Common Drain Cleaning Approaches Reference

Why this matters

Drain clogs are among the most common plumbing service calls. Different clogs need different approaches; wrong approach can damage pipes OR waste time. The tech who knows the right tool for each clog handles efficiently. This is the field card.

Drain clog types

Hair + soap (bathroom):

  • Slow building over time
  • Affects tub, shower, lavatory
  • Often near the trap
  • Easy clearance usually

Grease (kitchen):

  • Cooled grease solidifies
  • Builds layers in pipe
  • Restricts flow over time
  • Difficult to clear

Food (kitchen):

  • Down disposal
  • Sometimes oversized particles
  • Often combined with grease

Foreign objects (toilets):

  • Toys
  • Toothbrushes
  • Excessive paper
  • Feminine products
  • Wipes (huge problem)

Tree roots (main line / lateral):

  • Roots find moisture
  • Grow into joints
  • Major clog
  • Recurring without root treatment

Mineral buildup (older pipes):

  • Scale + corrosion
  • Reduces pipe diameter
  • Slow flow without specific blockage

Collapsed pipe (severe):

  • Pipe physically damaged
  • Won't clear with snaking
  • Needs replacement OR spot repair

Tools for drain cleaning

Plunger:

  • Simple; first try
  • Effective for shallow clogs
  • Sink plunger (cup) vs toilet (flanged)

Hand auger / snake (25-50 ft):

  • Cable with cutting head
  • Hand-cranked
  • For sinks, tubs, toilets
  • Cheap; effective for most

Drum machine (50-100 ft):

  • Electric-powered
  • Larger cable
  • For main drains
  • Common service tool

Sectional cable:

  • Joined sections of cable
  • Heavy duty
  • Larger drains
  • Old-school

Jetter (hydro jetter):

  • High-pressure water (1,500-4,000+ PSI)
  • Cuts grease, scours pipe
  • Most effective for grease
  • More expensive equipment

Camera (sewer camera):

  • Visual inspection
  • Identifies cause + location
  • Documents condition
  • Sells repair work

Chemical drain cleaners:

  • Caustic (lye) OR acid
  • For grease + organic
  • Damages older pipes
  • Avoid in PVC long-term
  • Don't use in heavily blocked drain (sits + concentrates)

Wet/dry vacuum:

  • Suck out clog
  • Sometimes works for small drains
  • Useful for sediment / hair

Diagnostic approach

When customer reports clog:

  1. Where is it slow / blocked?

    • One fixture: localized
    • Multiple fixtures: shared drain OR vent issue
    • All drains: main line
  2. When did it start?

    • Sudden: object lodged
    • Gradual: buildup
    • Recurring: underlying issue (roots, slope)
  3. Customer's attempts?

    • Chemical drain cleaner used (be careful)
    • DIY plunging
    • Other tech's prior work
  4. Pipe material + age?

    • Old galvanized: corrosion + scale
    • Cast iron: roots, scale
    • PVC: usually clear
    • Old clay: collapse, roots

Clearing sequence

For typical residential clog:

  1. Plunge first (simple, cheap)
  2. Hand snake (if plunge fails)
  3. Power drum snake (heavier clog)
  4. Jetter (grease, scaling, main drain)
  5. Camera (to verify + diagnose root cause)
  6. Spot repair OR replacement (if pipe damaged)

Cheapest + simplest first; escalate as needed.

Toilet clogs

First: plunger (proper toilet plunger with flange)

If plunger fails:

  • Closet auger (toilet snake, 3-6 ft)
  • Snake through toilet trap
  • Carefully avoid scratching bowl
  • Sometimes object visible

Remove toilet (if necessary):

  • Major clog beyond toilet
  • Access main line from below
  • Cleanout sometimes needed

Sink + tub clogs

P-trap access:

  • Remove trap (with bucket below)
  • Clear directly
  • Often resolves immediate clog
  • Reinstall

Snake from above:

  • Through drain
  • Through clean-out
  • Beyond trap

Snake through cleanout:

  • Floor cleanout (sometimes)
  • Wall cleanout

Kitchen drain (with disposal)

Disposal-side approach:

  • Remove disposal? (sometimes)
  • Snake through dishwasher discharge port

Below sink:

  • P-trap clean
  • Continue with snake if needed

Grease:

  • Sometimes hot water + dish soap helps
  • More likely: jetter

Main drain clog

Multiple fixtures affected:

  • Main line clogged
  • Cleanout outside often used
  • Larger snake (drum machine)

Where to access:

  • Outdoor cleanout (between house + street)
  • Basement cleanout
  • Roof vent (last resort)
  • Toilet base (remove toilet)

Camera after clearing:

  • Verify clear
  • Identify root cause
  • Document condition

Roots in sewer line

Common cause of recurring main clogs:

  • Roots grow through joints
  • Need cutting
  • May need root treatment

Approach:

  • Cutting blade on drum machine
  • Cuts roots
  • Doesn't stop regrowth
  • Root foam (copper sulfate) periodically
  • Eventually pipe replacement needed

Hydro jetter

For:

  • Heavy grease
  • Recurring clogs
  • Restaurant-type drains
  • Scale-coated pipes

Process:

  • Nozzle propelled into drain by water pressure
  • Backward jets propel; forward jets clean
  • Cuts grease + scours
  • Variable pressure based on pipe

Cost:

  • More expensive equipment
  • More expensive service
  • Worth it for the right job

Camera inspection

When to use:

  • Recurring clogs
  • Unknown cause
  • Verifying repair
  • Pre-purchase inspection
  • Documentation for customer

Process:

  • Cable with camera head
  • Threaded through drain
  • Real-time video
  • Recording capability
  • Locator (find depth + location)

Findings:

  • Roots
  • Pipe damage (cracks, collapse)
  • Bellies (low spots holding water)
  • Offset joints
  • Foreign objects

Hydrojetting vs snaking

Snake:

  • Lower cost
  • Punches hole through clog
  • Pipe walls still coated
  • Clog returns sooner

Jetter:

  • Higher cost
  • Scours pipe walls clean
  • Clog returns later
  • Better for grease + scale

For one-time clear: snake. For ongoing prevention: jetter.

Chemical drain cleaners

Caustic (sodium hydroxide / lye):

  • Saponifies grease
  • Generates heat
  • Damages aluminum
  • Can damage old pipes

Acid (sulfuric):

  • Aggressive on organic
  • Generates extreme heat
  • Damages PVC + many pipes
  • Cause of pipe failures 6+ months later

Best avoided in service:

  • Damages pipes
  • Doesn't address root cause
  • Customer may already have used (caution)
  • Mechanical methods better

If customer used: flush thoroughly before snaking (chemical can splash).

Common drain mistakes

  • Chemical drain cleaner before snake
  • Snake too aggressive (damages pipe)
  • Plunging toilet with sink plunger (no flange)
  • Skipping cleanout access (forcing through fixture)
  • Not running water after clearing (verify flow)
  • Not addressing root cause
  • Snake from wrong direction
  • Damaging fixture finish (chrome scratch)

After clearing

Verify:

  • Full flow
  • No leaks at connections you disturbed
  • Drain runs continuously
  • Customer satisfied

Run water for several minutes; sometimes secondary clog moves down.

Cleanup

Drain cleaning = messy:

  • Tarps OR cardboard
  • Bucket under work area
  • Old towels
  • Hand cleaner (heavy)
  • Customer's plumbing area cleaned

Customer remembers cleanup.

Documentation

Drain work generates disputes more than most plumbing. The customer's version is "it clogged again after you were here." Your notes decide who is right.

Record before you start:

  • Which fixtures back up and which do not. That list is the map of where the blockage sits.
  • Whether the customer had used a chemical drain product, and which kind. If chemical is standing in the line, note it and note that you told them (it changes your PPE and it changes the risk).
  • Existing damage you did not cause: cracked escutcheon, scratched chrome, stained ceiling, wet cabinet base. Photograph it. This is the single highest-value habit in drain work.

Record the work:

  • Access point used (cleanout, roof vent, pulled fixture, removed trap) and why.
  • Cable or jetter size, head or nozzle type, and footage run. Footage tells the next tech where the trouble is.
  • What came back on the cable: hair and soap, grease, roots, wipes, scale, foreign object. Photograph it.
  • Whether flow was restored fully or partially, and the run time of the flow test.

Record the condition of the line:

  • If you camera'd it, save the recording and note the footage marks for any belly, break, offset joint, root intrusion, or scale. A verbal "your line is bad" sells nothing and defends nothing.
  • Pipe material and any age indicators (clay, cast iron, orangeburg) you observed.

Record what you recommended and what the customer declined. Root cause work (line repair, jetting after a snake, hydro flush of a grease line, removing an improper fitting) is routinely declined on price. Write the recommendation, write the decline, and get a signature if your shop uses one. That is the document that ends the callback argument.

Who reads it later: the next tech on the repeat call, your service manager pricing the recommended repair, and the customer's insurer or the municipality if a backup causes damage.
