Outdoor lighting types
Line voltage (120V):

Voltage drop (low voltage)
In low-voltage systems, voltage drops over distance:

Diagnostic process
For outdoor light issue:

- Test fixture (multimeter for voltage; continuity)

Photocell troubleshooting
Photocell on photocell-controlled light:

Solar lights
Each fixture is a self-contained system: photovoltaic panel, rechargeable cell, charge circuit, LED, and a dusk sensor. No trenching, no transformer, no permit. That is the whole appeal, and also the whole limitation, because every one of those parts is sized down to hit a low price.
What decides whether they work:
- Panel exposure. The panel needs several hours of direct sun, not ambient daylight. A path light under a tree or on the north side of the house will never charge properly no matter how new it is.
- Season. Runtime drops hard in winter: shorter days, lower sun angle, longer nights to cover. A fixture that lasts until midnight in July may quit two hours after dark in December.
- Battery age. The cell is the wear part. Most are a common rechargeable size, and runtime typically degrades noticeably within a couple of seasons.
- Panel surface. Dust, pollen, hard-water film, and snow cut charging badly. A wipe-down twice a year is real maintenance, not busywork.
Troubleshooting, in order:
- Confirm the pull-tab or shipping insulator is removed and the on/off switch is on. This is the most common "dead out of the box" call.
- Cover the sensor with your hand or a cloth in daylight. If it lights, the fixture works and the problem is charging or placement.
- Clean the panel and check for a shading source that appears only at certain hours.
- Open the battery compartment. Look for corrosion at the contacts, and swap in a known-good cell of the same chemistry and size.
- If it still fails, replace the fixture. There are no service parts and the labor to diagnose further exceeds the fixture cost.
Set the expectation before you sell them. Solar is the right answer for accents, markers, and locations where running wire is impractical or destructive. It is the wrong answer for security lighting, for anything that must be on reliably at a set time, and for anywhere in deep shade. A customer who wants dependable output at a known brightness should be on low voltage with a transformer and a timer, and telling them that up front prevents the callback where nothing is technically broken.
