Why this matters
Major appliances fail in predictable patterns. Knowing the most common failure modes per appliance type lets you diagnose quickly + recommend repair vs replacement decisions. This is the field card.
Refrigerator failures

Common diagnostic approach
For any appliance:
- Customer's specific complaint
- Reproduce the problem
- Check power + connections
- Verify safety devices (overload, fuse, switch)
- Check most-common failure for that complaint
- Test components
- Identify failed part
- Repair OR recommend replacement
Customer education
Maintenance prevents failures:
- Dryer vent cleaning (fire prevention)

- Washer hose replacement (every 5-7 years)

Pricing service
Diagnostic fee first, always. Charge for the trip and the diagnosis as a separate line. Many shops credit it toward the repair if the customer approves the work that same visit. That policy converts diagnostics into repairs and still protects you when the customer declines.
Flat rate beats time and materials on appliances. Build a price per repair (igniter, drain pump, lid switch, heating element) that includes labor, the part, and the second trip if the part has to be ordered. The customer gets one number up front, and a slow job does not punish them or you. Time and materials only fits genuinely unpredictable work: intermittent electrical faults, water damage, chasing a leak.
Price the parts return path in. A meaningful share of appliance jobs require an ordered part and a return visit. If your flat rate assumes one trip, every parts job loses money. Either bake the second trip into the flat rate or quote a stated return-visit charge before you order.
Quote before you turn a wrench past diagnosis. Diagnose, then present the number, then get an authorization. On a phone-quote request, give a range tied to the likely failures for that symptom and be explicit that it is not final until you have it open.
Know your walk-away line. When the quoted repair passes roughly half the cost of comparable new equipment, or the machine is past its expected lifespan, say so plainly and charge only the diagnostic. Customers remember the tech who told them not to spend the money.
Standing items to price separately: after-hours and weekend calls, haul-away of the old unit, stacked-unit or built-in removal labor, and any job requiring a second body to move the machine.
Review the flat-rate book at least annually. Part costs move, your labor cost moves, and a price list built three years ago is quietly running some repairs at a loss.
