Why this matters

Customers often misuse thermostats - wrong settings, constant adjustments, misunderstanding modes. The tech who educates customers improves their comfort, lowers their bills, + reduces unnecessary service calls. This is the field card.

Common thermostat types

Manual / non-programmable:

Programmable scheduling tips

Program the recovery, not the arrival. The house takes time to come back from setback. Set the comfort period to start ahead of when the customer actually wants the temperature, typically 30 to 60 minutes depending on the house and the setback depth. Thermostats with adaptive or smart recovery do this math themselves; older ones do not, and the customer blames the equipment for being slow.

Heat pumps are the exception to deep setback. A large setback on a heat pump brings on auxiliary electric heat during recovery, which costs far more per unit of heat than the compressor. Keep heat-pump setbacks shallow (a few degrees) or let the thermostat's heat-pump recovery logic handle it.

Four periods is usually plenty. Wake, day, evening, sleep. A customer given eight periods will not maintain them.

Match the schedule to the real week. A 5+2 thermostat handles a standard work week. Shift work, a spouse home two days, or a retired household needs 7-day programming or no programming at all.

Show the difference between hold and permanent hold. Temporary hold releases at the next scheduled period. Permanent hold kills the schedule until someone cancels it, and that is the number one reason a "programmed" thermostat never runs its program. Show the customer both buttons and what the display looks like in each state.

Vacation or away setting is better than turning the system off. Keep enough heat to protect pipes in winter and enough cooling to keep humidity down in summer.

Reprogram at the season change. The cooling schedule and the heating schedule are not the same, and the auto-changeover deadband needs a look too.

Check the clock. After a power outage or a dead battery, many older programmables reset the time and quietly run the whole schedule offset. If a customer says the house is warm at the wrong hours, check the day and time before anything else.

Write the schedule down and leave it with the customer, or photograph the programmed screens for the job record. When they call in six months asking what you set, you will have it.
