Plant and Landscaping Protection Before a Wash

Purpose

A house wash finishes clean and the callback comes three days later: the boxwoods along the walkway have gone yellow at the tips, or a whole azalea has wilted. By then the wash water is long gone and the only evidence left is the plant and whatever got written down at the time. This standard fixes what gets checked, wetted, and covered before chemical ever reaches a treated surface next to living plants, what happens to any plant that takes contact anyway, and what the crew tells the customer before they drive off, so a delayed symptom is something the customer was already told to watch for rather than a surprise.

The mechanism this standard controls is dose and contact time, not the product name on the jug. A chemical diluted correctly for the siding is still full-strength wherever it lands on a leaf before rinse, and a leaf holds contact far longer than a painted surface does.

Scope

Covers protecting plants, shrubs, and turf adjacent to a treated surface on a residential or light-commercial wash: pre-wash identification, wetting, covering, application technique near a bed edge, and post-wash rinse and monitoring.

Does not cover: storm drain and runoff destination, which the containment standard owns and runs alongside this one on the same job; and the chemistry behind why a given product damages foliage, which the surfactant and plant toxicity reference owns and this standard assumes as its working basis.

Procedure

  1. Walk every planting bed adjacent to a surface you'll treat, and flag anything within about 3 feet of that surface before wetting anything - tighter for a high-value or unusually sensitive specimen. That distance is a shop default, not a code figure; tighten it for anything you're not sure will tolerate incidental drift. Accept: a stated list, even a mental one, of every bed and specimen inside the flagged zone. Wrong: starting the wash and reacting to plants as the wand reaches them. Stop rule: a plant you can't identify or judge the value of gets the conservative full-cover treatment in step 3, not a guess. Hazard: none, this is a site read.

  2. Pre-wet foliage and the root zone of every flagged plant with plain water immediately before that section is treated, not earlier in the day. A wet leaf and moist soil dilute and buffer incidental contact; a dry one does not. Accept: visible wet sheen on leaves and moist soil at the drip line right before chemical touches that section. Wrong: pre-wetting the whole yard first thing and letting the morning sun dry it out before the wash gets there an hour later. Stop rule: more than about 15 minutes between pre-wet and treatment on that section means re-wet before proceeding. Hazard: none new.

  3. Cover a flagged high-value or highly sensitive plant with plastic sheeting anchored at the base on every side, not draped loose over the top. A gap at the bottom is where a fan-tip pass finds its way in. Accept: sheeting sealed to the ground or mulch with no visible gap, checked by hand before spraying starts. Wrong: a sheet weighted only at the corners that a breeze lifts mid-pass. Stop rule: a cover that lifts during the wash stops that section immediately for re-anchoring before continuing. Hazard: a dark cover in full sun traps heat against foliage fast - pull the cover the moment that section's chemical work is done, never leave it on until the whole property is finished, because heat scald under a cover looks identical to chemical burn on the callback three days later and this SOP is what tells them apart.

  4. Apply the working solution to the surface, not toward the plant, using reduced pressure and a wider fan near any bed edge. A narrow tip close to the edge cuts faster and drifts further. Accept: no visible chemical droplet pattern on any uncovered foliage after the pass. Wrong: running a narrow tip tight along a bed edge because it's quicker than backing off. Stop rule: visible chemical contact on uncovered foliage stops that pass immediately and moves straight to step 5's rinse, not to finishing the section first. Hazard: sodium hypochlorite mist drifting at a bed edge is a skin and eye contact route the same as anywhere else on the job; if wind picks up mid-pass, drop pressure and widen distance rather than push through, and if that does not hold the wind, stop and wait it out.

  5. Cap dwell time on any incidental chemical contact and rinse before it sets: uncovered foliage that took contact gets a plain-water rinse within about 10 minutes of that section's pass. That cap is a shop default tuned to how fast the label's product breaks down on a wet leaf; use the label's own guidance where it states one. Accept: contacted foliage visibly rinsed clear within the window, on the same visit. Wrong: finishing the entire property first and coming back to rinse plants last. Stop rule: contact left unrinsed past the cap is logged as a likely-damage event and flagged to the customer regardless of how the plant looks that day, because the symptom is often delayed by 24 to 72 hours.

  6. Remove plant covers and flush the covered root zone with plain water as soon as that section's chemical work is finished. Accept: cover off, root zone visibly moist after the flush, plant upright and undamaged by the cover itself. Wrong: leaving covers on until the whole job is done because moving them is one more trip. Stop rule: a cover found torn, or a plant found crushed or bent under one, becomes its own damage entry on the record, separate from any chemical question - don't fold a mechanical mistake into a chemical explanation because it's an easier conversation.

  7. Walk every flagged bed again at the end of the job with fresh eyes, after covers are off and the surface is dry enough to see clearly. Accept: no visible foliage discoloration, no chemical odor at bed level, every cover accounted for and back on the truck. Wrong: trusting a mental note from an hour ago instead of looking again. Stop rule: any discoloration found on-site, however faint, gets logged and photographed before you leave, not mentally filed as "probably fine."

  8. Tell the customer, out loud and on the ticket, what was covered, what was buffered only, and what to watch for over the next 24 to 72 hours before you leave. Accept: customer given a specific window and a specific symptom to watch for - leaf-margin yellowing or browning - not a generic "let us know if anything looks off." Wrong: leaving without mentioning it and letting a delayed symptom arrive as a surprise callback with no context. Stop rule: a customer who reports damage after being told what to watch for gets a faster, better-documented response than one who wasn't, because the conversation starts from a shared timeline instead of a dispute.

The record this produces

The ticket carries: which beds and specimens were flagged, which got full covers versus buffer-and-technique only, any contact event and whether it stayed inside the rinse cap, the final bed walk result, and the customer conversation with its monitoring window. A reported cover failure or crush is its own line, not folded into the chemical narrative.

Worked pass, with a step that failed

A front-walk job: a low hedge of boxwood runs along both sides of a concrete path being treated with a diluted surfactant house-wash mix, no sodium hypochlorite near the hedge on this pass.

Step 1 flagged the entire hedge run as within the 3-foot zone. Step 2 pre-wet the hedge immediately ahead of the wand reaching that section. Step 3 covered a young transplant at the hedge's end that the customer had mentioned was struggling, sealed at the base.

Step 4 failed on the middle third of the hedge. A gust came up while the tech was mid-pass with a narrower tip than the edge called for, and a visible mist pattern landed on about a two-foot run of uncovered foliage. The stop rule fired: that pass stopped immediately.

Step 5 ran the recovery: the contacted run was rinsed with plain water within about 4 minutes of the contact, well inside the 10-minute cap.

Step 6 removed the young transplant's cover once that section was done, root zone flushed. Step 7's final walk found no visible discoloration on the rinsed run, and step 8 told the customer specifically about that two-foot section and the 24 to 72 hour window, distinct from the rest of the hedge which had no contact at all.

Two days later the customer reported the transplant, not the rinsed section, looked slightly wilted. Because the record separated the two events, the crew lead could rule out chemical contact for the transplant (it was covered the whole time) and correctly diagnosed transplant stress unrelated to the wash - a conclusion nobody could have reached confidently without step 8's specific, dated conversation to compare against.
