Commercial Effluent Filter Selection and Cleanout Frequency
Why this matters
The effluent filter is the cheapest insurance against drainfield failure on the market. A filter costing a small fraction of one pump-out, sized correctly and serviced on schedule, keeps the suspended solids that escape a septic tank from reaching the drainfield, where they bridge soil pores and biomat-choke the infiltrative surface. On commercial systems (restaurants, schools, RV parks, multi-family) the loading rates, the grease pass-through, and the surge volumes make filter selection critical. Two numbers decide the filter, and techs routinely read only one. Slot size sets what gets through. The cartridge's flow rating, which is a function of its total open slot area, sets how long it runs before it blinds over. A 4 in residential cartridge rated for 800 gpd will blind inside a week on a 5,000 gpd restaurant no matter what its slot size is, because the cartridge is too small; a commercial cartridge at the same 1/16 in slot but rated for 5,000 gpd runs the interval. Get the rating right first, then pick the slot. Going the other way, a 1/8 in commercial cartridge on a daycare may never clog and still coat the drainfield in three years, because the slot is passing what it was always going to pass.
How effluent filters work
The filter is a slotted cartridge sized to retain particles above a target dimension. Effluent flows through the cartridge slots from outside to inside, then up and out of the tank through the outlet tee. Solids accumulate on the outside face of the cartridge; once flow through the slots is restricted, the liquid level upstream of the filter rises and triggers either:
- A high-level alarm (commercial systems with float switches in the outlet tee)
- A plumbing backup at the building (residential systems without alarms)
The filter does not catch dissolved solids or biological oxygen demand (BOD). It catches suspended solids by mechanical sieving.
Slot sizes and what they do
Manufacturer slot sizes vary; the common commercial range is 1/32 in to 1/4 in. Tighter is better for drainfield protection but increases service frequency.
- 1/32 in (800 micron): used on sand filter / ATU effluent polishing. Service interval days to weeks under commercial load.
- 1/16 in (1,600 micron): used on advanced treatment unit (ATU) outlets and on residential drainfields with sensitive soils.
- 1/8 in (3,200 micron): the most common commercial gravity-drainfield filter. Captures most strings, hair, and synthetic fiber while passing fine particulate.
- 1/4 in (6,400 micron): minimal protection; used as a screen against gross debris only.
EPA Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Manual (EPA/625/R-00/008) recommends maximum effluent TSS of 80 mg/L to a conventional drainfield; tighter targets (under 30 mg/L) for pressure distribution. The filter is one part of meeting that target; tank capacity and HRT are the other.
Sizing by daily flow and use type
Manufacturer sizing data for the three major commercial filters:
Polylok PL-525 / PL-122
Polylok PL-122 (4 in outlet, 1/16 in slot) rated for up to 1,500 gpd domestic strength. Polylok PL-525 (6 in outlet) rated for up to 5,000 gpd. Above 5,000 gpd, parallel filters or a stainless commercial cartridge (Polylok PL-625 series) are required.
Sim/Tech STF
Sim/Tech STF-100 series (4 in, 1/16 in slot) is rated up to 1,000 gpd. STF-150 / STF-200 commercial series scale to 7,500 gpd with 1/8 in or 1/16 in slots.
Zabel A1800 / A1801
Zabel A1800 (4 in) and A1801 (6 in) are the most common commercial cartridges, sized to 4,500 gpd at 1/16 in. The Zabel "Big Foot" extends to 30,000 gpd for school and resort applications.
A grease-laden flow (restaurant, cafeteria) requires upsizing by 50 to 100 percent over the domestic-strength rating because grease accumulates on the cartridge faster than solids.
Cleanout frequency by use type
There is no universal interval; the EPA manual recommends inspection at every pumping event (minimum every 3 to 5 years for residential) and adjustment based on observed loading. Commercial cleanout frequencies that field experience supports:
- Restaurant with adequate grease interceptor upstream: every 3 months
- Restaurant without grease interceptor: monthly (and the system is failing for other reasons)
- School (academic year): every 4 months
- Daycare: every 6 months
- Office building, retail: annually
- Multi-family residential (8 to 24 units): every 6 months
- RV park / campground: every 3 months during peak season
The cleanout is a hose-down with a garden hose into the inlet side of the tank (so debris washes back to the inlet baffle, not to the outlet). Do not pressure-wash; high pressure damages the slots. Confirm the filter cartridge is fully seated and the alarm float (if equipped) is free before closing the riser.
A commercial system with no effluent filter alarm and a clogged filter will back up sewage into the lowest fixture in the building, typically a floor drain in a basement or a mop sink in a janitor closet. For restaurants and food-service tenants, the health department reports the backup as a Critical Violation. Put a high-level alarm on every commercial filter and wire it to a panel somebody actually occupies. Most state on-site sewage programs require an alarm on commercial and non-conventional systems; check the rule your AHJ enforces for the exact trigger and location, because NSF/ANSI 46 evaluates the component and does not by itself impose the installation requirement.
Riser and access requirements
Commercial filters require access. Most state on-site sewage codes require a 24 in diameter riser to grade with a watertight lid (typical brands: Polylok, Tuf-Tite, Orenco). The lid should be secured with stainless screws or a child-resistant latch; gravity-only lids in publicly accessible areas are a safety hazard. The State of Texas TCEQ 285.32 and similar codes in most states require the riser to be locked or weighted such that a child cannot remove the lid.
Alarms and telemetry
Float-switch alarms in the outlet tee (set above the filter outlet but below the inlet pipe invert) are the standard commercial detection method. Panel options:
- SJE-Rhombus Tank Alert series: 120 VAC visual and audible alarm
- Orenco MVP-IFC: float-switch panel with cellular telemetry for unattended commercial sites
Commercial systems serving over 5,000 gpd should have remote telemetry per EPA guidance and per most state O&M requirements; a high-level alarm that sounds in an empty building at 2 AM has no operational value.
