When the project changes scope mid-permit

If the design changes:

  1. Stop work on the affected portion. Continuing to build to a design the permit no longer matches is how a job ends up dug up at your cost
  2. Document the condition that forced the change, with photos, measurements, and the date. Rock at depth, a water table higher than the soil report showed, an undisclosed well, a buried utility, or an owner-requested change all get recorded the same way
  3. Get the designer or engineer to revise the drawing. A field change to a permitted design is still a design change, and it needs the same signature the original had
  4. Submit the revision to the permitting authority before you build it. Some jurisdictions handle minor changes as a field revision with the inspector on site; others require a formal amendment and a new review. Ask which one applies, do not assume the faster path
  5. Get the approval in writing, even when the inspector verbally agrees on site. A note in the file with the inspector's name and date is the minimum; an amended permit is better
  6. Issue a change order to the customer covering the revised scope, the cost, and the schedule impact, and get it signed before work resumes
  7. Update the as-built to match what was actually installed, not what was originally drawn. The as-built is what the next contractor and the next buyer will rely on

The expensive version of this is discovering at final inspection that the installed system does not match the permitted design. Every step above exists to prevent that one conversation.
