the light string.
- Step 2: patio furniture and cushions cleared, plant bed along one post covered.
- Step 3: ladder set on the paver base, checked level, footing solid at each relocation.
- Step 4: cedar throughout, standard lean-ratio category per the compatibility reference; one bracket showing early rust bleed flagged to keep spray off.
- Step 5: applied top-down, rafters and purlins first, posts and lattice second, base last, no sequence break.
- Step 6: this step failed on one lattice panel. Working the far corner, the tech ran the same setting used on the solid posts across an adjoining lattice panel without dropping pressure, and two thin strips showed visible flex and a small fuzzed patch. Stop rule taken: pressure dropped immediately, standoff increased, the rest of both lattice panels finished at the corrected setting with no further flex or fuzzing. The two strips were flagged on the ticket for replacement rather than re-washed.
- Step 7: fan and outlet circuits restored, both function-tested, fan spinning and lights lit before the crew left.
The fuzzed lattice strips are why step 6 names thickness, not species, as the trigger: cedar posts and cedar lattice on the same structure do not share a pressure ceiling, and a setting correct for one is already over the line for the other.
