Refrigerant Transition - R-410A to A2L Reference
Why this reference exists
The U.S. residential refrigerant transition from R-410A to A2L refrigerants (R-454B + R-32) became effective January 1, 2025. New residential HVAC equipment manufactured after that date ships with A2L refrigerant. Crews installing + servicing equipment manufactured 2025+ work with a flammable refrigerant - a fundamentally different safety profile than R-410A. This reference is the working summary for 2025-2026.
What changed
Before (R-410A era, 2010-2024):
- R-410A: non-flammable (A1 classification)
- GWP (Global Warming Potential): 2,088
- Industry-wide, dominant residential
- Manufactured + sold without flammability concerns
Now (A2L era, 2025+):
- R-454B (Honeywell + Carrier): A2L (mildly flammable)
- R-32 (Daikin + many others): A2L (mildly flammable)
- GWP 466 (R-454B) and 675 (R-32)
- 68% lower climate impact than R-410A for R-32, about 78% lower for R-454B
The EPA's AIM Act + American Innovation + Manufacturing rule mandate this transition. Older R-410A equipment continues to operate; service refrigerant remains available for the installed base.

A2L is "mildly flammable" - narrow flammable range, slow flame spread, requires ignition source close to the leak. Significantly safer than A2/A3 propane refrigerants used in commercial.

Working with A2L:
- Ignition sources matter (open flames, electrical arcs in work area)
- Sparkless tools where required (some manufacturer specs)
- Ventilation during work
- Leak detection more critical (R-32 + R-454B have less odor than older refrigerants; A2L leak detector required)
- Larger system charges have minimum room volume requirements (ASHRAE 15)
Equipment-side:
- A2L-rated tools, valves, fittings, recovery machines
- Refrigerant cylinders color-coded differently
- Charging weight + procedures specific to A2L
- Mineral oil compatibility (R-32 + R-454B use POE oil; R-410A also POE - compatible mostly)
EPA 608 certification
Every tech servicing stationary HVAC needs EPA 608 certification. Categories:
- Type I: small appliances under 5 lbs
- Type II: high-pressure systems (most residential split AC + heat pump)
- Type III: low-pressure systems
- Universal: all of the above
EPA 608 testing was updated 2017-2019 to cover A2L refrigerants conceptually. Many techs holding pre-2019 certifications need a refresher to fully understand A2L procedures. Several manufacturers + AHRI offer A2L-specific training courses (typically 4-8 hours).
Tooling required
Tools rated for A2L (some compatible with R-410A; some new):
Manifold + gauges: A2L-rated manifold (typically marked + colored). Some R-410A manifolds work; verify rating.
Recovery machine: A2L-rated recovery machine (sparkless motor). Older R-410A units may not be safe for A2L per manufacturer.
Leak detector: A2L-specific electronic leak detector. R-410A detectors may not detect R-32 + R-454B at safe minimum.
Vacuum pump: standard rotary-vane works; verify rated for A2L.
Recovery cylinder: A2L-rated DOT-cylinders, distinctly marked, NOT reusable for R-410A.
Charging cylinder: A2L-rated.
Brazing equipment: standard works; ventilation + ignition-source awareness during brazing.
Budget the full kit per tech, not per shop: manifold, recovery machine, leak detector, cylinders, and training. Existing R-410A tools may carry over with manufacturer approval; get that in writing rather than assuming it.
Service procedures
Recovery from A2L system:
- Verify system access + atmospheric conditions (well-ventilated work area)
- Connect A2L-rated recovery machine to liquid + vapor ports
- Recover to manufacturer-rated cylinder
- Verify weight + DOT label
- Disconnect; manage cylinder per A2L protocol (not stored in vehicle hot box; cylinder cool)
Charging A2L system:
- Evacuate to 500 microns (or per manufacturer)
- Hold vacuum to verify no leaks
- Charge by weight per manufacturer label
- NEVER charge into a positive-pressure system already containing different refrigerant
- Verify subcooling/superheat per manufacturer
- Leak-check after charging (A2L electronic detector + soap bubbles backup)
Leak detection:
- A2L electronic detector preferred (most R-410A detectors lack A2L sensitivity)
- UV dye + light still effective
- Soap bubbles still effective for obvious leaks
- Note: R-32 and R-454B are odorless, so nothing warns you before the concentration climbs. The detector has to alarm well below the lower flammability limit, which is exactly what an A2L-rated instrument is set up to do and an R-410A one is not
Code + jurisdictional adoption
UL 60335-2-40 (3rd edition) governs A2L equipment safety. Adopted into model codes:
- IRC 2024 (some states)
- IMC 2024
- IECC 2024
Some jurisdictions slower to adopt; verify locally. Most equipment manufacturers are shipping A2L on 2025 model year regardless of local adoption.
Minimum room volume
A2L refrigerants have charge-amount limits relative to room volume. ASHRAE 15 + UL 60335-2-40 specify minimum cubic feet per pound of refrigerant.
For typical residential R-32 systems: room volume per pound of charge >> typical residential room. Most installations within limits.
For larger commercial systems: leak detection + ventilation systems required when charge exceeds practical thresholds.
Existing R-410A equipment
Customers with R-410A equipment:
- Continue to operate normally
- Service refrigerant remains available (R-410A production capped but stockpiled; reclaim refrigerant grows)
- No mandate to replace R-410A equipment
- Expect R-410A service refrigerant costs to rise over 2025-2030 as supply tightens
Most R-410A residential equipment will operate normally through 2030+ with available service refrigerant. The transition affects NEW equipment + first principles of service practice.
Customer talking points
When quoting 2025+ new installs:
- "This system uses R-32 / R-454B refrigerant - the new EPA-approved standard, 68% lower climate impact than R-410A on R-32 and about 78% lower on R-454B."
- "It's mildly flammable, like propane in your gas grill. Modern equipment safely contains it."
- "Our techs are certified for A2L. We use leak detectors specifically designed for this refrigerant."
- "No change to your home use; just an industry-wide upgrade."
When servicing R-410A:
- "Your system uses R-410A - we'll keep it running. Service refrigerant is available."
- "When it's time to replace, the new systems will use R-32 / R-454B."
Common pitfalls
Bringing a torch to an A2L job without clearing the area first. Brazing near a system that has not been fully recovered and purged is the one failure mode that hurts someone. Recover, flow nitrogen, move the ignition source, ventilate. Treat it like gas work, because that is closer to what it is.
Using the R-410A leak detector you already own. Most heated-diode and corona-discharge detectors sold before the transition are not rated for R-32 or R-454B and will either miss the leak or, worse, be an ignition source themselves. Buy the A2L-rated detector. Soap bubbles remain a valid backup, not a substitute.
Assuming the recovery machine is fine because it worked on R-410A. A2L recovery requires an A2L-rated machine (sealed or purged motor, appropriate internal protection) and a cylinder rated for the refrigerant. Recovering A2L into a standard recovery cylinder that already contains R-410A residue also cross-contaminates a cylinder you then cannot get reclaimed cleanly.
Topping off an A2L system with R-410A because that is what is on the truck. They are not interchangeable, pressures and oil behavior differ, and you have contaminated a system that now needs full recovery and a dryer. It also puts a flammable blend in a container and a system nobody expects it in.
Ignoring the equipment's own safety hardware. A2L air handlers ship with integrated refrigerant detection and, in many cases, a mitigation routine that runs the blower on a leak signal. Disabling it, failing to reconnect the sensor harness after a coil swap, or bypassing a fault to get the unit running defeats the entire safety case for A2L in a dwelling.
Storing cylinders in a hot, sealed van. A2L cylinders belong secured, upright, and in a ventilated compartment, not baking in the back with the doors shut all weekend.
Working outside your certification and your employer's training record. EPA 608 still applies, and the manufacturer warranty plus your insurer will ask whether the tech had documented A2L training. Get it on paper.
Telling the customer it is "just like the old stuff." It is not, and a homeowner who later reads about flammability will feel misled. The honest framing already in this reference works better.
