Common Gauges + Meters Reference

Why this matters

Field diagnostics depend on accurate readings. The technician without the right gauge OR meter guesses; the one with proper instruments knows. Multimeter on a no-cool A/C, manifold on a low-charge system, manometer on a draft problem - the gauge IS the diagnosis. This is the field card every service tech keeps mental hold of.

Multimeter (electrical fundamentals)

Functions:

  • Voltage AC: line voltage measurement (115V, 230V, 460V)
  • Voltage DC: battery, control circuit (24V, 12V, 9V)
  • Current AC (with clamp): motor draw, circuit load
  • Current DC: control loop, sensor current
  • Resistance (ohms): continuity, motor windings, heater elements
  • Continuity beep: quick check (wires, switches)
  • Capacitance (μF): run/start capacitors
  • Frequency (Hz): 60 Hz line; VFD output
  • Temperature (with TC probe): air, surface, refrigerant lines

Categories (CAT rating):

  • CAT II: outlet circuits, small appliance
  • CAT III: distribution panels, motors, breakers
  • CAT IV: utility connections, service entrance

Match the CAT rating to where you are standing. Branch circuits and receptacles are CAT II to CAT III. Panels, feeders, and motor circuits are CAT III. The service entrance and anything upstream of the main is CAT IV, not CAT III, whatever the voltage number says. Good meters carry two ratings at once, for example CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V, and BOTH have to cover the point you are probing. A high voltage number does not buy you a higher category.

Clamp meter

Measures AC (some DC) current without breaking circuit. Slips around single conductor; reads magnetic field.

Use cases: motor amp draw (compare to nameplate), circuit load on breaker, finding ground-fault sources, balancing 3-phase loads.

Don't clamp around insulated cable jacket (multiple conductors cancel). Clamp single wire only.

Manifold gauge set (HVAC)

Two gauges: low side (compound, blue, vacuum to 350 PSI) + high side (red, 0 - 500+ PSI).

Modern digital manifolds: also show pressure, target superheat/subcool, temperature, P/T conversion. Yellow Jacket Mantooth, Fieldpiece SMAN.

Hoses: red high-side, blue low-side, yellow center (refrigerant tank OR vacuum pump). All same fitting (1/4" SAE flare).

Connection: schrader valve cores on AC system; cores OPEN when manifold engaged.

Use: refrigerant charging, diagnosing high/low pressure, vacuum pull, recovery.

Vacuum gauge (micron gauge)

Measures deep vacuum during refrigerant system evacuation. Reads in microns (1/1000 mmHg).

Target: 500 microns OR lower before charging. 1000+ microns = moisture OR leak OR insufficient pump.

Common models: Yellow Jacket BluVac, Fieldpiece SVG3, JB Industries Vidi.

Manometer (gas + air pressure)

Measures gas pressure in inches of water column (" WC).

Types:

  • U-tube manometer: traditional, fluid-filled. Reads to 0.1" WC.
  • Magnehelic (Dwyer): mechanical analog dial. Static + differential pressure.
  • Digital manometer (Testo, Fieldpiece): convenient, accurate.

Use:

  • Natural gas pressure (target 7" WC line; 3.5" WC manifold)
  • Propane pressure (target 11" WC line; 10" WC manifold)
  • HVAC duct static pressure (target 0.5" WC TESP)
  • Combustion chamber draft (target -0.02" WC for atmospheric)

Refrigerant scale (recovery + charge)

Reads weight of refrigerant. Required for refrigerant work.

Use: weigh refrigerant in/out for accurate charge; recovery into tank; nameplate weight comparison.

Common models: Robinair, Mastercool, Yellow Jacket.

Tachometer / speed measurement

Optical tach: non-contact; reflects laser off rotating part with reflective tape. Measure motor RPM, fan RPM, drive shaft.

Contact tach: spring-loaded tip touches shaft end.

Use: blower motor speed verification, equipment RPM check, indirect torque calculation.

Anemometer (airflow)

Hot-wire anemometer: measures air velocity (FPM); calculates CFM with duct area.

Vane anemometer: rotating vane in airflow; rugged + lower-cost.

Use: register CFM measurement, duct balancing, exhaust verification, ventilation troubleshooting.

Combustion analyzer

Measures combustion byproducts: CO, CO2, O2, stack temp, draft.

Use: gas furnace tune-up + commissioning, CO troubleshooting, efficiency reading.

Common models: Bacharach Insight Plus, Testo 320/330, Wohler A 550.

Carbon monoxide detector

Personal handheld OR ambient room reader.

Action levels:

Ascending, so the ladder reads correctly:

  • 0 ppm: normal
  • 9 ppm: EPA ambient-air 8-hr standard, referenced by ASHRAE 62 as an indoor target
  • 35 ppm: NIOSH recommended exposure limit, 8-hr TWA; also the EPA 1-hr ambient standard
  • 50 ppm: OSHA permissible exposure limit, 8-hr TWA (29 CFR 1910.1000 Table Z-1)
  • 70 ppm and up: residential CO alarms sound. Treat it as evacuate and ventilate, not as a number to work through
  • 200 ppm: NIOSH ceiling, never to be exceeded at any moment

Refrigerant leak detector

Electronic detector: handheld sniffer; detects most refrigerants.

Bubble solution: poured over fitting; bubbles indicate leak. Cheap, slow.

UV dye + UV light: dye added to system; UV light reveals leak. Permanent system-side method.

Common models: Fieldpiece SRL2, Inficon TEK-Mate.

Voltage detector (non-contact)

Pen-style; lights up near energized conductor. CAUTION: senses voltage even on neutral OR ground-referenced. Always verify with multimeter before assuming dead.

Hygrometer

Measures relative humidity + temperature. Used for indoor air quality, mold investigation, dehumidifier sizing.

pH meter (Pool / WaterTreatment)

Liquid drops + color comparison OR digital electrode. pH 7.2 - 7.8 ideal pool; EPA's secondary drinking water standard is a range of 6.5 to 8.5.

Insulation resistance meter (megohmmeter)

Tests insulation integrity at high voltage (250V, 500V, 1000V). Reads megohms. Motor + cable + transformer winding test. Reading below 1 MΩ = failed insulation.

Borescope / inspection camera

Flexible camera for sewer lines, ductwork, behind walls, equipment interior. Required for sewer scope service.

Common gauge mistakes

Wrong CAT rating for measurement = damaged meter + tech injury. Skipping ZERO before reading (analog gauges drift). Calibration overdue (manufacturers recommend annual). Test leads loose / damaged = false reading. Hose leaks in manifold (false pressure). Schrader cores stuck = phantom readings. Forgetting humidity / altitude correction.

Calibration + replacement

Annual calibration recommended (combustion analyzer, manifold). Drop tested if dropped > 3 ft. Replace meters with cracked case OR melted lead. Cheap meters fail; quality meters last decades.

The single most-impactful diagnostic habit is the VERIFY-THE-DEAD-WIRE step before touching it. Even when the breaker is OFF + the voltage pen reads clear, ALWAYS confirm with a quality multimeter set to AC voltage. Voltage pens have detected wires + thrown false negatives + injured techs who trusted them. The multimeter on a known-live circuit first (proves meter works) → on the target wire (must read 0V) → on known-live again (proves meter still works). This is the LOTO test-before-touch principle. The 10 seconds saved by skipping = the lifetime spent recovering from arc-flash injury.
