Shingle Repair and Blend-In Standard
Purpose
A spot repair puts new material into a field that is already sealed, already weathered, and already carrying whatever wind rating the manufacturer tested. This procedure guarantees that every seal broken to get the old shingle out is re-established before the crew leaves, that no fastener ends up where water reaches it, and that the customer hears what the repair will look like first.
Skip the resealing and the next moderate gust takes the repair plus the two courses above it. Skip the color conversation and the repair is technically perfect and commercially a complaint.
Scope
Covers spot replacement of three-tab and laminated architectural asphalt shingles in an existing field, on walkable steep slopes, residential and small commercial: the temperature window, breaking and re-establishing the sealant bond, fastener placement, and material selection for appearance.
Does not cover full slope replacement, low-slope membrane repair, finding the leak by water testing, or stopping active entry under the emergency tarp SOP - four SOPs of their own. Boot, valley, ridge, chimney and skylight details have their own SOPs here and are not repaired by dropping a shingle over them.

The seal is what you are actually repairing
Fasteners resist gravity. The factory sealant strip, which bonds each shingle to the face of the one below, is what resists uplift, and it is in place during the wind-resistance testing that ASTM D3161 and ASTM D7158 classes are published from. An unsealed shingle in a sealed field is not weaker, it is loose.
The shingle you want out is bonded on its face to the course above and nailed under that same course, so you cannot remove one shingle: you break the seal above, lift, pull the exposed fasteners, break the target's own seal, and slide it out. Every seal broken is a seal owed back, including on shingles you did not replace.
Temperature decides whether that is possible today. Cold mat cracks when lifted, and the crack runs across the shingle you were saving. Hot mat scuffs and sheds granules under a knee. Work to a surface temperature of roughly 45 to 85 F read at the work area - the shop default, which the shingle manufacturer's instructions override where they state a window - never to air temperature on a phone: a slope in sun runs well above ambient and a north slope in the same hour runs below it.
Procedure
1. Set access and fall protection before anyone is on the plane. Access and anchorage run under the ladder setup standard and the fall protection setup SOP; this step requires only that both are done. Acceptance: ladder tied off and extended above the eave per that standard, every person connected before stepping off it. Wrong looks like a two-shingle repair treated as too small to tie off. Stop rule: nobody goes onto the plane until anchorage is set. Hazard: this is construction work under 29 CFR 1926, where the residential fall protection duty triggers at 6 ft, 1926.501(b)(13), with arrest criteria at 1926.502(d).
2. Read the surface temperature and decide whether today is the day. Take a reading at the damage and at one spot you will kneel on. Acceptance: a recorded number inside the 45 to 85 F default, or the manufacturer's window where the instructions state one, with the time it was taken. Wrong looks like an air temperature quoted from the truck. Stop rule: below the window, wait for sun on that slope and re-read, or reschedule and say so; above it, move to a shaded slope or return in the morning. Hazard: a hot asphalt surface scuffs, and the loosened granules are what makes it slick, so the material damage and the footing loss arrive together.
3. Confirm this is a repair and not a slope. Count the damage, walk the whole plane, and read what the field is doing - granules in the gutter, exposed mat, tabs that lift with no resistance where nobody complained. Acceptance: a damaged count, a bounding area, and a written slope condition note. Wrong looks like patching five shingles where the seal has failed generally. Stop rule: if tabs lift by hand with no resistance well outside the damage, the repair is quoted as a temporary measure, stated in writing, or declined. Hazard, commercial: a spot repair on a finished field makes your shop the last party to touch the roof, which is who gets blamed next.
4. Source the material and set the appearance expectation. Ask for leftover bundles from the original install and use them. Otherwise match product line and color name, then pull sound shingles from a low-visibility slope, install the new bundle there, and use the pulled shingles in the visible repair. Acceptance: the customer has been told, before work starts, that current-run material reads lighter or darker against a weathered field and closes over one to two seasons. Wrong looks like the crew finding the mismatch on the ladder and saying nothing. Stop rule: no match for a discontinued product means stop and present options in writing.
5. Break the seal above, then on the target. Slide a flat bar along the sealant strip of the course above rather than prying at one point, and lift only enough to expose fastener heads. Acceptance: the course above is free across the repair width plus one shingle each end, with no cracked mat. Wrong looks like a bar levered under one corner and a shingle torn in a curve. Stop rule: the first cracked shingle stops the lifting - re-read surface temperature, and add that shingle to the replacement count rather than leaving cracked mat in the field. Hazard: if heat is used to soften a stubborn seal, asphalt releases fume when heated and the felt beneath will ignite, so keep the heat moving, keep it off the underlayment, and keep a charged extinguisher on the plane, not in the truck.
6. Pull the fasteners, do not drive them down. Back the nails out with the bar. Acceptance: every fastener holding the target is out, counted, and pouched. Wrong looks like a nail tapped flush and left, a hole in the underlayment directly above the repair. Stop rule: a fastener that will not release comes out with the shingle cut around it, and the hole gets a self-adhered flashing patch before the new shingle covers it, recorded in the notes. Hazard: loose nails roll to the eave and land in a driveway, so they go in the pouch as they are pulled; closeout is under the debris and nail sweep SOP.
7. Set the replacement and fasten on the manufacturer's nail line. Match the neighbors' exposure, then fasten on the line the wrapper for that product shows, at the count it specifies for the wind application at this address. Acceptance: fasteners flush, not through the mat, all inside the nail line, at the specified count per shingle. Wrong looks like a fastener above the nail line, which the next course no longer covers. Stop rule: a fastener that spins or will not draw tight means unsound deck, so open the area to find how far it runs. Hazard: a nailer drives into whatever is in front of it, so the hose stays up-slope and nobody works below the tool.
8. Hand seal every shingle you unsealed, then prove the bond. Apply asphalt roof cement conforming to ASTM D4586 in the pattern and quantity the shingle instructions specify, press the tab down, and once it has set tug each tab upward at its leading edge. Acceptance: dab count equals shingles unsealed - every shingle lifted and every shingle set, counted once each - times the specified spots per shingle, no squeeze-out at the butt edge, and every tab tested resists and returns flat. Wrong looks like a continuous bead across the strip, which traps water and blisters the tab, or a tab that lifts with no resistance because the dab missed the mating face. Stop rule: any failing tab is re-cemented and re-tested before anyone comes off the roof. Hazard: this step puts the field's uplift resistance back and the tug check is the only evidence it returned, so the roof is not released to weather until the count clears; rain before cure means covering the band under the emergency tarp SOP. Roof cement carries three routes at once: vapor is an inhalation hazard, so work upwind and never in a closed attic; the resin is a skin and eye hazard, so wear nitrile gloves and eye protection; the solvent is flammable, so nothing heats or smokes near an open pail.
The record this produces
A repair entry carrying the surface temperature and the time it was read; shingles damaged, replaced including collateral, and lifted but retained; where the replacement material came from and whether it is original-run stock; fasteners per shingle and which instruction set that number; the dab pattern and total count; the tug result per tab; and any soft deck found at step 7 with its extent.
The office reads the appearance line when the customer calls about color: that conversation is either in the file or it did not happen. The estimator reads the step 3 slope note when this address calls again, because two spot repairs on one slope in a year is a replacement conversation, not a third repair.
Worked pass: five shingles off a 6:12 laminated slope, nine-year-old roof
Wind damage on the south slope, five architectural shingles gone from one course. Crew on site 8:15 am, step 1 complete.
Step 2 reads 41 F at the damage, below the 45 F floor, so the lead notes it and starts the ground walk. Step 3: no meaningful granule loss in the gutter, tabs elsewhere resist a hand pull, so this is a repair. Step 4: no leftover bundles, product line current, color name matches, and the customer agrees to pull five sound shingles from the detached garage slope and put the new bundle there.
At 9:05 the crew starts lifting anyway, on the argument that the sun is now on the slope. Step 5 fails. The first lift cracks the mat across a good shingle in the course above, and a second cracks two lifts later. The stop rule fires: lifting stops, the surface re-reads 43 F, the crew waits. At 11:20 it reads 58 F and work resumes with no further cracking.
Counts after step 5: five damaged shingles in the lower course; six lifted in the course above (the five directly overlapping, plus one where the offset lands); two of those six cracked. Replaced is five plus two, so seven. Lifted and retained is six minus two, so four.
Step 6: nineteen fasteners pulled and pouched, one cut around with a flashing patch over the head. Step 7: this wrapper specifies four fasteners per shingle standard and six high-wind, and the address sits outside the jurisdiction's high-wind area, so four. Seven shingles at four is twenty-eight fasteners. Step 8: the same wrapper specifies four spots per shingle, and eleven shingles were unsealed (seven new plus four retained), so forty-four dabs. Eleven tabs tugged, eleven hold.
The two collateral shingles are the lesson. They came from lifting below the temperature window, they raised material use forty percent over what the complaint described, and nobody argues about them later because the failed step and its stop rule are in the file.
