Ladder Safety + Load Ratings Reference
Why this matters
Falls are the leading cause of death in construction, and ladders are one of the largest single sources inside that number, alongside tens of thousands of nonfatal injuries a year. Pull the current split from the BLS census data rather than quoting a percentage from memory; the point does not depend on the decimal. The handful of safety practices + load ratings every tradesman should know are simple + life-saving. This is the field card every truck should carry.
ANSI ladder load ratings

The duty rating covers worker + tools + materials + clothing + boots, all of it. Add it up honestly: a 200-lb worker with a 50-lb belt is already AT the 250-lb Type I ceiling before boots and a jacket, so the right ladder is Type IA, not Type I. The rating is a limit, not a target.
Use Type IA OR IAA for professional / commercial work - gives margin + accommodates customer tools accidentally placed on ladder.
Ladder types
- Step ladder (self-supporting A-frame, 4 - 16 ft): interior + flat-floor work.
- Extension ladder (two-section sliding, 16 - 40 ft): leans against wall, exterior + height access.
- Multi-position (Little Giant, Werner, 13 - 26 ft): step/extension/scaffold modes.
- Articulated (extension + step + scaffold + stairs): most flexible, cost premium.
- Roof ladder (hook over ridge): steep roofs, specialized.
- Platform/podium (top step is platform): for working at one height.
- Telescoping (extension that collapses): compact storage, lower duty rating typically.
Material: aluminum vs fiberglass
Aluminum: light (32 - 50 lbs for 20' extension), conductive (NEVER for electrical), cheaper, best for plumbing/HVAC/painting. Fiberglass: heavier (40 - 60 lbs), non-conductive, REQUIRED for electrical, more expensive. Wood: rare commercial.
Ladder positioning + safety
4:1 rule for extension ladders:
- Foot of ladder out 1 ft for every 4 ft of height
- 12 ft to top of ladder → foot 3 ft out from wall
- 16 ft → 4 ft out
- 20 ft → 5 ft out
3-foot extension above eaves: extension ladder must extend 3 ft above point of support (gutter, roof edge).
Ladder feet:
- Stable on flat firm surface
- Spikes / cleats for soft ground
- Stabilizers / standoffs for siding
- Anti-skid pads
- Ground level (not on board OR brick)
Ladder angle (for extension):
- ~75° angle
- 4:1 ratio = ~75° angle
- Too vertical = falls backward
- Too horizontal = slides out
Working on ladder
3-point contact: 2 hands + 1 foot OR 2 feet + 1 hand always touching; tool belt for hands-free climbing; don't carry tools/materials in arms. Don't overreach: belt buckle within rails; move ladder rather than reaching beyond rails. Top step warning: NEVER stand on top step of step ladder (red label); top cap is for tools only; 2nd from top is highest standing. Setup: inspect, position on firm level surface, verify rated for load + proper angle, anchor/brace if extension > 12 ft, 3-point contact climbing.
Ladder inspection checklist
Before each use:
- Rails: no cracks, bends, or deformation
- Rungs: tight, not loose or damaged
- Locks (extension): function smoothly + lock fully
- Hinges (step / multi): function + lock
- Feet: present + secure
- Hardware: tight; no missing fasteners
- Labels: load rating visible
Take out of service:
- Cracked OR bent rail
- Loose rung
- Damaged spreader (step ladder)
- Faulty lock
- Missing parts
Don't paint or modify: covers defects + voids ANSI certification.
Working alone vs with helper
Helper recommended:
- Foot of ladder while climbing
- Hand tools up
- Watch for hazards (vehicles, debris falling)
- Emergency response
Required for:
- Extension ladders > 24 ft setup
- Materials being raised / lowered
- Above 20 ft height
OSHA: doesn't mandate helper for general residential but does for specific scaffolding + elevated work scenarios.
Avoid these ladder accidents
Overreach (most-common fall cause - reach within rails only, move ladder if needed). Ladder slip (foot slides out at base - wrong angle or slippery surface; spikes/stabilizers prevent). Loss of contact (slipped on rung with both hands holding tool - 3-point contact prevents). Sideways tip (wind, overreach, foot shifts on soft ground). Vehicle strikes (place ladder away from traffic). Falling tools (use lanyard or tool belt).
Ladder near electrical + transport + storage
Power lines: 10 ft minimum (residential 0 - 50 kV), 20+ ft higher voltage, FIBERGLASS ONLY, no contact even with non-conductive. Indoor: fiberglass, verify circuit off, LOTO procedures.
Vehicle transport: ratchet strap or ladder rack, no protrusion past 4 ft beyond vehicle without flag, tie front + back. Storage: flat or vertical against wall, out of weather, no weight on rails. Lifespan: aluminum 10 - 15 yr, fiberglass 15 - 25 yr; replace when stress-fractured/damaged/repeatedly dropped.
Tools to bring up ladder
Tool belt (essential):
- Hands-free climbing
- Tool retention
Bucket on hook: pull up tools/materials separately.
Magnetic tray: small parts (screws, nuts).
Rope + bucket: hoist heavier items.
Don't carry:
- Long items (lumber 6+ ft)
- Heavy boxes
- Anything blocking view
Climbing technique
Face the ladder when climbing UP + DOWN:
- Hands on rails OR rungs
- Don't carry tools in arms
- Climb slowly + deliberately
- Step on full surface of rung
Don't jump down:
- Step off last rung
- Most ankle injuries from jumping last 1 - 2 ft

Ladder alternatives
When ladders aren't appropriate, alternatives:
Scaffold: more stable but more setup time.
Cherry picker / scissor lift: rented for higher work; permits required.
Rolling scaffold: smaller scale; transportable.
Roof rigging: harnessed + anchored for steep roof work.
Hire specialist: window cleaning at heights; certified climbers.
NEVER stand on the top step of a step ladder (red warning label, "THIS IS NOT A STEP"). The top cap is for tools only. Standing on the top step shifts center of gravity above the ladder's rails - minor weight shift tips the entire ladder. Most "I just needed a little extra reach" decisions become OSHA fatality statistics. If you can't reach from the safe second-from-top step, you need a taller ladder. Buying a 12 ft step ladder vs the 8 ft you've been making work is the difference between a long career + an early one.
