When customer wants smart upgrade

There is no retrofit path. A conventional washer, oven, or refrigerator cannot be made smart by adding a module. The control board, the sensors, and the radio are one design. If the customer wants connected features on an existing appliance, the honest answer is that it means a new appliance, and that answer should come before they start shopping for a "smart kit" that does not exist.

What you can add without replacing the appliance:

  • Smart plug with energy monitoring on a plug-in appliance. Gives on/off, run detection, and rough energy use. It does not give cycle status, diagnostics, or safe remote start on anything with a heating element or a motor that should not be started unattended.
  • Leak sensors under a dishwasher, washer, or fridge, and a whole-house shutoff valve. Better value than any connected appliance feature.
  • Contact and temperature sensors in a refrigerator or freezer, which cover the actual worry (door left open, box warming up) at a fraction of the cost of a connected fridge.
  • Smart thermostat and connected water heater controls, which are genuinely retrofittable and where the payback is real.

Questions to ask before they buy connected:

  • What do you actually want it to do? Most answers are alerts, not control, and alerts are cheaper to get another way.
  • Do you have solid Wi-Fi at the appliance location? A basement laundry or a garage fridge often does not, and no app fixes a dead spot.
  • Are you comfortable with the appliance depending on the manufacturer's cloud? Features die when a server or an app is retired, and the appliance's useful life is far longer than the app's.
  • Which ecosystem is the rest of your home on? Mixing brands means multiple apps, which is where most customers give up.

Set the expectation clearly. Connected features do not make an appliance more reliable, and in practice add a control board and a radio to the list of things that can fail. Buy the appliance for the mechanical quality and the service parts availability. Treat the app as a bonus, not the reason.

If the customer decides to upgrade, tell them to have the network sorted and the account created before delivery day, and to expect setup time separate from installation. That is the step that produces the callback.
