Sewer Camera Inspection Reference

Why this matters

A camera turns "your sewer might have a problem" into a documented diagnosis the customer can see for themselves. It also reveals problems no other tool can: root intrusion location, pipe material transitions, bellies, broken sections, foreign objects. The plumber who runs camera competently sells the right repair and avoids dig-and-pray scenarios. This is the field card.

When to run camera

  • Recurring backups (snake works for a few months, then problem returns)
  • Slow drains across the whole house (suggests main line, not branch)
  • Pre-purchase home inspection (buyer wants confirmation main is sound)
  • After a snake job that hit hard resistance (verify what was cleared)
  • Before any sewer work to confirm scope
  • After a major event (root invasion, ground movement, age concerns)
  • Mature trees on the property + clay-pipe-era home (root risk)

Don't run camera as the first response to a single backup - snake first; camera if it recurs.

Equipment

Push-rod camera: flexible rod with camera head; pushed through cleanout. 100 - 200 ft typical residential reach. Self-leveling head (image stays upright as camera rotates) is worth the upgrade.

Crawler camera (motorized): for larger pipes 6"+; commercial. Drives itself.

Locator: sonde in the camera head emits signal; surface receiver locates the camera's position above ground. Critical for marking where excavation should happen.

Monitor + recorder: video recording for customer; pause + screenshot.

Common brands: RIDGID SeeSnake, General Pipe Cleaners Gen-Eye, Spartan Sewer Cam.

Access points

  • Outside cleanout (preferred - usually 4" near foundation)
  • Inside cleanout (basement floor or laundry room)
  • Pulled toilet (last resort for camera; need clean approach)
  • Roof vent (rarely - long distance, hard to manage rod)

Through a fixture trap won't reach the main; you need real access.

Pre-run prep

Before pushing camera:

  • Snake the line first if heavy debris is present; camera in muddy water shows nothing
  • Run a low flow of water at a sink to keep the lens rinsed during the run
  • Pre-feed a few feet of rod to verify camera works above ground (battery, image, light)
  • Locate the access cleanout outside if going from inside, to estimate run length

Running the camera

Push the rod gradually - don't force. Watch for:

  • Pipe material transitions (different texture, different reflectivity)
  • Joints (recurring patterns)
  • Fittings (wyes, elbows where branches join)
  • Standing water (suggests belly OR partial blockage downstream)
  • Roots intruding through joints
  • Cracks, fractures, offset joints
  • Foreign objects (toys, wipes, "flushable" wipes)
  • Pipe color and condition

Talk to the customer as you run if they're present - they'll remember what they saw.

Sonde locating

When you find something to repair, use the sonde to mark its location above ground:

  • Stop camera at the issue
  • Activate sonde
  • Sweep receiver over the ground above where camera is
  • Mark with paint or stake
  • Verify by moving camera 5 ft + re-locating

The depth reading is usually approximate - count rod feet as the more reliable distance measurement and combine with the location.

Reading what you see

Roots through joint: the most common older-home finding. Clay-tile or cast-iron joints; roots find seams; intrude during dry weather seeking moisture. Solutions range from cabling (mechanical removal, returns within months) to root-kill chemical (Roebic) to spot repair to liner.

Belly (low spot holding water): settled pipe section. Water stands; debris accumulates. Snake clears symptomatically but the belly remains. Repair = re-grade the pipe (excavation).

Broken / offset pipe: pipe sections shifted or broken. Excavation OR spot repair (cured-in-place liner over the break).

Crushed pipe: heavy machinery overhead or settling. Full section replacement.

Bellied + roots together: common in clay lines 50+ yr old; full re-line OR replacement.

Orangeburg pipe: tar-impregnated wood fiber (used 1940s - 1970s). Distinctive layered appearance; deteriorates with age + collapses. Replacement, not repair.

Cast iron with channeling: bottom of pipe rotted away from waste contact; top intact. Liner can save these.

Foreign object: child's toy, dropped tool, root mass that snake couldn't clear. Retrieval tools or hydrojet.

Customer documentation

Always record the run and provide to the customer:

  • Date + time + tech name
  • Access point used
  • Distance to each notable finding
  • Sonde-located surface positions marked on a sketch
  • Recommended repair (with reasoning)
  • Recording of the actual video footage

A customer with the recording can get second opinions, file insurance claims, and trust your diagnosis. Hidden problems become visible problems.

Repair options revealed by camera

Mechanical snake (cable): clears blockage; doesn't repair pipe. Roots regrow.

Hydrojetting: high-pressure water; cleans grease + soft buildup; doesn't fix structural.

Spot repair (cured-in-place liner patch): trenchless; fixes single break.

Full liner (CIPP - cured-in-place pipe): re-lines entire run; new structural pipe inside old. Trenchless.

Pipe bursting: pulls new HDPE through old; old pipe shattered outward. Trenchless when access allows.

Open trench replacement: dig + replace. Highest disruption, sometimes only option.

Common camera mistakes

  • Running camera through dirty/muddy water - see nothing
  • Forcing rod against obstruction - damages camera head
  • Skipping sonde locate - find a problem but can't tell customer where
  • Not recording video - customer's word against yours later
  • Misreading roots vs grease (similar appearance to inexperienced)
  • Pushing too far + losing track of distance markers

Camera maintenance

  • Rinse rod after every job (sewer water + grease damages PVC)
  • Inspect camera head for cracks before each use
  • Charge batteries fully between jobs
  • Calibrate sonde annually
  • Don't kink or coil rod tightly (breaks fiber-optic + wiring inside)

Sewer line replacement quotes

After camera, you can quote accurately:

  • Distance affected (rod feet recorded)
  • Depth at the repair (sonde reading + visual confirmation)
  • Surface conditions over the line (driveway, landscaping, structure)
  • Available trenchless options (some require access pits both ends)
  • Permit + inspection requirements (local AHJ)

A camera + thoughtful estimate beats a guess every time. Customer + inspector trust your work.

When to refer

Some of what the camera shows is not your job to fix, and the fastest way to lose a customer is to take on work you cannot finish.

Refer or bring in another party when:

  • The defect is on the public side of the property line or in the municipal main. Standing water and debris in a main you can see past the tap, or a collapse beyond the property line, belongs to the utility. Document the footage and the distance, call it in, and let the customer know who owns it. Do not excavate toward a public main on your own.
  • Excavation crosses a public right-of-way, a sidewalk, or a street. That is a permitted, bonded, traffic-controlled job. If you are not set up for it, sub it or hand it off.
  • The line runs under a structure, a slab, a retaining wall, or a mature specimen tree the customer cares about. Tunneling and under-slab work is a different skill set and a different insurance conversation.
  • You find asbestos-cement (transite) pipe. Cutting it is a regulated activity in most jurisdictions. Stop and bring in the appropriate abatement or a contractor licensed for it.
  • The line is shared between properties. Common in older duplexes, townhomes, and alley-served neighborhoods. Now there are two owners, and possibly an easement. Everything stops until the ownership question is answered, usually by a title or plat review.
  • You cannot get the camera past the problem and cannot locate it. A blind spot is not a diagnosis. Bring in someone with a crawler camera, a better locator, or the ability to open a second access point rather than quoting an excavation on a guess.
  • The picture points at something outside plumbing. Repeated offset joints and a belly that keeps coming back can be settlement or a failing foundation. That is a structural or geotechnical question, and repiping the sewer will not fix it.
  • Depth exceeds what you can safely trench. Trench work at depth requires shoring or benching per OSHA excavation rules. If you are not equipped and trained for protective systems, refer it. Nobody dies on a sewer job that got handed off.

In every case, give the customer the video, the footage marks, and the sonde location. That package makes the next contractor faster and makes you the person who found it.
