Dishwasher Diagnosis Reference

Why this matters

A dishwasher service call comes from one of four directions: won't fill, won't drain, doesn't clean, or leaks. The diagnosis path differs sharply for each, and the cost of being wrong is high - a relatively inexpensive pump diagnosed as a much pricier control board is the most common bench mistake. Knowing the cycle phases and what each phase needs to succeed is the diagnostic key.

Cycle phases (typical residential dishwasher)

  1. Initial fill: water supply valve opens; tub fills to a float-set level (usually 1-2 quarts). Float rises to limit further fill.
  2. Main wash: circulation pump pushes water through spray arms; heater raises water temp to 130-160 °F; detergent dispenser opens.
  3. Drain: drain pump runs; check valve at the drain line keeps sewer water out.
  4. Rinse fill / rinse / drain: typically two rinse cycles, with rinse aid dispensed before final rinse.
  5. Heated dry (optional): heating element + fan or vent flapper.

If any phase fails, the cycle locks up or completes badly.

Won't fill / fills too slowly

Diagnose: check water supply valve at the dishwasher's inlet hose. Open the valve briefly with the dishwasher off - should flow strong.

  • Closed angle stop: customer or previous tech may have closed it. Confirm open.
  • Clogged inlet valve screen: small mesh filter at the inlet - sediment buildup over time. Remove, rinse, reinstall.
  • Failed inlet valve solenoid: 120 V applied during fill but no water flow. Test continuity of the solenoid (typical 500-2000 Ω); replace if open.
  • Failed float switch: the float in the tub bottom is stuck (debris under it) or the switch failed. Lift float manually; if dishwasher fills, float is stuck.
  • Low household water pressure: less than 20 psi; fill is slow.
  • Cold-only supply with no heater: the heater can't bring tap water to 130-160 °F fast enough; cycle times stretch. Most modern dishwashers prefer hot water supply.

Won't drain / water sits in bottom

Diagnose: open the dishwasher mid-cycle (cancel/drain button or just kill power and look in). Water in the bottom?

  • Clogged drain pump impeller: food debris, broken glass, label fragments. Remove the bottom cover, inspect the drain pump impeller - spin manually, check for jams.
  • Air gap / high loop clogged: the air gap (small chrome cap on the countertop) prevents sewer backflow. Pull the cap, clear food debris from the inlet.
  • Drain hose clogged: kinked behind dishwasher, food debris in the line, or junction at disposal blocked. Sometimes the disposal's knockout plug was never punched (see Garbage Disposal Replacement Reference).
  • Failed drain pump motor: runs continuously (or doesn't run at all). Test the motor with 120 V; replace if dead.
  • Check valve stuck open: lets water flow back from drain into tub.
  • Tub drain filter clogged: older units have a flat mesh screen at the tub bottom; remove and clean.

Doesn't clean / dishes still dirty

Diagnose: run a cycle empty, watch the spray arms rotate. Open mid-cycle.

  • Spray arms blocked: food debris in the arm jets. Remove the arms, rinse, look for hidden plug.
  • Low water temperature: household hot water at the tap should read 120 °F minimum. If less, the dishwasher's heater compensates but takes longer. Check the water heater setting (130-140 °F at the source is typical for dishwasher service).
  • Failed heating element: test continuity of the element (typically 15-30 Ω). Open = bad. Element is at the bottom of the tub, hidden by the lower spray arm.
  • Failed detergent dispenser: dispenser door doesn't open. Cycle ends with detergent still in the cup.
  • Hard water buildup: mineral scale on spray arms, in piping. Run a Lemi-Shine or citric-acid cleaning cycle.
  • Excessive loading: customer overstuffs the racks; jets can't reach all dishes. Educate.

Leaks

Diagnose: where does the water appear? Front of unit, side of unit, underneath?

  • Door gasket worn: seal around the door perimeter. Replace (inexpensive part).
  • Door not aligned: door hinges or alignment mechanism worn; door doesn't seal tight. Adjust the door alignment screws on the door hinges; or replace the door alignment kit.
  • Tub gasket / spray arm gasket: internal leaks; visible water under the dishwasher. Pull the unit forward; inspect under the tub.
  • Pump seal: circulation pump has a shaft seal that fails over time. Replace pump.
  • Inlet valve weeping: fill valve drips at the connection; replace.
  • Drain hose loose: hose clamp loose at disposal connection. Tighten or replace clamp.

Error codes

Modern dishwashers (Bosch, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, GE, Samsung, LG) display error codes on the display or via blinking LEDs. Code interpretation is brand-specific:

  • Bosch: E15 (water leak detected), E22 (heating), E24 (drain)
  • Whirlpool / KitchenAid: F1 (control board), F2 (door switch), F8 (water inlet)
  • GE: PF (power failure), C1 (drain), C2 (overflow)
  • Samsung: LE (leak detected), 4E (water supply), OE (drain), HE (heater)
  • LG: LE (leak), IE (water inlet), OE (drain), HE (heater)

Always look up the brand-specific code; some codes mean different things across brands.

Diagnostic procedure

  1. Power on, start a cycle, observe. Most failures show up in the first 3-5 minutes (fill or initial wash).
  2. Listen for the inlet valve solenoid click. Confirms power is reaching the valve.
  3. Look at water entering the tub. Strong fill = inlet OK; trickle = inlet restricted or low supply pressure.
  4. Check pump operation. Open the door 2 minutes into wash; water should be moving through spray arms.
  5. Watch drain. Cancel/drain mid-cycle; pump should run, tub should empty in 60-90 seconds.
  6. Check temperature. Use a thermometer in the tub mid-wash; should hit 130-150 °F.
  7. Inspect filters. Pull the bottom spray arm; clean any debris in the filter / mesh.

Common gotchas

  • Customer thinks the dishwasher is "broken" but it's actually a clogged garbage disposal drain. Run disposal, see if the dishwasher drains.
  • Dishwasher drain hose missing the "high loop" or air gap. Without one, sewer water can back-siphon into the dishwasher tub during a sink drain event. IPC 802.1.7 / UPC requires this.
  • Forgot to remove a label from a new dish or container - labels detach in the wash, clog drain or pump.
  • Salt in the rinse aid dispenser (European dishwashers have a salt port for water softening; American customers fill it with rinse aid by mistake).
  • Detergent type - automatic dishwasher detergent only; never regular dish soap (massive foam, leaks everywhere).

When to recommend replacement vs repair

The honest math on a dishwasher is harsher than on most appliances, because entry-level and mid-grade units are cheap relative to a couple of hours of skilled labor plus a part.

Repair is easy to justify when:

  • The unit is under roughly 7 years old
  • The failure is a bolt-on part: inlet valve, drain pump, float switch, door gasket, heating element, hinge or spring kit, spray arm
  • The repair including labor lands under about a third of a comparable new unit installed
  • It is a premium unit (stainless tub, high-end wash system) where the replacement cost is a multiple of an entry-level machine
  • It is a built-in in custom cabinetry where a swap means cabinet or countertop work

Lean replacement when:

  • The unit is past about 10 years, which is around the middle of typical service life
  • The control board has failed, especially on a mid-grade unit; a board plus labor often approaches half the cost of new
  • The circulation pump or motor assembly failed, which is the priciest common part
  • The tub itself is cracked, delaminating, or rusted through at the seams (plastic tubs go brittle, coated steel tubs rust from the bottom)
  • Two or more significant components have failed inside a year
  • Parts are on backorder or discontinued, and the customer is without a machine for weeks

The two things that change the answer:

  1. A leak that has already damaged the floor or cabinets. Once water has been under the unit, the conversation is not just about the dishwasher. Pull it, dry and assess the subfloor, and price the whole picture.
  2. Water heater setting. A machine that "never got the dishes clean" may be fine hardware fed by tap water that is too cool. Verify before selling a replacement, or the customer gets a new machine with the same complaint.

How to present it: give the repair number, the expected remaining life if repaired, and the fact that a new unit carries a fresh warranty and better cycle efficiency. Then let the customer choose. Do not repair a machine that will fail again in a season without telling them that is the likely outcome.
