Smoke and CO Detector Install Reference
Why this matters
Smoke and CO detector placement isn't a guideline - it's life-safety code, enforced by NFPA 72 (national) and IRC R314/R315 (residential). Placement mistakes - bathroom-adjacent smoke alarms that nuisance-trip until the homeowner pulls the battery, CO alarms in unconditioned attics that never report what they're supposed to detect - actively make houses less safe than no alarm at all. The placement rules look fiddly until you understand the airflow logic behind each one.
Smoke detector placement - what the code requires
Per NFPA 72 (current 2022 edition) and IRC R314 (current 2021 cycle), a dwelling requires smoke alarms in every of these locations:
- Inside every sleeping room (one alarm per bedroom)
- Outside every sleeping area, in the immediate vicinity (hallway serving bedrooms)
- On every level of the dwelling, including basement (unfinished attic typically excluded)
Position within the room:
- Ceiling-mounted (preferred): at least 4" from any wall
- Wall-mounted (if ceiling not practical): between 4" and 12" below the ceiling
- Never in the dead-air corner where wall meets ceiling - smoke doesn't reach there for ~30 minutes
- In a stairwell: at the top of the stairs, NOT the bottom (smoke rises)
- In a vaulted/peaked ceiling: at the apex (or within 36" of it), at least 4" down from the peak
Stay-away zones (placement that causes nuisance trips):
- At least 3 ft from a bathroom door (steam triggers photoelectric sensors)
- At least 3 ft from any HVAC supply register (forced airflow draws smoke past the sensor before it triggers)
- At least 10 ft from cooking appliances (longer is better; in small apartments where 10 ft isn't possible, use a photoelectric-only model, never ionization)
- At least 3 ft from a ceiling fan in operation
- Not in the path of garage exhaust (CO and smoke from cold-start cars)
CO detector placement - what the code requires
Per NFPA 72 (which absorbed the CO requirements when NFPA 720 was withdrawn in 2020) and IRC R315:
- Outside each sleeping area, in the immediate vicinity
- On every level of the dwelling (including basements; not attached garages or attics)
- Within 5-20 ft horizontal of any fuel-burning appliance (furnace, boiler, water heater, gas range, fireplace)
- Not directly above a fuel-burning appliance (heat rises and pushes CO laterally to the sensor)
- 15 ft from cooking appliances to avoid nuisance trips from natural combustion byproducts at the stove
- Not in unconditioned spaces - CO detectors are spec'd for normal interior climate; attics and garages exceed their rated range
- In attached-garage cases, place one CO detector inside the dwelling near the door from the garage. Do not place inside the garage itself.
Mounting height: CO has roughly the same density as air, so it diffuses throughout a room. Manufacturers usually allow any wall height from outlet to ceiling. Ceiling mount is fine. Plug-in models at outlet height are fine. Avoid behind furniture or drapes that block diffusion.
Detector types and when to use each
- Photoelectric: detects smoldering fires (paper, fabric, slow-burn) - typical residential fire. Slower on flame-on fires but the modern recommendation.
- Ionization: detects fast-flame fires (grease fire, paper torch). Slower on smoldering fires. Banned or being phased out as single-mode units in several states because most residential fires smolder first.
- Dual-sensor (photo + ionization in one unit): best coverage; First Alert SA320CN and Kidde i9080 are common.
- Combo smoke + CO: First Alert SC9120B (hardwired with battery backup), Kidde KN-COSM-IBA. One device per location instead of two. Same placement rules as the more-restrictive component.
- 10-year sealed-battery alarms: First Alert P3010ACU, Kidde 21010163. Lithium battery not removable; whole unit replaces at 10 years. Common requirement in CA, NY, and several other states for battery-only retrofits.
Hardwire vs battery-only
Per IRC R314.4 (new construction or major remodel that opens walls):
- Hardwired with battery backup required
- Interconnected - one trips, all trip - required
- Three-wire cable (black hot, white neutral, red interconnect) between every alarm
Per IRC R314.4 exception (existing dwelling, alarm replacement only, no wall removal):
- Battery-only alarms allowed
- Interconnection waived
Two practical truths:
- Mixed-brand interconnect doesn't work. A First Alert alarm's interconnect signal is not compatible with a Kidde's. When replacing one alarm in a hardwired interconnected set, replace ALL alarms with the same brand.
- 10-year sealed batteries are the right answer for the battery-only case. Replacing nine-volt batteries annually has 50-70% real-world compliance; the 10-year alarm just works.
Hardwire install procedure
Tools: voltage tester, multimeter, screwdriver set, wire stripper, twist-on or push-in wire nuts, anchors and drywall screws.
- Kill power at the breaker. Smoke alarms usually share the lighting circuit for that floor. Verify dead with a non-contact tester AND a contact meter to ground.
- Locate the existing junction box (or for new install, cut in a remodel box at code-compliant location - see placement above).
- Pull the cable. New construction: 14/3 NM-B (or 14/3 MC in commercial). Carry black, white, red, ground.
- Mount the alarm's backplate to the box. Match the alarm manufacturer's mounting screws (some use a quarter-turn mount, some a screw-on plate).
- Connect the wires:
- Black → hot
- White → neutral
- Red → interconnect (loop through to next alarm)
- Ground → ground screw
- Insert the battery (even 10-year sealed alarms ship "battery activated" by a pull-tab on first install - pull the tab).
- Snap the alarm onto the backplate (or twist-lock per manufacturer).
- Restore power. Verify each alarm illuminates its power LED.
- Test the interconnect. Press the TEST button on ONE alarm and confirm every other alarm in the set also sounds within ~5 seconds. If they don't, the red interconnect is broken somewhere.
Service calls - common diagnoses
"It chirps every minute or so." Low battery, almost always. In a hardwired alarm with battery backup the chirp continues on line power, which confuses customers. Replace the backup battery in every alarm on the interconnect at once, not just the one chirping, and note the date on the alarm with a marker. If the chirp continues with a fresh battery, the unit has hit end of life.
"It chirps and a new battery didn't fix it." Check the manufacture date stamped on the back. Smoke alarms are replaced at ten years from manufacture, CO alarms typically sooner per the maker. An end-of-life chirp is by design and no amount of cleaning or battery swapping stops it. Replace the unit.
"They all go off in the middle of the night for no reason." Two usual causes. Dust and insects inside the chamber, which vacuuming from the outside and a shot of compressed air often fixes. Or a temperature drop overnight sinking a marginal battery below threshold. If it recurs on the same unit, that unit is done.
"It goes off every time we shower or cook." Placement. Measure the distance to the bathroom door and to the range. If it is inside the stay-away zone, relocate it to a compliant position, or where the layout will not allow that, swap to a photoelectric-only model. Never solve this by removing the alarm.
"One alarm sounds but the others don't." Broken interconnect. Test by pressing the button on one alarm and confirming the others respond. Check that the red interconnect conductor is landed at every device, and remember that mixing brands or mixing wired and wireless interconnect on one string frequently does not work.
"All alarms sound and nothing is burning." On a combo unit this may be a real CO event. Do not silence and leave. Get people out, ventilate, and meter the space before you assume it is a false alarm. If CO is present, shut down the suspect appliance and treat it as a combustion call.
"The homeowner pulled the battery." Common and dangerous. Fix the underlying nuisance cause, replace the alarm if it is old, and explain why a disabled alarm is worse than none. Document the date and location of every alarm you serviced or replaced on the invoice.
