Concrete Mix + Cure Time Reference
Why this matters
Service trades occasionally pour concrete - setting fence posts, patching slab, mounting equipment pads (HVAC condenser, generator), anchoring poles. Wrong mix OR wrong cure = post pulls out next year, slab cracks, equipment shifts. Knowing the basics keeps small concrete jobs from becoming expensive callbacks. This is the field card.
Concrete vs cement vs mortar
Cement: powder (Portland cement) - binds the mix.
Concrete: cement + sand + gravel (coarse aggregate) + water. Bulk construction.
Mortar: cement + sand + water (no gravel) + lime. Brick + block laying.
Grout: cement + fine aggregate + water + sometimes admixtures. Filling joints, cores.
Stucco: cement + sand + lime + water. Exterior finish.
Concrete strength
Standard mixes by PSI: 1500 PSI light non-load (sidewalks); 2500 PSI residential standard (sidewalks/paths/footings); 3000 PSI general (slabs/footings/driveways); 3500 PSI standard driveway (garage floors); 4000 PSI higher load (heavy driveways/structural); 5000+ PSI industrial. Higher PSI = stronger but more expensive + harder to work.
Mix proportions
1:2:3 ratio (cement:sand:gravel) yields ~3000 PSI. 1:2:4 weaker (~2500 PSI, more gravel, cheaper). 1:1:2 stronger (4000+ PSI, less gravel, more cement). Water-to-cement ratio: lower W/C = stronger; typically 0.45 - 0.55; too much water = weak concrete.
Bag mixes
80-lb bag (most common Sakrete, Quikrete): 0.6 cu ft per bag, ~45 bags per cubic yard. 60-lb bag: 0.45 cu ft. Quick-set/fast-set bags: set 20 - 40 min, dump dry then add water, 24-hour cure. Fence post hole: 1 - 2 bags typical.
Mixing methods
By hand (small jobs):

- Mix dry first, then add water gradually
- Mix until uniform color + workability
Drum mixer (medium jobs):
- 1 - 9 cubic feet capacity

Pour temperature requirements
Ambient temperature:
- 50°F - 90°F ideal
- < 40°F: cold weather curing required (covers, accelerators, heaters)

90°F: hot weather requires retarders, sun shading, fast finish
Wet concrete should not freeze:
- Cover with blankets / hay if cold
- Set time 50 - 200% longer in cold
- Accelerator means calcium chloride, not fly ash. Fly ash is a supplementary cementitious material and it goes the other direction: it slows early strength gain, which is exactly the wrong behavior in cold weather. Reduce or drop fly ash for a cold pour, do not add it
- Calcium chloride carries its own limit. Chlorides drive corrosion of embedded steel, so codes cap chloride content in reinforced and prestressed concrete. On any pour with rebar, mesh, or embedded anchors, use a non-chloride accelerator instead, or bring the heat to the mix with warmed water and aggregate
Cure times

Don't load fully until 7 days minimum for residential applications.
Vehicle traffic on driveway: 7+ days for light, 28 days for heavy.
Cure care
Why care matters: water in concrete continues hydration reaction for 28 days. Premature drying weakens concrete.
Methods:
- Water curing: spray daily for 7 days (best)
- Plastic sheeting: cover; retains moisture
- Curing compound: applied liquid forms protective film
- Curing blankets: insulation in cold weather
Don't:
- Power-wash newly poured concrete
- Apply finishes / coatings for 28 days
- Allow rain on still-fresh surface (washes cement)
Common concrete applications
Fence/mailbox post: 6 ft pole + 2 ft in concrete, hole 2 - 3x post diameter, 1 - 2 bags 80-lb, set 20 min fast-set/4 hr standard, no fence rails for 24 hrs.
HVAC condenser pad: pour 24" × 36" × 4", 3000 PSI mix. Forms can come off and you can walk it at 24 to 48 hours, but hold the equipment until 7 days per the loading rule above. A condenser set on a green pad indents it and starts a crack, and the refrigerant lines then hold the unit out of level when the pad moves.
Generator pad: 36" × 48" × 4 - 6", 4000 PSI mix (heavier load + vibration), anchor bolts pre-set, cure 7 days.
Garage door track anchor: 6" × 6" × 8" block, 1/2" anchor bolt embedded, cure 7 days.
Sidewalk patch: clean cracks + prime; bag mixes work; match existing texture.
Mailbox foundation: 6" post + sleeve, 12" diameter hole, 1 - 2 bags 80-lb.
Avoiding cracks + reinforcement
Concrete cracks from drying too fast, freezing during cure, heavy load too early, no control joints. Control joints: saw-cut or tooled to 1/4 of the slab thickness, so 1 in on a 4 in slab, every 8 - 12 ft on slabs and driveways, every 5 - 6 ft on sidewalks. Reinforcement: rebar #4 (1/2") at 16" o.c. for slabs; fiber mesh in mix alternative; wire mesh for sidewalks/light slabs.
Weather + aggregates + rebar
Hot weather (> 90°F): pour early morning or evening, spray subgrade, retarders, plastic sheeting/wet burlap after pour. Cold weather (below 40°F, which is the threshold cold-weather concreting practice uses): heated water and aggregates, a non-chloride accelerator on anything with steel in it, insulating blankets, and never pour on frozen ground. Cut fly ash back rather than adding it.
Aggregates: river or manufactured sand; 1/2" - 1" gravel; pea gravel (1/4 - 3/8") for pump-able + smooth surface; crushed stone angular. Smaller aggregate = smoother finish; larger = stronger structural.
Rebar: Grade 40 lower strength, Grade 60 standard, Grade 75 heavy commercial. Sizes: #3 = 3/8", #4 = 1/2", #5 = 5/8", #6 = 3/4". Most residential #4 or #5. Spacing 16 - 24" o.c. typical slab.
Common concrete mistakes
Too much water: weak concrete; cracks.
Too little water: doesn't bond + workability suffers.
Pouring in rain: water dilutes surface; weakens.
Pouring on frozen ground: subgrade movement = cracks.
No control joints: random cracking.
Setting fence post in dirt without concrete: pulls out.
Wrong mix for application: 2500 PSI for driveway = cracks.
Skipping cure: concrete dries too fast; weak + cracks.
Heavy load too early: deflects + cracks.
No reinforcement on larger slabs: cracks.
Yardage calculations
Cubic yards needed:
- Cubic yard = 27 cubic feet
- Slab: length (ft) × width (ft) × thickness (ft) / 27 = CY
- Example: 10 × 10 × 0.33 = 33 cu ft / 27 = 1.22 CY
Always order 10% extra to account for over-excavation, waste.
