Furnace Pressure Switch Diagnosis Reference
Why this matters
The pressure switch is the gas furnace's draft-proving safety. It confirms the inducer is actually pulling combustion air and venting products before the board allows the gas valve to open. A stuck-closed switch lets the burner light without draft (CO into the house). A stuck-open or false-tripping switch refuses to fire and the customer has no heat. Both failure modes are common; the diagnostic procedure is fast if you carry a manometer.
How the switch works
The inducer motor pulls a slight negative pressure on the heat exchanger and venting. A small hose teed off the heat exchanger collector box (or off a venturi/orifice on condensing units) communicates that negative pressure to the diaphragm side of the pressure switch. When the negative pressure reaches the switch's setpoint, the diaphragm pulls the normally-open contacts closed, completing the safety circuit to the board.
Typical setpoints (always confirm against the rating plate or install manual):
- 80% AFUE single-stage furnace: -0.40 to -0.80 in. w.c. (single switch)
- 80% AFUE two-stage furnace: two switches, low-fire and high-fire setpoints (e.g., -0.30 and -0.60 in. w.c.)
- 90%+ condensing furnace: -1.0 to -1.7 in. w.c. typical; often a second switch on the secondary heat exchanger and sometimes a blocked-drain pressure switch as well
The switch is rated and stamped - don't substitute by setpoint guess. Match the part number; OEM or verified cross-reference only.
What trips a healthy pressure switch (real faults)
These are the conditions the switch is designed to catch. When you diagnose a "no-fire pressure-switch-open" call, work down this list before condemning the switch.
Vent blockage:
- Bird nest, rodent nest, or leaves in the termination
- Snow or ice over a sidewall PVC termination (90+ furnaces)
- Sagged horizontal PVC pulling a water trap that won't clear
- Wasps in the intake (condensing units, very common at summer-startup)
Condensate-related (condensing furnaces):
- Plugged condensate drain → water backs into the heat exchanger or secondary collector → pressure tubing fills with water → switch sees the water column, not the inducer draft
- Frozen condensate drain (basement install at exterior wall, unconditioned crawlspace)
- Clogged inline neutralizer or condensate pump
Inducer issues:
- Inducer motor bearings dry, wheel slowed → not pulling rated draft
- Inducer wheel cracked or with melted blade tips (a sign of past flame rollback)
- Loose inducer mounting allowing air bypass past the collector
Heat exchanger:
- Cracked primary heat exchanger pulling supply-air positive pressure into the combustion chamber, fighting the inducer draft
- Often shows as: switch makes on cold start, opens after a few minutes when the blower kicks on
Pressure tubing:
- Cracked, kinked, or disconnected silicone tubing
- Tubing routed with a low spot trapping water
- Wrong-diameter or wrong-length replacement tubing (length matters more than people think on condensing units)
What trips a pressure switch falsely (switch itself failed)
- Diaphragm leaked → switch never makes even with full vacuum applied
- Contacts welded closed → switch reads "closed" with no draft. Dangerous - manifests as immediate burner ignition with no inducer running. Modern boards usually catch this with a prove-open requirement at the start of the call.
- Pressure-port fitting cracked
- Switch mounted in wrong orientation (some models are orientation-sensitive)
Diagnostic procedure
Tools: Digital manometer (Dwyer 475 or Fieldpiece SDMN5/SDMN6), assorted hose adapters, multimeter, schematic, manufacturer install manual for the specific furnace.
Read the rating plate. Setpoint and switch part number live there or in the install manual. Without these you're guessing.
Disconnect the hose at the switch. Connect the manometer to the hose. Power furnace, initiate heat call. Watch the reading.
- Reads zero or near-zero: Inducer not running, vent blocked, or tubing plugged. Go to step 3.
- Reads weaker than setpoint (e.g., -0.20 in. w.c. when switch needs -0.40): Inducer weak, vent partially restricted, or heat exchanger leak. Go to step 4.
- Reads at or beyond setpoint: Draft is fine, the switch itself is the problem. Go to step 6.
Verify the inducer is running and check the vent. Listen, look. If the inducer is silent, troubleshoot the inducer (board sending 120 V? Cap good if PSC inducer? Bearings free?). If the inducer is running, pull and inspect the vent termination, run a vac or inspection mirror up the flue, check for obstruction at every elbow.
Inspect for condensate backup (90+ only). Pull the drain hose from the collector box, dump it. If water gushes, the trap is plugged. Clear the trap, clean the inline neutralizer, verify the drain pump. Reassemble, test again.
Inspect inducer wheel and mounting. Pull the inducer cover or whole assembly. Wheel cracked or coated with rust scale → replace the inducer. Mounting gasket leaking → reseal with high-temp RTV or replace the gasket.
Verify the switch is the problem. With the manometer still on the hose port, watch the reading hit setpoint. Put the meter on the switch terminals (continuity, COM-NO). When the draft hits setpoint, the contacts should close. If they don't, the switch is bad - replace with the OEM part.
Never bypass the pressure switch to "make it run." Jumping the switch lets the burner light without draft proof. CO incident, potential fatality, manslaughter exposure. The only legitimate use of a jumper is isolated, momentary bench testing to confirm the rest of the safety circuit downstream - and only with the gas valve disconnected.
When the customer's furnace short-cycles on the switch
Pattern: ignition tries, lockout flashes a pressure-switch-related code, retries, locks out. Often the homeowner has had a tech "tap the switch with a screwdriver handle" trick that worked for a season. The underlying condition is still there.
Most common: condensing furnace with a partially-plugged condensate drain. The drain works enough that no water leaks, but every 5-10 cycles the trap backs into the pressure tubing for a moment, switch opens, lockout. Pull the drain assembly apart, soak the trap in white vinegar 20 minutes, flush, reassemble. Bill an hour, save the customer a pricey control board they didn't need.
Common diagnostic mistakes
Replacing the switch because the code says pressure switch. The code says the switch did not close. Nine times out of ten the switch is telling the truth and something upstream is not producing draft. A new switch on a plugged condensate drain fails the same night, and now the customer has paid for a part that was never bad.
Never putting a manometer on it. Sucking on the hose, jumping the terminals, or "it feels like the inducer is running" is not a measurement. The setpoint on the plate is a number; the draft is a number. Compare them. Everything else is opinion.
Reading the manometer at the wrong point. Connect at the switch end of the tubing, not at the inducer tap. If you measure at the tap you have skipped the exact component (the tubing) that fails most often.
Ignoring tubing length and routing on a replacement. Cutting the hose short because it was easier to route, or substituting a different diameter, changes what the switch sees. Match the original length and path, and eliminate any low spot that can hold water.
Missing the second switch. Two-stage and condensing furnaces often have more than one pressure switch, and some have a blocked-vent or rollout switch in the same circuit. Confirm which one is open before chasing the wrong one.
Not checking the condensate side on a condensing furnace. This is the single most common real cause. Pull and clean the trap and drain before you order any part.
Testing with the panel door off. Many furnaces will not develop rated draft with the blower compartment open, and the door switch changes the circuit. Test with the doors on, using the sight glass and the manufacturer's service position.
Treating a make-then-open pattern as an intermittent switch. A switch that closes on cold start and opens after the blower comes on is pointing at a cracked heat exchanger or a duct pressure issue, not a bad switch. Investigate before you sell a part.
Not running enough cycles. A furnace that fires once on your test call proves very little. Watch three consecutive complete cycles, including blower off delay, before you call it fixed.
Bypassing the switch to "confirm the rest works." Do not. The one narrow legitimate use is a momentary bench check with the gas disconnected. A jumper left in place, even for a few minutes with gas available, lets the burner fire without draft proof, and that is a carbon monoxide event.
Failing to document the measured draft. Write the reading and the setpoint on the ticket. It proves the diagnosis, and the next tech on that unit gets a baseline instead of starting over.
