Common pitfalls
These are the ones the contractor makes, not the homeowner.
Marking the field from memory. The tank lid is not the field, and the field almost never runs where people assume. Pull the as-built or the permit drawing, then locate and physically mark the tank, the distribution box, and the line runs before anyone talks about where a tree goes.
Giving a setback number without naming the species. A distance that is comfortable for a small ornamental is nowhere near enough for a willow, poplar, or silver maple. Tie every distance you state to the specific tree in front of you.
Forgetting irrigation and roof runoff. A new sprinkler zone, a re-routed downspout, or a regraded patio that sheds toward the field adds hydraulic load the system was never sized for. Water added to a drainfield does more damage more quickly than roots do, and it is the thing nobody thinks to mention.
Approving added cover. Raised beds, a few inches of new topsoil, decorative rock over fabric, or plastic sheeting under mulch all cut oxygen and evaporation at the soil treatment area. Say no to added depth over the field, and say no to any impermeable layer.
Burying the risers to make the yard look better. It costs the customer a dig on the next service and it usually happens right after you finish explaining how important access is.
Advising verbally only. If the recommendation is not on the ticket with a simple sketch and the marked distances, the customer's landscaper will never hear it, and the argument afterward is yours.
Talking only to the homeowner. Get the landscape contractor on the phone or on site. Relayed instructions get simplified into exactly the version that damages the system.
