Faucet Cartridge Repair Reference
Why this matters
A dripping faucet is the single most common residential plumbing complaint, and 90% of the fix is an inexpensive cartridge or seat-and-spring kit. Knowing which brand uses which cartridge style, how to identify the right replacement part from the existing fixture, and the brand-specific removal trick (snap ring vs retaining nut vs threaded sleeve) turns a typical service call into 20 minutes of work with high customer satisfaction.
The four main faucet valve types
Ceramic disc (modern standard):
- Two ceramic discs with precise polished surfaces; aligning ports allows flow, misaligning blocks
- 25+ year service life when not contaminated
- Found in: most modern Moen, Kohler, Pfister, Delta MultiChoice (newer)
- Fails from: debris (sediment, mineral scale) scratching the disc surface, then the ceramic chips
- Symptom: drips constantly, sometimes hot/cold mix issues
Cartridge (Moen, Price Pfister, American Standard):
- Plastic-bodied cylindrical cartridge with O-ring seals; rotates to control flow and temp
- Found in: most older Moen single-handle, some Pfister, some American Standard
- Fails from: O-ring degradation, internal seal wear
- Symptom: drip, hard-to-turn handle, leak around base of handle
Ball valve (Delta, Peerless):
- Stainless ball with two ports; rotates inside a body sealed by springs and rubber seats
- Found in: classic Delta single-handle (the iconic round-knob look)
- Fails from: worn seats and springs (the two rubber seats with springs underneath)
- Symptom: drip, can be repaired with inexpensive seat-and-spring kit
Compression / stem (traditional two-handle):
- Threaded stem with a rubber washer at the bottom; turns the stem to compress washer against seat
- Found in: older two-handle faucets (typically pre-1990s); still used in laundry / utility / hose bibs
- Fails from: rubber washer wear, brass seat erosion
- Symptom: drip, can be repaired with new washer + sometimes new seat

If you can't identify by sight, look for:
- A stamped or printed number on the cartridge itself (visible when removed)
- The faucet's model number (under the spout, behind the handle, or on the manufacturer's website)
- Stock at the local supply house - they usually know "this brand uses this part"
Diagnosis
Drip from the spout (continuous, valve closed):
- Cartridge or ball / seats worn
- Replace cartridge OR seat-and-spring kit (Delta)
Drip from base of handle (water around the handle):
- O-ring at the cartridge stem worn
- Some cartridges replaceable with just the O-ring; some need full cartridge swap
Hard to turn or stiff:
- Mineral scale on the cartridge stem
- Worn cartridge (internal seal degradation creating friction)
- Replace cartridge
Hot/cold mixing not consistent:
- Cartridge with broken thermostatic / pressure-balance feature (Moen Posi-Temp, Delta MultiChoice)
- Replace the cartridge
Sputtering / inconsistent flow:
- Aerator clogged (not a cartridge issue) - unscrew, clean
- Cartridge ports partially blocked - replace
Strong reduction in flow:
- Aerator clogged first (check this)
- Supply restriction (angle stop debris)
- Cartridge debris-blocked - replace
Replacement procedure (single-handle Moen 1255)
Time: 20-30 minutes.
Tools:
- 5/32" hex key (handle set screw)
- Phillips screwdriver
- Channel-lock pliers
- New cartridge (Moen 1255 or specific OEM)
- Plumber's grease (silicone-based, food-grade for potable water - Oatey, Permatex)
- Towel for sink protection
Steps:
Shut off hot and cold angle stops under the sink. Open the faucet to release pressure and confirm shutoff.
Plug the drain with a rag - small parts that drop become permanent residents of the trap.
Remove the handle. Single-handle Moen: small hex set screw on the side or back of the handle (under a decorative cap on some models - pry the cap with a small flat blade). Loosen the set screw 2-3 turns, lift the handle straight up.
Remove the handle cover / collar if present. Most are pull-up or threaded.
Remove the retaining clip / pin / nut. Moen 1255 has a small horseshoe-shaped clip that retains the cartridge - pull it straight up with needle-nose pliers.
Remove the cartridge. It should pull straight up. If it's stuck (mineral scale, corrosion), use the Moen cartridge puller tool (inexpensive specialty tool) - slips over the cartridge stem and slide-hammers it free. Do not pry against the faucet body - you'll damage the body.
Inspect the body for mineral scale or debris. Wipe out with a rag.
Lubricate the new cartridge with plumber's silicone grease on all O-rings.
Install the new cartridge. Orient correctly per the marks (most cartridges have an "HOT" indicator that must align with the hot inlet).
Install the retaining clip / nut. Snap or thread into place.
Reinstall the handle. Set screw snug.
Restore water at the angle stops, slowly. Watch for leaks at the cartridge / body junction.
Test the faucet through full range - hot, cold, mix, on, off. Look for drips after closing.
Delta ball-valve seat-and-spring kit (RP4993)
Time: 15-25 minutes.
The Delta ball faucet is the iconic single-handle with the small ball under the handle cap. Seats and springs are just a few cents' worth of rubber and steel; replace them and the faucet is good for years.
- Shut off angle stops.
- Loosen the handle setscrew, remove the handle.
- Remove the cap (decorative dome). Threaded; turn counterclockwise.
- Remove the cam, cam washer, and ball. Lift out.
- Reach into the body with needle-nose pliers and remove the two springs and seats (under each - the seat sits on top of the spring).
- Inspect the ball. Smooth, no pitting? Reuse. Visible wear or pitting? Replace ball (sometimes included in higher-end kits).
- Install new seats and springs. Spring goes in first; seat on top. The rubber side of the seat faces up toward the ball.
- Reassemble in reverse order. Tighten cam ring to manufacturer spec (typically hand-tight plus 1/4 turn).
- Test and adjust.
Two-handle compression stem repair
Time: 20-40 minutes for both sides, longer if a seat is seized.
The old workhorse. A rubber washer squeezed against a brass seat. The washer wears, the seat erodes, and the faucet drips. Both parts are pennies. Fix the seat too or you will be back.
Shut off the angle stops for both hot and cold. Open the faucet to relieve pressure and confirm the shutoff holds. Put a rag in the drain so nothing small disappears.
Pop the handle index cap (the H / C button). Thin blade or a pick under the edge. Remove the handle screw underneath and pull the handle. Corroded handles come off with a handle puller, not a screwdriver used as a pry bar; you will crack the escutcheon.
Remove the bonnet or packing nut, then back the stem out. Some stems thread out with a deep socket on the flats; some need a faucet stem wrench. Turn counterclockwise. Note which side you pulled; hot and cold stems are often threaded opposite and are not interchangeable.
Replace the seat washer. Remove the brass screw at the bottom of the stem, take off the old washer, seat the new one flat, and reinstall the screw. Replace the brass screw too if the head is chewed. Match the washer by size and by shape (flat versus beveled); a bevel-cone washer in a flat seat will drip.
Inspect the seat in the faucet body. Reach in with a flashlight. Run a fingertip around it. A smooth seat can be reused. Pitted, grooved, or rough and it will cut the new washer within weeks.
- Replaceable seat: it has a square or hex socket. Back it out with a seat wrench, take it to the truck, match it exactly, thread the new one in with pipe dope on the threads.
- Non-replaceable seat (machined into the body): dress it with a seat reamer. Light pressure, a few turns, just enough to clean the face flat. Overdoing it removes too much brass and the stem will bottom out before it seals.
Replace the stem packing while you have it apart. Either the O-ring on the stem body or graphite packing string under the packing nut, depending on vintage. This is the leak that shows up at the handle when the faucet is running.
Grease the stem threads and the O-ring with silicone faucet grease. Never petroleum grease; it swells the rubber.
Thread the stem back in. Hand-tight plus snug with the wrench. Do not gorilla it; you are compressing a washer against a seat, not setting a bolt.
Reinstall the bonnet, handle, screw, and index cap. Confirm hot is on the correct side before you press the cap in.
Restore water slowly at the stops. Run both sides wide open for a minute to flush debris, then close. Watch the spout for 30 seconds. No drip, no weep at the handle, no seep at the bonnet.
If it still drips after all that: the seat is out of flat, the washer is the wrong profile, or debris got under the washer during reassembly. Pull it back apart rather than tightening the handle harder. Overtightening is what destroyed the original washer.
When to stop repairing: badly eroded non-replaceable seats, a cracked body, or a faucet where the stems are no longer available. At that point the labor to chase it exceeds a new faucet, and the customer is better served by a replacement.
