Fireplace + Chimney Reference
Why this matters
Fireplaces + chimneys require annual service + cleaning to operate safely. Failed chimney = CO + fire risk. The chimney sweep + service tech who understands fireplace types + chimney systems delivers safe + efficient operation. This is the field card.
Fireplace types
Masonry (traditional wood-burning): brick + mortar; on-site built; firebox + smoke chamber + flue.
Prefab metal (zero-clearance): factory-built metal box; wood OR gas; common modern construction.
Wood-burning insert: cast iron OR steel insert into existing masonry fireplace.
Pellet stove: burns wood pellets; uses electric blower; small footprint.
Wood-burning stove (free-standing): cast iron / steel; chimney pipe to roof.
Gas log (vented): gas burners + ceramic logs in masonry OR prefab.
Gas fireplace (vented direct-vent): sealed combustion; no chimney; PVC OR concentric vent.
Gas fireplace (vent-free / ventless): no flue; CO + moisture into room. Restricted in some jurisdictions.
Outdoor fireplace + fire pit: masonry OR portable; gas OR wood.
Chimney types
Masonry chimney: brick + flue tile liner.
Class A chimney pipe: prefab; double OR triple-wall insulated; for wood-burning + zero-clearance.
Class B vent: gas appliance vent; not for solid fuel.
Class L vent: oil-burning appliance.
Type B vent: gas only; lower temperature.
Type BW vent: gas wall furnace.
Direct-vent: sealed; intake + exhaust separated; PVC OR concentric metal.
Chimney parts
Flue/lining (smooth interior; ceramic tile, stainless steel, OR cast-in-place); crown/cap at top sheds water; chimney cap/raincap (metal cover; rain + animal + ember protection); damper (at top of firebox; closes when not in use); smoke chamber (above firebox); hearth (floor of firebox; extends in front); firebox (combustion chamber); throat (opening between firebox + smoke chamber); lintel (header above firebox); spark arrestor screen prevents ember escape.
Cleaning + maintenance
Frequency:
- Heavy wood use: 2 - 3 times per year
- Moderate wood use: annual
- Gas log: annual inspection
- Wood-burning stove: per cord burned (varies)
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 211): annual chimney inspection.
Creosote: wood combustion deposit; flammable; main cause of chimney fires.
Stages:
- 1st: fluffy soot
- 2nd: tar-like brittle deposit
- 3rd: hard, glassy coating (hard to remove)
Removal: chimney brush (wire); rotary brush; chemical creosote modifier; in severe case, mechanical cleaning + flue replacement.
Chimney inspection levels (NFPA 211)
Level 1: visual inspection of readily-accessible parts (annual).
Level 2: more thorough; required after major event (chimney fire, weather damage, addition to fuel type) OR sale of home.
Level 3: most intensive; removal of components if needed; for major repair OR rebuilding.
Certified chimney sweep (CSIA): recommended for professional inspection.
Common fireplace + chimney issues
Smoke entering room (damper closed; cold air column in flue; chimney blocked; downdraft; insufficient combustion air). Backdraft (cold flue + warm house reverses draft; open window OR pre-heat flue). Creosote buildup (wet wood; smoldering fires; cold flue; no annual cleaning). Crown cracking (weather + age; repair with crown coating OR rebuild). Crown leak (damages firebox + masonry). Spalled brick (face flaking from freeze-thaw; repair OR rebuild). Cracked flue tile (chimney fire OR age; relining). Missing damper (heat loss + animals). Failed gas log assembly (gas valve, thermocouple, pilot, blower).
Chimney relining
Stainless steel rigid OR flexible liner: most modern.
Cast-in-place liner: poured ceramic; specialty.
Required when: cracked flue tile, gas appliance addition (different vent type), chimney fire damage.
Chimney cap install
Reasons to install: prevent water entry, animal access, ember escape.
Single-flue cap: standard.
Multi-flue cap: covers multiple flues.
Brand: ChimneyRX, HY-C, Lyemance.
Install: bolt OR cement OR sleeve; over crown.
Damper
Top-mount damper (Lyemance, Lock-Top): at top of chimney; better seal than throat damper.
Throat damper (traditional): at base of flue; common older masonry.
Replacement: when broken OR not sealing.
Gas log conversion
Vented gas log set: ceramic logs + gas burners; in masonry fireplace.
Damper modification: typically open partially during gas use (clamp OR fixed-open).
Gas line: 1/2" + valve at fireplace.
Vent-free gas log: no flue; CO + moisture concern; restricted some jurisdictions.
Wood-burning safety
EPA-certified stove (after 1988): cleaner-burning + more efficient.
Storage of firewood: outdoor + covered; seasoned 6 - 12 months minimum.
Clearances: per manufacturer; typical 36" from combustibles for wood stove.
Hearth dimensions: per code; extends in front of firebox.
CO detector: required in homes with combustion appliances.
Gas fireplace safety
Direct-vent: sealed combustion; safest.
B-vent (older): atmospheric; vulnerable to backdraft.
Vent-free: room ventilation important; CO + moisture concern; not allowed sleeping rooms.
Pilot light + thermocouple: standard ignition; replace if won't light.
Wall switch / remote: gas valve control.
Common service tasks
Annual cleaning: chimney sweep + inspection.
Damper repair / replace: throat OR top-mount.
Cap install / replace: water + animal prevention.
Crown repair: sealant OR rebuild.
Flue relining: stainless steel liner.
Gas log service: thermocouple, valve, pilot.
Gas conversion: wood-burning to gas; remove ash, install logs.
Wood stove install: zero-clearance; chimney pipe; hearth pad.
Code requirements
NFPA 211: chimneys, fireplaces + solid fuel-burning appliances.
IRC R1001: masonry fireplaces.
Hearth dimensions: per IRC (extends in front).
Smoke + CO detectors: required.
Permits: typically required new fireplace OR major modification.
Customer education
Annual maintenance: critical for safety.
Burn seasoned wood only (< 20% moisture content): less creosote.
Don't burn: garbage, treated wood, paint, plastic.
Build fires correctly: kindling + small split logs first; avoid smoldering.
Open damper FULLY before lighting: prevents smoke into room.
Glass doors closed during burn: heats more efficiently + safer.
CO detector + smoke detector: monthly test.
Truck stock (chimney sweep service)
Sweeping: wire and poly brush set sized to the common flue dimensions in your area (round and square), fiberglass push rods with spare couplers, rotary cleaning system with flexible drive and chain or poly heads for glazed deposit, and a rod guide for offsets.
Containment and cleanup: HEPA-rated ash vacuum (a shop vac without HEPA filtration blows fine soot through the house), drop cloths and a dedicated floor runner, fireplace cover or dust barrier with a work port, painter's tape, and a bucket with a lid for debris. Containment is what the customer judges you on, not the flue.
Inspection: chimney camera with a light and enough cable for a full-height flue, mirror on a telescoping handle, strong flashlight and headlamp, moisture meter for firewood, combustible gas detector and a personal CO monitor, tape measure and a smoke pencil or draft gauge.
Access and fall protection: extension ladder rated for the load with standoff, roof ladder or ridge hook, harness with rope grab and an anchor, and non-marking shoe covers for the interior.
PPE: respirator rated for particulate (soot is a known carcinogen risk, and creosote is a skin irritant), sealed eye protection, gloves, and coveralls you change out of before you get in the truck.
Common parts to carry: chimney caps in the sizes you see most, spark screen and mesh, top-sealing damper hardware, throat damper handles and plates, gas log pilot assembly parts (thermocouple, thermopile, igniter), high-temperature silicone and refractory mortar, crown sealant, flashing sealant, and stainless liner clamps and a short section of flexible liner for repairs.
Paperwork: inspection report forms with the NFPA level checked, a camera for before and after photos, and CO alarm literature to leave with the customer.
