Rinse Sequence and Final Inspection Standard
Purpose
A soft wash without a controlled rinse is only half a job: the chemical that killed the growth is still sitting on the siding, still capable of drying into a haze, still capable of running off wherever gravity takes it rather than where the crew intended. This standard fixes the rinse direction, the discharge routing, and a four-point inspection the job must pass before the crew leaves, so a callback for a streak, a lingering residue, or a customer's plant flagging days later is caught here instead of on a return trip that costs the shop the labor twice.
Scope
Covers rinse-off of the wash chemical from every treated elevation, wastewater routing during the rinse, uncovering and re-rinsing anything protected under the Pre-Wet and Plant Protection standard, and the closing walk-around inspection with photo documentation. Runs immediately after the Soft Wash House Procedure standard's dwell step and closes the job. Does not cover the wash application itself, the initial protection setup, or ladder access, which follows the same standard already set in the sibling SOPs and is not restated here.

Before the rinse starts
Rinse water carrying dissolved SH and surfactant is the point where this job's wastewater actually leaves the property, and it is treated as an illicit discharge if it reaches a storm drain under most local ordinances enforcing the federal storm sewer framework (40 CFR 122.26). The discharge point confirmed during setup is not a formality logged once, it is where every gallon of rinse water is actively directed during this standard. And if that does not hold, meaning runoff is visibly sheeting toward a street inlet or a neighboring property, stop that pass, redirect or contain with a temporary berm, and do not continue rinsing the next section until the flow path is corrected.
Wet hardscape carrying rinsed-off surfactant is slicker than wet hardscape alone. Walk the inspection perimeter on unwashed ground or grass where available rather than crossing a just-rinsed walkway, and note on the ticket any walkway that will stay slick until it fully air-dries so the office can pass that along if a walkthrough is scheduled.
The procedure
Rinse top to bottom, the reverse of the wash's bottom-to-top order. Use fresh water at moderate pressure to carry dissolved chemical down and off the wall rather than pushing runoff back up under laps and trim. The reversal matters because the wash built its wet edge from the bottom up to avoid dry streaking, and rinsing the same direction would carry the last of the dissolved chemical back over sections already cleared of it. Acceptance: no visible sheen or residue as water runs clear off the lowest course. Wrong looks like rinsing bottom to top, which drags chemical-laden runoff back up over siding already rinsed above it. Stop rule: if runoff is not running clear after two passes over a section, give it a third pass before moving to the next elevation rather than leaving it for the inspection to catch.
Contain and route wastewater to the confirmed discharge point. Direct runoff visibly toward the point set during protection setup, a vegetated area, a containment-and-vacuum setup, or an approved discharge, watching how the site's grade is actually carrying the water rather than assuming it matches the plan. Acceptance: runoff visibly reaching the intended point, not pooling toward a storm drain. Wrong looks like runoff sheeting across a driveway straight into a street inlet because nobody watched where the grade carried it once rinsing started. Stop rule: any runoff reaching an unconfirmed or prohibited point stops that pass immediately for redirection or containment; this is the operative moment for the discharge rule, not a box checked after the fact.
Uncover and re-rinse everything protected under the pre-wet standard. Remove poly sheeting and give each previously covered bed a full second rinse with plain water, beyond whatever ran off passively during the wall rinse. Acceptance: sheeting removed, a deliberate second rinse given, foliage checked for early bleaching or wilt. Wrong looks like pulling sheeting and calling the bed done without an active rinse pass of its own. Stop rule: any leaf showing bleaching, spotting, or a chemical smell gets an extended flush immediately and gets flagged on the ticket regardless of how it looks by the time the crew leaves, since some chemical injury does not show until the following days.
Confirm hardscape and vehicle-adjacent surfaces are fully rinsed, not just the siding. Rinse the driveway, walkways, and any overspray zone near a parked vehicle. Acceptance: all such surfaces rinsed clear of visible residue. Wrong looks like treating the rinse as siding-only and leaving diluted overspray to dry on a driveway or a vehicle's clear coat. Stop rule: any vehicle with visible spotting gets flagged for the customer before the crew leaves, not discovered by the customer afterward.
Walk the full perimeter and run the four-point inspection. Check, on every elevation: even coverage with no streak or haze remaining, no dry chemical residue at trim or seams, every protected item uncovered and re-rinsed, and no standing wastewater still headed for a prohibited discharge point. Do this as a slow perimeter walk at close range to the wall, not a glance from the yard, since a light haze or a missed seam reads as clean from ten feet away and shows up clearly from three. Acceptance: all four checks pass on every elevation, not a sample of the ones visible from the driveway. Wrong looks like a walk-by that skips the shaded side or the back elevation because it is out of the way. Stop rule: any elevation failing a check sends that section back to step 1 before the inspection can be signed off.
Photograph the completed job on every elevation, including anything flagged as pre-existing. Capture dated photos of all four elevations, plus any fade, chalking, or staining that did not clear and was noted during application. Acceptance: a dated photo set covering every elevation attached to the ticket. Wrong looks like photos of only the elevation that came out best. Stop rule: a job does not close without the full photo set, since it is the record that separates a pre-existing condition from wash-caused damage if a callback comes in later.
Confirm the restore-and-verify handoff back to the wash standard is complete. Check that the pool pump and irrigation controller are both restored and confirmed running per the wash standard's closing step, by name, not by assuming the other tech already handled it. Acceptance: both confirmed on the ticket. Wrong looks like a crew packing up on the assumption someone else checked. Stop rule: the ticket does not close until both are checked.
The record this produces
A rinse-and-inspection worksheet on the ticket:
- Rinse log: pass count per elevation and any elevation needing an extra pass to run clear.
- Discharge confirmation: the routing used and any redirect made mid-rinse, since a grade that behaves differently once water is actually flowing on it is worth flagging for the next crew that works this address.
- Plant re-rinse log: which beds were uncovered and re-rinsed, with any flagged bleaching or wilt.
- Four-point sign-off: pass or fail on each check, by elevation.
- Photo set: dated coverage of all four elevations plus any pre-existing condition noted.
This record is what settles a callback in one call instead of a return visit: the photo set shows what the surface looked like when the crew left, and the discharge log shows the runoff was accounted for, not guessed at.
One run of this procedure, filled in
Same two-story vinyl house from the wash standard's own worked example, moderate slope on the driveway toward the street.
- Step 1: north gable rinsed top to bottom, ran clear after two passes.
- Step 2: this step failed on the driveway-facing elevation. Runoff was reaching the street-side grade faster than expected, visibly sheeting toward the storm inlet at the curb. Stop rule taken: the pass was stopped, a temporary berm of sandbags diverted flow toward the vegetated strip along the property line, and rinsing continued once the redirect was confirmed holding.
- Step 3: the south-wall bed uncovered and given a full second rinse; no bleaching or odor noted.
- Step 4: driveway and the one parked vehicle within the radius rinsed clear, no spotting found.
- Step 5: four-point inspection run on all four elevations, all passed, including the earlier drying near-miss on the south wall, which showed no residual haze after rinsing.
- Step 6: full photo set taken and attached, including a note on the south wall's earlier dwell issue as resolved.
- Step 7: pool pump and irrigation controller both confirmed restored per the wash standard's record.
The driveway redirect is why step 2's stop rule triggers on what the water is actually doing, not on the plan made during setup: a grade that looked fine on a dry walkthrough can carry rinse water somewhere the plan did not anticipate.
