GAF Timberline HDZ Layout, Nailing, and StainGuard Plus Pattern

Why this matters

GAF Timberline HDZ is the top-selling laminated architectural shingle in North America. The LayerLock and StrikeZone features change the nailing rules from prior Timberline HD generations: the nail line is now a 1-5/8-inch-wide colored strip, double-wide compared to legacy shingles, and the warranty escalates only when the installer hits that strip with exactly the right pattern. A senior installer who learned on HD will instinctively nail too high and forfeit the WindProven Limited Wind Warranty (no wind speed limit). The GAF Master Elite certification audit also pulls nail-pattern photos on warranty claims; a wrong pattern voids both the WindProven and the StainGuard Plus algae coverage. This article documents the layout, exposure, and nailing rules per the GAF Pro Field Guide and the Timberline HDZ application instructions.

Layout - starter course and offset

GAF requires Pro-Start, WeatherBlocker, or GAF Pro-Start Eave/Rake starter strip at the eave and rakes. Generic starter (a Timberline shingle cut and inverted) is no longer accepted for the WindProven warranty; only the listed GAF starter products qualify.

Starter at the eave: align the factory adhesive bead 1/4 to 3/8 inch back from the drip edge so wind cannot lift the first course tab. At the rake, cut the starter from a full Pro-Start piece (do not improvise from cut shingles); install with the factory adhesive bead on the rake side.

First course: install full-width Timberline HDZ with the lower edge flush to the starter's lower edge. The Pro Field Guide calls a 5-5/8-inch exposure for the standard layout, giving 4 nails per shingle.

The StrikeZone nail line

The HDZ wrapper carries a 1-5/8-inch-wide blue StrikeZone band running horizontally across the upper portion of the visible face. The 4 nails per shingle (6 in high-wind zones) must land inside this band. Nails above the band miss the LayerLock common bond area and the warranty drops to the standard wind coverage (130 mph). Nails below the band penetrate the exposed butt of the shingle below and create a visible defect plus a leak risk.

Standard nailing - 4 nails per shingle:

  • One nail 1 inch in from each end, and the remaining two spaced evenly across the shingle so the four are roughly equally distributed
  • All four nails inside the StrikeZone band. Vertical position is what the warranty turns on; the horizontal dimensions are printed on the bundle wrapper and on the application instructions, and they are the number to work from rather than anything memorized off another shingle line
  • Nail head flush with the shingle, not overdriven (overdriven cuts the mat)

High wind nailing - 6 nails per shingle: use 6 nails on any field installation in basic wind speed of 130 mph and above, whenever the WindProven warranty is being registered, and on any slope steep enough that the application instructions call for special fastening (the mansard rule). Add the two intermediate nails inside the StrikeZone band so all six end up evenly spaced across the shingle. When in doubt, 6 nails is never the wrong answer on an HDZ roof; 4 nails on a roof that needed 6 is a claim denial.

Fastener specification

Per GAF application instructions:

  • 11- or 12-gauge corrosion-resistant roofing nail
  • 3/8-inch minimum head diameter
  • Length to penetrate the deck a minimum 3/4 inch, or fully through the deck if less than 3/4-inch thick
  • Hot-dip galvanized, aluminum, or stainless

Air-gun pressure must be set so the nail head sits flush, not crushing the mat or standing proud. A common field failure is overdriven nails on the first cool morning when the shingles are stiff; check the first three shingles of every run with a thumbnail-flush test.

Staples are prohibited. Coil nailers are acceptable; stick nailers are acceptable.

Pattern - 5-inch or 6-inch offset

Timberline HDZ uses a random offset pattern. The GAF-recommended starting offset is:

  • Course 1: full shingle
  • Course 2: 5 inches removed from the left
  • Course 3: 11 inches removed
  • Course 4: 17 inches removed
  • Course 5: 23 inches removed
  • Course 6: 29 inches removed
  • Course 7: full shingle, then repeat

This gives a pseudo-random appearance and keeps every end joint well clear of the end joint in the course below. The controlling rule is horizontal, not vertical: an end joint in one course must not land within 4 inches of the end joint in the course beneath it. Stacked or near-stacked joints are both a water path and the thing that reads as a stripe down the roof from the driveway.

Hip and ridge

Use GAF Seal-A-Ridge, Ridglass, TimberTex, or Z-Ridge for hip and ridge. Generic field shingles cut into hip pieces are not accepted for the WindProven warranty. Each cap product has its own exposure; take it off that product's wrapper, because they are not interchangeable and mixing the exposure from one onto another leaves you short or long at the end of the run.

Use 2 nails per cap, one in from each side. The nail always goes ABOVE the exposure line, so the next cap covers it. If the exposure is 8 inches, the nail sits above 8 inches from the butt, not below it. A nail placed inside the exposed portion is a visible fastener and a leak, and it is the most common ridge callback there is. The manufacturer prints the exact setback on the wrapper; measure the first cap of every run and then work off that mark.

For ridge vent installations, fasten the cap through both the vent and the deck with a 2-1/2-inch nail; verify penetration into solid deck on each.

StainGuard Plus and StainGuard Pro algae coverage

The StainGuard Plus and StainGuard Pro coverage runs 25 years from the install date. The coverage requires the entire field to be Timberline HDZ with the StainGuard Plus or Pro stamp on every bundle. Mixing in a non-StainGuard bundle voids the algae warranty for the entire roof, not just the affected section. Verify bundle labels at delivery and reject any non-stamped bundles.

WindProven Limited Wind Warranty registration

The WindProven warranty (no wind speed limit) requires:

  • LayerLock-labeled Timberline HDZ in the field
  • 4 qualifying GAF accessories, drawn from these five categories: starter strip, ridge cap, leak barrier, attic ventilation, and roof deck protection (underlayment). Four of the five, not all five
  • GAF certification (Master Elite or Certified contractor)
  • Registration within 45 days of completion at gaf.com/warranty

Short of four qualifying accessories, or without the contractor certification, the warranty falls back to a tier carrying a 130-mph wind limit. Confirm the current accessory list on the warranty terms document before you promise WindProven in a proposal; GAF revises the qualifying list.
