Backflow Prevention Reference

Why this matters

Backflow contaminates potable water systems. Code requires backflow preventers at specific locations; annual testing required commercial. The plumber who understands devices + install + testing protects customer + serves commercial accounts. This is the field card.

Backflow definition

Backflow: reverse flow of contaminated water back into potable supply.

Two types:

  • Backpressure: downstream pressure exceeds supply pressure (boiler, pump). Pushes contaminated water back.
  • Backsiphonage: negative pressure in supply (water main break, fire hydrant use). Suction pulls contaminated water back.

Cross-connection: any direct OR indirect connection between potable + non-potable water.

Hazard categories

High hazard (Health Hazard): sewage + drainage; irrigation with fertilizer/chemicals; commercial industrial; boiler with chemicals; lab + medical. Low hazard (Pollutional Hazard): boiler without chemicals; cooling tower; residential irrigation without chemicals. No hazard: drinking fountain.

Backflow preventer types (sorted by protection)

Air gap (highest): physical separation; supply + effluent never touch. RPZ (Reduced Pressure Zone): high-protection; commercial + irrigation with chemicals; dual checks + relief valve. Double-check (DC/DCV): medium; residential + low-hazard commercial. PVB (Pressure Vacuum Breaker): medium; backsiphonage-only; common irrigation. AVB (Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker): lower; hose bib + showerhead. Vacuum breaker: simplest; on hose bib.

Where required (per IPC + UPC + local code)

Always: boiler feed, irrigation, fire sprinkler, commercial dishwasher + cooling tower, pool/spa fill, carbonated beverage equipment, RO unit (some jurisdictions), solar water heater, chemical feed equipment. Often: hose bibs (integrated vacuum breaker newer), toilet auxiliary fill (anti-siphon ballcock). Annual testing required (commercial + most residential irrigation): certified backflow tester.

RPZ (Reduced Pressure Zone)

Two independent check valves with reduced-pressure relief chamber between. Relief valve opens if either check fails; visible discharge alerts to failure. Install above grade with drain location. Highest protection; required for high-hazard cross-connections. Annual testing required. Brands: Watts (909), Wilkins (375), Conbraco (4040). Sizes 1/2" - 1-1/4"+ (residential 3/4" - 1" common). Cost install.

Double-check valve (DCV)

Two independent checks: testable.

Less protection than RPZ: lower hazard only.

No external discharge: contained.

Use: residential irrigation, boiler feed (no chemicals), low-hazard commercial.

PVB (Pressure Vacuum Breaker)

Spring + check: opens to atmosphere on negative pressure.

Must install 12" above highest sprinkler head: prevents water settling in valve.

Backsiphonage only: doesn't protect against backpressure.

Common residential irrigation: less expensive than RPZ.

Hose bib vacuum breaker

Threaded onto hose bib OR integrated: prevents siphonage of hose water back into supply.

Required per IPC: outdoor faucets in many jurisdictions.

Boiler backflow (chemical-treated)

RPZ required: boiler chemicals could enter potable supply.

Air gap option (some installations): physical separation; complex but ultimate protection.

Pool + spa fill

Air gap fill (preferred): spout above maximum water level.

RPZ if direct connection: when fill line is below water level OR connected directly.

Common service mistake: customer connects hose to pool; submerged end + pool chemicals back into supply.

Annual backflow testing (commercial + irrigation)

Required by water authority per state + local code. Certified tester required. Procedure: test gauge on test ports; verify check valves + relief valve operating. Documentation submitted to water authority. Failed device: repair OR replace + retest. Cost test.

Installation requirements

Above-grade: outdoor RPZ; visible.

Drain location: RPZ relief valve drains when activated.

Freeze protection: insulated cover; bury-able OR vault.

Accessibility: for testing.

Sign / label: required by some jurisdictions.

Test cocks (manufacturer-installed): small valves for tester connection.

Common backflow problems

Constant discharge from RPZ: failed check valve; replace internal components OR full unit.

Failed annual test: typically check valve worn; rebuild OR replace.

Frozen + cracked: install insulation OR relocate; replace housing.

Hose bib without VB: code violation; install vacuum breaker.

Pool fill without protection: enforcement issue.

Irrigation without backflow: code violation; install required device.

Service workflow

1. Identify device + protection level required.

2. Verify proper installation: above grade, drain, freeze protection.

3. Functional test: visual + flow test.

4. Annual test (certified): with test gauge.

5. Document: pass / fail + report to authority.

6. Repair / replace if failed.

7. Retest after repair.

Repair kits

RPZ rebuild kit: replaces internal seats + springs; less than new unit.

Check valve replacement: individual valve repair.

Relief valve service: rare; usually replaced with full unit.

Certification + license

Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester: state OR water-authority certified.

Coursework + exam + experience: typical requirements.

Annual recertification: typical.

Test gauge: required equipment; certified annually.

Common locations service techs encounter

Lawn sprinkler: PVB OR DCV at main valve.

Boiler: DCV (no chemicals) OR RPZ (with chemicals).

RO system: backflow at supply (some jurisdictions).

Fire sprinkler: RPZ at building entry.

Carbonated beverage: dual-check on supply line.

Commercial dishwasher: RPZ on supply.

Customer education

Why required: protects entire water supply from contamination.

Annual testing: critical for code compliance.

Don't disable: even if leak; repair properly.

Freeze protection: customer keeps insulated.

Pool / spa fill: explain air gap + hazard.

Hose discharge: don't submerge garden hose in any liquid + leave on; backsiphonage risk.

Common service-call scenarios

"Backflow keeps dripping": RPZ failed; needs rebuild OR replace.

"Backflow test failed": rebuild kit + retest; OR replace.

"Frozen backflow + leaking": thaw, inspect, repair / replace.

"New irrigation install": PVB OR DCV per local code.

"Carbonated beverage equipment install": dual-check OR RPZ per beverage type.

Common backflow mistakes

Plugging or capping a discharging relief port. This is the one that gets people hurt and gets licenses pulled. A discharging RPZ is a device telling you a check has failed. Cap the port and you have converted a working safety device into a straight cross-connection with no warning left. Rebuild it or replace it.

Putting an RPZ in a pit or below grade. The relief has to discharge to atmosphere with an air gap. A submerged relief port is not protection, it is a suction path. RPZ goes above grade with a drain that can carry full discharge.

Setting a PVB below the highest downstream head. The device only works when it sits above everything it protects. Set too low, it holds water in the body, fails to open, and freezes.

Installing backwards. Every device has a flow arrow. Backwards installs pass a visual and fail everything else.

Choosing the device by price instead of hazard. A double check where the hazard is a health hazard is a code violation and a liability. Chemical injection, fertilizer, sewage, boilers with treatment, and medical or lab connections are RPZ work.

No drain sized for actual discharge. Relief discharge is not a drip. Techs put RPZ units in basements and mechanical rooms over a floor drain that cannot take the flow, or over no drain at all, and the first failure floods the room.

Leaving debris in the line. New construction and main work push sand and scale into the checks. Flush the line before setting the device, or your first annual test fails and you eat the rebuild.

Excess pipe dope or tape. Fragments migrate into the seats and hold checks open.

No isolation and no union. Every device needs a way to be shut off and removed for testing and rebuild. Hard-piping one in guarantees a bigger job next year.

Skipping freeze protection. An outdoor device that splits over winter is a callback and a flood. Insulated enclosure, drain-down, or relocate.

Leaving test cocks open or loose after a test. Small leak, big nuisance, and it fails the visual.

Testing with an uncalibrated gauge or an expired certification. The report is only worth the tester's credential behind it. Keep the gauge calibration current and the certification current.

Not filing the report. In most jurisdictions the test result goes to the water purveyor or the local authority on their schedule. A test performed and never filed still shows the customer as non-compliant, and they find out by enforcement letter.

Not telling the customer the device exists. Homeowners disable, bury, landscape over, and remove devices they were never told about. Point it out and log its location at install.
