Crown Cleaning and Deadwooding Technique
Why this matters
Dead wood does not warn you before it lets go. Live wood flexes and gives you feedback through the saddle or the saw; a dead limb can snap clean off from a load as small as wind vibration or the shake of the climber's own movement a branch away, with nobody touching it at all. The industry calls a loose or hung dead limb a widowmaker for a reason, and the single highest-consequence failure in this whole procedure is working beneath or beside one without ever having spotted it. Before any saw runs, the safety action is a slow visual sweep of the canopy above and around the intended work path, and anything hung or loose gets addressed before cutting starts nearby, not after.
What this covers and what it does not
This covers the A300 "Clean" pruning objective: identifying and removing dead, dying, broken, and hung material from the crown. It does not cover reducing or thinning live wood to change the tree's size or density; that procedure, including the three-cut method and branch-collar cut placement this article assumes you already know, lives in Crown Reduction and Thinning Procedures. The material is different, dead versus live, and so is the hazard profile: dead wood is brittle and unpredictable in how it releases, where live wood generally behaves the way its flex and grain suggest it will.
Spot the hangers first, they are the highest-consequence miss
A hanger is a broken limb caught in the surrounding branches rather than resting on the ground, held only by friction, a forked crotch, or tangled bark, with no live wood fiber holding it in place at all. It can release under a load as small as wind, a nearby cut's vibration, or the climber brushing past it, and it releases without the warning a live branch under stress usually gives. Before climbing into the work area, scan from the ground for the visual cues: a limb hanging at an unnatural angle, a butt end that is broken and splintered rather than cut, bark stripped along the point where it separated, or a piece visibly resting across other branches instead of attached to the trunk at all.
Any hanger identified inside or above the day's work path gets resolved before any other cutting happens near it, either by rigging and lowering it deliberately or by rerouting the day's work to avoid triggering it until it can be addressed on its own. Treat every hanger as loaded until it is down and controlled; a hanger that "has probably been up there for months, it's fine" is the exact reasoning that precedes most struck-by incidents from deadwooding work.
Identify true deadwood versus dormant or shaded live wood
Confirm a branch is actually dead before cutting it as deadwood, since interior shaded branches on a healthy tree can look sparse or slow-growing without being dead, and removing them as if they were pushes the visit's total live-tissue removal toward the dose limit covered in ANSI A300 Pruning Standard Interpretation without anyone tracking it. Three field checks, used together rather than any one alone: bark retention (dead wood typically has loose, flaking, or already-missing bark where live wood holds bark tight to the cambium), a scratch test (a thumbnail or knife tip through the outer bark on a small branch shows moist green tissue on live wood and dry brown tissue on dead wood), and a flex test on smaller material (live wood bends before it fails, dead wood snaps abruptly with little give).
Species matters here and the check that works on one tree can mislead on another. Some species hold tight-looking bark on wood that died only recently, and some retain live-looking bark color on genuinely shaded, low-vigor interior branches that are not dead at all. When a branch does not clearly pass or fail the three checks together, treat it as live and leave it, since the cost of leaving a borderline branch is small and the cost of an unnecessary cut compounds against the same dose limit a reduction or thinning pass on the same visit would also be drawing from.
Sequence the work top-down within the canopy
Work from the highest point in the crown downward, not the reverse. Cut and dislodged material from work higher in the tree falls through and past the zones you have not yet reached, rather than piling debris hazards into a section you already cleared and now have to climb back through. It also matches the climber's natural descent path, so the last cuts of the day are made on the way down rather than requiring a return climb through a canopy already loaded with loose material from earlier cuts.
Extraction technique for a hung or lodged limb
Never cut the branch that is currently supporting a hung piece from below it; that drops the hung piece uncontrolled onto whatever, or whoever, is beneath its release path the moment the support lets go. Three legitimate techniques, chosen by size and position: rig the hung piece directly, tie in a line to the piece itself and lower it deliberately with the same rigging discipline used on any other cut section; work it free by hand or with a pole from a position clearly outside its drop line, appropriate only for small, light material where the climber's own stance is not beneath or beside the release path; or, when neither of those is achievable safely from the current position, stop, clear the ground below, and bring in the access or rigging the piece actually requires rather than forcing it loose. Prying, pulling, or shaking a stuck limb free while standing under or beside its own release path is the failure mode that turns a routine hanger into an incident; if the piece will not come free with a controlled technique, it has just told you the technique needs to change, not that more force is the answer.
Sizing the cut: hand-toss, drop, or rig
Small dead branches that will not injure a ground worker on impact can be hand-tossed clear of the drop zone, called down verbally to the ground crew before release the same way a cut piece is announced on any other job. Slightly larger pieces that are still light enough to fall without a tag line but heavy enough to hurt someone can be dropped in a controlled manner onto a cleared landing, again only after a ground-crew "all clear." When cleaning finds something bigger than cleaning
Deadwooding regularly turns up a defect that is not itself deadwood, a cavity opening where a dead limb sheared off years ago, an included-bark seam on a codominant union nearby, or a soft spot that sounds hollow under the mallet. Worked example: a red oak with three seasons of accumulated deadwood
A mature red oak has not been maintained in three growing seasons and shows visible deadwood scattered through the upper and mid canopy. Before climbing, the ground scan turns up one clear hanger high in the crown, a broken limb resting across two live branches with no attachment of its own, splintered at the break point and hanging at an angle inconsistent with anything still growing there.
The climber sets up to rig that hanger first, before any other cutting begins nearby, tying in a line and lowering it in a controlled drop rather than dislodging it and letting it fall loose through the canopy. Working top-down from there, most of the remaining deadwood is small enough to hand-toss after a ground "all clear," confirmed against the bark-retention and scratch-test checks on a few borderline branches that turn out, on closer look, to be shaded but live interior growth, left in place rather than cut. Partway down, one dead limb's removal exposes a cavity opening at its base that was hidden by the limb itself while it was still attached. Rather than treating the opening as incidental, the climber flags it, photographs it, and stops deadwooding that section, since the cavity now needs the sounding and probing technique that belongs to a dedicated inspection pass, not a judgment call made mid-cleaning.
Verify the crown before you climb down
Before descending, do a second visual sweep from the position you are about to leave, since some deadwood reads more clearly from directly beneath a branch, looking up, than it does from within the canopy beside it. Confirm every piece dropped or rigged during the visit was called down and cleared by the ground crew, not assumed clear because the last one was. Confirm every hanger found during the day was fully resolved, rigged down or hand-cleared, rather than shifted into a new position that looks stable but was never actually tested. Once on the ground, scan the crown one final time from below; a hanger relocated but not removed during the climb is often invisible from inside the canopy and only visible from the ground looking up.
